Substitute Teacher Interview - Tricky Questions and Answers
Working as a substitute teacher can help you get the much-needed experience that will land you a job as a regular teacher. While you might think that becoming a substitute teacher is easy, it actually takes hard work. Are you ready to face the interview for a substitute teacher? Let’s help you out by offering answers to some of the tricky questions.
As a substitute teacher, what are your biggest strengths?
I have adaptability as my major strength. Apart from that, I also possess compassion and problem-solving abilities. All these skills will help me handle my responsibilities in this job.
Different students have different learning abilities. How do you cater to their needs?
The three main learning styles are visual, auditory, and kinesthetic. I use all three strategies in my lesson plans so that all types of students benefit equally from my classes.
Do you think the job of a substitute teacher is easier than that of a regular teacher or harder? And why?
I believe that substitute teachers have more responsibilities than regular teachers because substitutes don’t have enough time to get to know each student and connect with them. Also, because substitutes are generally rotated in different classes, they have to handle different responsibilities and types of students.
How would you handle a negative response from a student?
I like to take a proactive approach by engaging students in the lesson, by making the lesson interesting and helping students make good choices in class. If I do get a negative response from a student, I would follow the regular teacher’s discipline plan.
What do you like the most about substitute teaching?
I like the challenges involved in substitute teaching. It includes teaching different classes and involved a lot of diversity. It inspires me as I look forward to a new challenge each day. At the end of the day, I learn something new and upgrade myself.

Could you please explain the challenges of substitute teaching?

The biggest challenge a substitute teacher has is not knowing the students. The challenge is to get to know the students, develop a rapport with them and deliver the lessons as best as possible.

Hello Valerie. You are so right. One thing you may want to do is introduce these simple rules to follow in the classroom: 1. Be in assigned seat and ready to work. 2. Bring all equipment and assignments. 3. Keep hands, feet, books and objects to yourself. 4. Use appropriate language. 5. Follow teacher’s instructions. 6. No food or gum in the classroom. One of my substitute teachers was a colleague from my school who recently retired. His approach was simple--he brought in a big bag of mints and rewarded students all day. Another substitute teacher that I remember from 1968 promised to show us his slide pictures from South Africa once we were finished our work for the day. I still remember that after all these years!
Tomorrow I have my first interview for substitute. Please guide me because I'm not a confident .

@Aaron Kane Questions that You Should Ask during an Interview Just like you will be fielding questions from your interviewer, it is best to ask a few questions of your own. It shows that while you are genuinely interested in working at their school, you do have some concerns of your own. This helps give you a more confident appearance. It lets your interviewers know that not just any job will do for you, but that you want the right job, the best job. In other words, you are looking for the teaching position that is the best fit for you. Keep your questions simple and polite. Make sure that you are asking specific questions about the position and/or work environment. Steer clear of asking any personal questions or any questions that are not directly job related. You may even want to jot down some of the answers that you are given for reference later on. Here are some questions that you should ask your prospective employer: 1. Why is the position available right now? 2. What would you most like to see done in the next six months? 3. What are the most difficult problems this job entails? 4. How much freedom do I have in the curriculum decision-making process? 5. What changes do you envision in the near future for this school? 6. How many periods do I teach per day? Planning periods? 7. Do I have my own classroom? 8. What extracurricular activities can I get involved with? 9. How is your technology department? Do I have access to Internet/computer? 10. What is the school’s philosophy on inclusion? 11. What is the typical class size? 12. Do you have a new teacher mentor program? Obviously you do not have to ask all of these questions. Instead, pick three to six that you are truly curious about. If you have done research you may know part of the answer. For example: I am aware that your school has a teacher mentor program. Could you explain how this works and how I might become involved in this program.
