Stand Out in Your Teacher Interview | Kathleen Jasper

In this video, I walk you through some basic tips for your teacher interview. I have interviewed so many teachers over the years, so I share what I think is the best approach while also outlining things to avoid.
Check out my new teacher interview course here: kathleenjasper.com/products/t...
Interview elements covered in this video:
- How to be positive and frame the interview as an opportunity to share your strengths and talents.
- How to successfully answer the scenario question you’ll probably be asked.
- How to apply all the good words you’ve learned in our videos and courses to your interview.
- How to avoid anything negative and turn it into a positive.
You’re going to crush your interview, and even if you don’t get the job, you’ll learn a lot. So relax and turn this into an opportunity to learn and grow.

I watched this video before my teaching interview in October and got the job. I was interviewed by 5 people all at once! It was intimidating, but they literally asked these same questions you mentioned and even though I had never taught before I was able to answer them. So good. Thank God and thank you!

When you have a catastrophic loss in your life often your employer gently gets rid of you, after 5 years I was no longer a good fit. I watched your inspiring videos prepared and got a dream job teaching college level high school to at-risk students. It is everything I wanted for years. You gave me the knowledge and confidence to shine. I have never done so well in an interview. Ms. Jasper you have helped safeguard the future of my family thank you.

That was so eye-opening! I have been a teacher for 17 years plus, and have worked as a Principal as well. I too have had the privilege to be part of the interviewer...however, in the recent interview that sat, in a completely new environment, I thought I gave the best shot. Coz there wasn't anything that I couldn't talk about. But then later I received an email to tell me that they were proceeding further with the other candidate. I kept wondering where would I have gone wrong? You answered it. Damn, probably I knew too much more than I should have! I did mention a few weaknesses of other schools in the locality, which could have given the impression of a gossip-natured!

  • @KathleenJasperEdD

Thank you for sharing your experience. It's commendable that you have extensive experience in education, both as a teacher and a Principal. It's possible that, in your enthusiasm to showcase your knowledge, mentioning weaknesses of other schools may have been perceived differently than intended. Sometimes, interviews prioritize a positive and collaborative approach. Your self-awareness is key, and perhaps refining your focus on your own strengths and the positive aspects of your experiences could enhance future interviews. Best of luck in your continued endeavors! 🌟 ~Yiana Team Member at Kathleen Jasper LLC

Thanks. I thought I did great in my interview but I found out today that my interview for my district 's special ed teacher pool didn't go well and they decided not to extend a letter of intent for me. I've been a paraeducator in special ed for 10 years and am now finishing a 2 year program for a bachelor's in Gen ed/special ed. I am going to have a meeting with one of the interviewers Wed to get some tips on interview answers based on the feedback from my interview. I'm beyond disappointed because I don't know what I did wrong. I'm 56 years old so I worry I was too easygoing in my answers or too old school even though I've taken my new learning I college to heart.

I wonder if I said something negative about a teacher I used to work with in my interview. I honestly don't remember what I said in my interview. I'm trying not to feel discouraged...I'm 2 months from graduating from my program but I'm having feelings like maybe I should call it quits if I can't pass an interview for a special ed teacher pool...but I won't give up. I have too much invested in this. I know I'm a good teacher for special needs kids. I have so much compassion for them and I spend so much time and energy to help them succeed...it makes me angry that I didn't pass the interview.

It can be very discouraging. Have you considered asking for feedback on your interview? Perhaps ask if there is a way to see your scores and how you did so you can get better. Also, maybe there is a rubric they use for the interview. If you can get that, you can work on your approach.

  • @KathleenJasperEdD

    @KathleenJasperEdD

    Жыл бұрын

This is a question most principals or interview teams ask. You will probably want to highlight maybe a disagreement or difference in approaches. Then you can say that you compromised or that you tried both ways and collected anecdotal data to see which one worked best. You could also just say, "I could tell this was very important to my colleague, and rather than push back, I compromised." Or maybe your colleague was unreasonable, but you learned how to work with them and focus on their strengths, rather than focusing on what irked you about them. Keep it positive, but you can be firm in your beliefs. This is key to getting along with people in the workplace. Hope that helps and have a great day.

Having stated that the principal at my last job let me go with a not so nice statement. And I know you said be positive and I agree with what you said, I myself personally believe in being positive, however, by not stating the some facts of the situation, I feel as though I am accepting misplaced blame for the situation. How should I tackle this situation with a future employer? If you are able to get a sub position then do so. I thought you had to have a bachelor's to get hired as a sub, but if you can do it by all means get the experience. Otherwise, you can get hired as a paraprofessional at a local school. The more contacts you make in a school/district, the easier it will be to get hired. Thanks for watching.
