Subsisting In Fort Bragg

Often when I vlog, it is a part of my day. Today I will give you a glimpse of my full day living out of my ProMaster City minivan. From getting up in the morning to finding a place to park at night.
I’m in a very nice area of Northern California. Fort Bragg is in Mendocino County, right on the pacific coast. And today we are checking out Point Cabrillo Lighthouse Station, just a few miles south of town.

My name is Scott and in 2015, I bought a Ram ProMaster City to live in. Even though I didn’t know much about RV’s and campervans, I set about building the van out as a minivan camper. And in April of 2016, I moved into my minivan full time.
Over the years, I’ve learned you don’t need to have a big skill set to build your own campervan. And that living as a minimalist and utilizing solar power can be a less expensive way to live. I’ve also learned that a minivan can be a very comfortable home.
Please follow along as I document my journey.

Fun fact - just over a year ago during one of last winter’s big storms, multiple massive waves rose up and broke over the cliff, smashed through the double doors on the west side of the lighthouse building, and flooded the gift shop and museum on the ground floor of the lighthouse. The ocean doesn’t mess around, that’s for sure. The lighthouse has an amazing group of volunteers and with the help of State Parks was repaired and reopened in a little over three weeks.

Wow, you took me back big time. I grew up in Fort Bragg and Mendocino. Also lived in Caspar. Went to school in both Fort Bragg and Mendocino. That was the 60's and I'm 64 now. Those were the hippy days. Lol. So many memories and still have a few old friends there. Looks a bit different, lol. Forgot to mention I lived in Humboldt from 89-2005 and moved to Hawaii. Love Humboldt, too.

The town was different then. My Grandpa built a house on Park View Drive in 1974, north of town across from MacKerricher. We are from the bay area, but we still own the house up there. I was conceived in Fort Bragg and my parents lived there from '81-'83. Nobody would trust you if they didn't know you back then, very trendy now. I miss going up there when I was growing up, late 80s and early 90s. Pudding creek was my jam!

Hi Scott, I've lived in Mendocino and Little River for 30+ years now and just found your channel. This one caught my eye being in my neck of the woods. Yes, we do have great kind and friendly folks here. Your comment about the friendliness of people seeming somewhat reflected by weather a place needs or is overrun by tourists makes sense. I had lived in the Mendocino Village and when we were overrun by tourists for an extended time it could get wearing on the nerves. That's another story...lol. I've toyed with the idea of Van life for the past 2-3 years so this kind of video is great. So many of the videos I have seen are young folks so it's interesting getting a view from someone with more maturity. The biggest obstacle for me is that I don't like driving too much. I love exploring new places and meeting new people but enjoy being driven... probably why this remains more fantasy than reality, lol. All the housekeeping details are so helpful for the idea of trying van life myself. I found it interesting to hear that garbage receptacles are hard to find nesr the beaches here...had never noticed this. I'm not sure if this is an issue at the beaches but all up and down our coastal area we've had an increase in our bear population and no garbage can is safe from them. (What's our wildlife to do as we humans continue to invade their natural feeding places). Also it makes perfect sense about not going extra miles for something like "free" water, especially with our insane gas prices. I wouldn't have thought how helpful all the little daily details like water, garbage, kinds of shoes, paper towels versus dishcloths, etc. can be. I don't recall any other van lifer I've watched talking about daily Van housekeeping so thank you. I totally relate to not being a morning person and have read articles by neuroscientists who claim our bodies have 3-4 different circadian rhythms and have natural set points. I know I've tried to change my rhythm so many times and have finally given in to being a night owl and not a morning early bird. Speaking of local coffee we have Thanksgiving coffee which is based in Fort Bragg and Big River which relocated to Santa Rosa awhile back. I'm a lover of a strong dark roast and the Big River Mediterranean French Roast is my absolute favorite now. They carry it at both Harvest Markets. You've mentioned coming back here and guessing you might know this but you can get showers for a small fee at Russian Gulch State Park and some beautiful hiking to a pretty waterfall. Thank you for these and looking forward to your trips in Humboldt. Very interesting hearing how food prices are actually cheaper in Humboldt I was born in Arcata and sometimes think about moving back to Arcata or Ferndale, so this is interesting news. A tip for a lid not closing correctly...you can usually use aluminum foil to creare a molded lid and then often the regular lid clamps onto it. And to heck with anyone judging using pre made rice, you do you as long as your not harming anyone. Blessings ❤

Caffeine might well be making you less of a morning person. It's a socially accepted drug so we don't often talk about it as a drug. Caffeine is a stimulant which makes us feel alert and energetic, but on the flip-side, there's also the less talked about rebound fatigue. I used to be a big coffee person too. I'd be desperate for my morning cup to be able to start my day, but now that I don't drink it anymore(due to other health reasons), I must say it is very nice being able to wake up and feel awake rather than needing my fix to get there. You have a higher tolerance for caffeine, as I remember you mentioning you can drink coffee relatively late in the day and still sleep at night, but even though you're able to fall asleep, neuroscientists recommend that we avoid caffeine from 10ish hours before sleeping in order to preserve the quality of our sleep.

I just found you & I’m enthralled with your calming voice & love of good coffee! I mostly drink Gevalia, but I haven’t ground beans in a very long time. I’m interested in the grinder you have, so I’m going to check your Amazon list. I’m a wannabe vanlife at age 70, and I’m hoping to get my vehicle very soon. Happy trails!

Hi Scott. Suggestion for remembering if you have or haven't taken vits/meds. They make a mini version of the clear plastic weekly Sunday through Saturday pill despenser box. Holds just 3 pills per day. Attach box to magnets, mount out of way, easy to see. Easy to see if you have already taken them and don't have the bottle(s) taking up valuable real estate. Enjoy your videos. Mike

Hello Scott, Your narratives are my traveling companions when I commute to work. Love your stories and down to earth perspective. I hope you will be good to yourself. Allow your self tender and generous self care. You are learned of van dwelling and how to male it work. But your alone so much. Outside of your fan base you don't seem to have much contact on an other than virtual basis. I hope you will think about getting some time with others. It could just be a meet up with another van dweller or someone interesting that has stories to share as well. Your hobby is coffee and cooking. I take a class occasionally. Its a nice way to interface with others. Classes as the libraries are generally free. Mabey you would like to check it out. Nice haircut! Interesting view of the world through your lens. Live your best life .

It’s a common misconception to think that I am alone often. The fact is, most of the people I hang out with don’t want to be on video. I also try and not video strangers around me. Which is why a lot of places I go appear to be void of people.
