Why Do I Ever Leave The Coast? | #adayinalife of #vanlife in Mendocino

#vanlife #adayinalife #mendocino
After having some battery troubles, I traveled across the width of California to escape triple digit temperatures. My original destination was For Bragg on the Northern California coast. But somehow I ended up in the town of Medocino.

My name is Scott and in 2015, I bought a Ram ProMaster City to live in. Even though I didn’t know much about RV’s and campervans, I set about building the van out as a minivan camper. And in April of 2016, I moved into my minivan full time.
Over the years, I’ve learned you don’t need to have a big skill set to build your own campervan. And that living as a minimalist and utilizing solar power can be a less expensive way to live. I’ve also learned that a minivan can be a very comfortable home.
Please follow along as I document my journey.
In an effort to help viewers search for the best prices on products that I use, I’ve started an Amazon Influencer link:

Beautiful. I think inlets are especially energetic, lots of movement of currents / tides ( fresh water meeting saltwater is “brackish”) I think if you look that particular river up, the salt content is mixed in for 8 miles up the river.

I'm in Sacramento and the heat has not relented for weeks. If you're back in this region in the spring, check out Feather Falls near Marysville. It's something like the fifth tallest water fall in California and when I took my granddaughter there several years ago, we were able to van camp for free. Also in the area, Table Mountain has some of the best spring wildflower displays in the state. Love that Mendocino headlands trail. Glass Beach in Fort Bragg is interesting, too.

From National Geo. An estuary is an area where a freshwater river or stream meets the ocean. In estuaries, the salty ocean mixes with a freshwater river, resulting in brackish water. Brackish water is somewhat salty, but not as salty as the ocean. An estuary may also be called a bay, lagoon, sound, or slough.

Mendocino is a frequent stop for us, though we usually stay at Van Damme or MacKerricher state parks. Beautiful area, and lots of redwoods east of Ft Bragg. Just don’t plan to get gas in Mendocino-as a tourist town, their prices are among the highest in the US.

I love your question about the saltwater and the river/fresh water. There are animals and a whole ecosystem that specifically exists in brackish water, which is the areas where salt and fresh water meet. I love your inquisitiveness (if that's a word), and your curiosity, and it's not a silly question al all! It's those that stop asking questions that stop growing. It's our curiosity that makes us deeply and fundamentally human. :) So, keep being curious and keep making your charming videos... and stay safe out there!

Mendocino is so lovely, but crowded when I was there and expensive. That road in is really a doozy alright. I recommend following Hwy 1 and 101 all the way up from LA for great temps and wonderful views, great food opportunities and ready gas. There is always somewhere to stop. Goofing around in the Redwoods is also wonderful. You can’t run out of scenery and walking opportunities and road conditions are never as risky as the alternatives. I’ve driven it in terrible rain and when all the other roads had ice but never a problem except maybe a slide or washout around Humbolt bay but CalTran is always fixing it without delay.

Estuaries are the borderlands between salt- and freshwater environments. When river water meets sea water, the lighter fresh water rises up and over the denser salt water. Sea water noses into the estuary beneath the outflowing river water, pushing its way upstream along the bottom.

I am sure you are glad you went to Mendocino! We lived in San Ramon long ago and van camped in that whole area. Miss it so badly! Now I am stuck in the Atlanta area and have been very solar /heat sick for about two weeks. Wish I could drive my little NV outta here for a West Coast Ocean Breeze moment. When I waved goodbye to the Pacific Ocean at the point of Monastery Beach before boarding that one stop plane to Atlanta I cried as though someone had died. It was a long time ago, therefore, I have no clue what it is like or even accessible today, but quite a drive South of Mendocino was a little beach campsite called La Jalama Beach that drew windsurfers and had a burger shack. It was always a favorite long weekend getaway for me when I lived in LA to bundle up in my hoodie and whale and windsurfer watch and let the ocean salt and sea wind sandblast out my sinuses and skin and clear my head of all things. I have a sensitive environmental disposition. It became my favorite city detox spot. Thanks for the memory moment. That heatwave here was brutal being in my van. All I kept thinking was I need to head to the coast stat! But I had to stick around for a kid theatre performance that I wouldn’t have missed for the world! Happy Coast Trails!❤️

I get why it's so expensive there and why everyone wants to visit/live there. It's so beautiful! And you have your sweater on! This Texan is jealous for sure. I have a dc/dc charger and I love it. It works great in addition to the solar panel. I have a spare one if you want it. I thought my charger had gone bad so I replaced it. Later I realized it was the freaking FUSE. The old one is about 2 years old but if you want it let me know and I'll ship it to a post office (general delivery) near you. It doesn't come with a warranty.... :) That's why I was asking how you tested everything. I knew I should have been more thorough with that step before I started replacing parts.

Oh that’s so nice of you to offer. Thanks. But, I don’t want a DC to DC charger. I like having all my power coming from solar so that I don’t need to rely on driving or idling for power. With gas prices and a faulty engine, I’m normally cutting down on my driving.

Can't go wrong with any of that coast..Big Sur, Mendocino, Ft Bragg and all the way up to Crescent City. I've always heard that all those spots I mentioned don't allow overnight vehicle stays and are pretty strict...good thing your rig is stealth. Fort Bragg was a favorite of mine as a kid..glass beach and Redwoods right close by. Great vid as always.

I haven’t been “stealth”. I don’t know how. I’ve just been doing what I always do and not worrying about what people think of me. Since I always leave my door open, several people have stopped and chatted with me. Everyone has been very nice.

@@StaticCamperVan I was referring to the authorities being strict. I definitely enjoy the aspect of having an open door welcoming a social interaction!

Did you stop at Glass Beach? Such a cool place to see. Great sea caves south of there if you happen to have a sea kayak with you. 😊

I’m having the same charging issues and it’s driving me crazy. I’m rethinking the fridge/freezer.

Watch all your videos. Ironically, am also here in Mendo to escape heat of San Jouquin Valley. Been renting here for years.....for me, Nirvana. Good groceries (a little expensive) at Harvest Market on Lansing. Enjoy your stay.

Love the veiw of the spot you are in now. It does look relaxing . Is there a difference between a down duvet and a bed comforter? Anyways , thanks for all the positive energy you give to so many through your videos. God bless you.🙏🏽

I believe duvet and comforter are interchangeable words. The big difference is natural goose and duck down instead of polyester batting as a filling.
