Subsequence for Teletype: Patching and Interface How-to

Музыка

Get it at github.com/dstroud/subsequence
Subsequence is a chord-based sequencer with a harmonizer function that is fed from an external CV source. It runs on Monome Teletype and uses Grid as an interface.
With it, you can quickly create up to 4 chord progressions, sequence those into a composition using the Pattern Arranger, then send the chords out over i2c and CV 1-3 while CV 4 carries the output of the harmonizer. Even if you don't have polyphonic sound sources, the harmonizer is a fun way to explore adding chord-based structure to your Eurorack system.

I’m learning modular with VCV rack because I was eyeing one of those palette cases and your vids are so so inspiring! ❤ thank you! I envision making a condensed box that sounds like this that I can use with my elektron synths!

It was a synth patch in Ableton Live which is hilarious considering I have so much neglected MIDI gear I should hook up 😓.

Probably the most useful script I've seen in Teletype! Would it be possible to implement another scene to use the CHORD algorithm in Plaits repurposing two CV outs to pitch and chord selection (via HARMONICS) instead of sending the chord information via i2c?

Thanks so much Marco. Funny you mention that idea, I have been thinking about scripting some sort of converter for Plaits/Elements’ chords modes but I hadn’t even though about adding it as a new scene for Subsequence. EDIT x2: I have this working but it requires a custom firmware for Plaits to add Teletype’s chords. Let me play around with it a bit to make sure it’s working well like I want and I’ll have something out prob by this weekend.

@@ModularBeat the custom table chords in Plaits have already been developed in the Mutable Instruments forum (look for Unified Plaits alt firmware by the user Lylem), so it shouldn't be difficult to change them to your taste. It will be more limited than the i2c protocol that you are using (I think that Plaits can use only 11 chords) but it will be a powerful resource nonetheless 😄 Also, I would love to try it, but I don't own a Teletype yet, so I couldn't try the script even if I wanted to. I'm looking forward getting one soon.

Sounds good, this is something I have been meaning to play with anyway! I was actually able to fit more chords in the Plaits firmware so we can definitely get them all in there. Cheers.

@@ModularBeat Funny, a year later I get a Grid to play with this script (I got the Teletype some time ago). Now I'm interested in Dreamsequence, but I don't own a Crow yet... Always eager to try these fantastic programs you make. Keep it up!

I love this functionality. Can the script be run on Crow or does it need Teletype to operate?

Teletype is required. I think Crow and Grid are both devices, not hosts, so I don't think the script could be adapted for just Crow.

@@daughtersofdivorce6803 Crow can def store scripts, too! It just can't use Grid as an interface (AFAIK). So you could maybe try to adapt some of the functionality here into a Crow script, but with no Grid interface it'd be pretty limited. This comparison of Crow vs TT might be helpful: monome.org/docs/crow/faq/

Thanks! I honestly have fallen behind in and not tested either version. Not looking forward to reverse-engineering my own code to find out 😥. Did you ever have it working on previous versions? I ask in case it’s just an issue with installing the script (which requires some unusual steps)
