@ModularBeatАй бұрын
I think that both Teletype and Norns are probably the best way to get into musical coding stuff. Some great tutorials ("studies") and the community will help you along the way. I came in with no coding experience to speak of and have been able to create some tools that I'm really proud of. The experience is pretty different between the two, thought. Teletype is extremely quick to get into and will have you making interesting things right away. It can easily replace a dozen modules in my case and is great for trying out new ideas. Where Teletype becomes frustrating is when you have a more complex script idea (especially when Grid is involved) and fitting everything into one script becomes like the world's most complex game of Tetris. If you're good at keeping the scope of your projects reasonable-- or just like the challenge of doing impossible stuff, Teletype is hard to beat. Norns, on the other hand, is a total sandbox where you can do whatever you want, including audio. You're really limited by your own ability whereas on Teletype you're limited by your ability + the system constraints. The language Norns uses, Lua, seems really natural compared to the extremely-concise and often confusing stuff that you'll make in Teletype. I dread ever having to go back to revisit my old Teletype code which looks like insane nonsense to me now, but I've taken months-long breaks from my Norns code and had no trouble picking it back up. So I guess I'd summarize this way: if you want to make more complex music tools, do audio/DSP, or build interfaces for Grid, I'd go with Norns. If love modular and are interested in exploring musical coding in a really direct way, Teletype is awesome. Worth mentioning that Teletype is available for free in VCV Rack, with support for a virtual or real Grid. Virtual TT also makes it easier to develop vs the module (which can only connect to a Grid or keyboard at once-- not both!). I'd suggest giving that a try and working through the Teletype studies. You'll know pretty quickly if it works for you.

I'm not wild about 1U because there aren't many modules that take special advantage of the more horizontal form factor, but it's a good way to squeeze in a few more modules when you don't have space for 2 rows of full-size modules. AFAIK there's nothing stopping other brands from adopting the same features (and some have) so I don't see this as being anticompetitive. More... expanding options. I was using it for the resonator algorithm but then just got a Rangoon instead. Now it’s the only module sitting in my case that I’m not using. Looking for ideas and thoughts on it if you’re willing to share…
@ModularBeatАй бұрын
@Lk747CC TY! I'm embarrassingly basic with my usage of EX-- I got it for the multisample mode and have not explored much else beyond that other than some of the synth modes. Mostly that's a matter of convenience since I can send notes over i2c from Norns+Crow or Teletype. I believe it can now do multitimbral stuff which I am eager to dip into. I would feel more guilty about not getting more use out of EX, but I think there's a common problem with these multi-mode super modules: they can do a million different things, but this requires compromises in terms of the user interface and they end up being about as fun to operate as a toaster oven. That becomes a point of frustration when there are one or two modes that become so important to your workflow that they are constantly in use and you begin to feel the limitations of the UI. I think this issue is usually resolved by getting a dedicated module for whatever mode you end up using EX for. Your situation with Rangoon being a perfect example. So, I guess my longwinded non-answer here is that I think you and I are in pretty much the same spot with respect to EX 😀. I've found replacements for the modes that I have used most-often (second Norns for sampling and OXI Coral for Plaits) and am not sure where to go from here. In the past with Disting IV, I forced myself to learn some new algos by putting it in a small case and cracking open the manual (or Modes app on iPhone) for ideas. I think it's time to start doing that again. I'll keep posting my patch notes here and am always open to new ideas if you come across anything cool to share.
