The duct tape trick is one of those times you slap your forehead and say "well DUHHH why didn't I think of that?" I'm going to use it on my miter saw too!. I nominate that one for the best tip ever! The drilling jig for dowling is great too!
I'm a hand tool guy but always find something in your videos to take away and use to improve my work, thank you for making the excellent content that you do.

You're welcome, Timber! Thanks for watching.
This channel and Micheal have no idea of how much this will help me. THANK YOU BOTH.
Collin, I have been using clear packaging/shipping tape instead of duct tape. The packaging tape provides a smoother/slicker surface.

Zero clearance inserts are quick and easy to make. I wouldn't want tape residue on my saw. I do appreciate the tip videos, I watch them all.

I'll echo everyone else that the zero-clearance duct tape idea is brilliant. How did that never occur to me? Also, I like that 90% of Colin's videos start with him telling us that we're going to have some fun. And he's never wrong. Love these.

While I seldom need thin strips, I am always trimming boards to final thickness, which leaves a "thin strip" to either fall into the slot or shoot back at me. I spent hours making my zero clearance insert for a saw that wasn't easy to fit one onto. I wish I had thought about the duct tape first. 👍🏻👍🏻

Good afternoon Colin, thanks for another splendid tip tutorial. You posted some time ago about cutting large holes out on the drill press and showed drilling a few holes to assist the cut, I cannot seem to find it again, can you post the link please as I have 8*51mm holes to drill in a 12mm ply sheet for an indoor bowls cup holder, and would like to view your tip again to refresh my memory? Cheers John in sunny Surbiton UK
That’s the easiest zero clearance insert I’ve ever seen. Cool.

You can do the same on the scroll saw, when cutting fretwork. It will support the workpiece and you're less likely to ruin your work by chipouts etc.

The best part is that it'll work even for the cheapest worksite saws that you can't even make a zero-clearance insert for thanks to their design (like mine).

I have a cheapo little tablesaw I bought for €100 in Lidls here (in Ireland) ... no zero-clearance insert but a big gap either side of the blade... 🙄😒.... that duct-tape idea is perfect for me.. I also like the mods to the vertical drilling jig & the thin strip cutting jig... Thanks Colin & tip contributers 😎👍☘

You will have that giant gap on many saws. It's necessary, so you can make mitre cuts. I guess on the less pricey machines they max out profits a bit by not including another inlay/inset ;o)

Hi Colin! Thank You! and Please tell Michael by Vancouver I said Thank You! I am definitely going to try Duct Tape and might just even leave it on the saw. Three years ago I purchased a Rockwell 7241 contractor's saw and the blade insert on this thing is horrible. I think the design engineer used an etch o sketch for the drawing. Making a zero clearance insert is a real challenge. Since it is a portable saw, the blade spins at a faster RPM and it really kicks up a dust storm! I've used masking tape over the insert to mitigate dust but duct tape sounds like a fantastic idea!

On the band saw idea, I would want my brush securely attached. If the double sided tape ever fails, what happens to the band saw wheel? Perhaps use a self-tapping washer head screw (the washer is in the screws mold so it is one piece) and a wide brush. Cut a slot somewhere that you don't need the brushes, like off to the side of the wheel, and towards the door so you can get to it easily and attach it there. As it wears out, you could loosen it and move the brush in and retighten the screw.
Nice simple idea

install a board on back of miter saw. ,one piece on both sides, if necessary shin to be square across the blade,,,now cut through ,which leaves a witness mark ,simply mark piece to be cut. and line up with cut end of back board

I'm not too sure about the duct tape. Once you remove the tape, you will end up with a sticky table top and that's gonna make it harder to slide the board and ruin the cut.

Doesnt the tape zero clearance trick put plastic and adhesive on the blade ?

Here is one I use a lot when doing multi layer glue ups to prevent the pieces from slipping around as you clamp them. Once the piece is coated with glue I drop a single grain of coarse salt on each end then apply the clamps the salt acts to hold the piece from slipping just long enough for the clamps to take hold.

I saw one video where he used a drop of super glue, on each end of the board. I don't remember if he used an activator but it adhered, instantly and held the wood for the wood glue to dry.

Sounds like that would work as well.
A tablesaw with a splitter blade, You can put tape om both sides of the blade.
Always learn something from your videos. Recently purchased some “PVC Tape” to cover the kerf on my Miter saw, but have not yet tried it. In my experience, duct tape leaves behind TERRIBLE adhesive residue, which hardens and is nearly impossible to remove. Some other kinds of tape might work better. Like the idea, but not duct tape.

I agreed with you then googled "Remove Duct Tape Adhesive". There are numerous solutions but I think the best are: Rubbing Alcohol or WD40. thanks for your comment Joe, it got me thinking and I learned something.

I'll try that PVP Tape. I've found that electrical contact cleaner or brake cleaner makes short work of that nasty duct achieve.

I have a glue question, my TiteBond blue often seperates, can it be restored?
@bobd5119
5 жыл бұрын
I haven't tried it, but I've seen suggestions to mix a little vinegar into the glue.
The duck tape idea is good, but this is a perfect example of a place where you do not want duck tape, but want "gaffer tape". I have almost completely switched, as gaffer tape is superior in many ways; in this case it is superior because it is almost always "residue free", as opposed to the gluey mess duck tape often leaves. The only place I use duck tape anymore is when I need its' waterproofness. And, BTW, the waterproof nature of it is why it is properly called duck tape, not duct tape: It was created to waterproof ammo boxes in WW2, and GIs named it duck tape.
Great video!! Zero Clearance Duct Tape is a great idea but won’t it leave residue that is a pain to get off...

Stick it on the bottom of the throat plate. Or a wipe with solvent will get any residue off easily.

Just make a very simple side fence and clamp it parallel to the saw blade.
we bombarded Al btw
Terry also.
The zero clearance will now become a well used tip by me. I to have a large gap and tried making a zero clearance plate. It does not work well.
What a pity that zero clearance insert does not work when using a riving knife. With my saw (Bosch GTS 635-216) it would be a pain to detach the riving knife momentarily, I wouldn't even know how (does anyone??).
Is that possible to tell us some story about your woodworking life?? How did you become woodworker and how did you interested in, please.

@@MarkMcCluney lose the riving knife , if you're cutting piece a that needs a zero clearance insert , you don't need it .
I didn't know anyone still used dowels, since before the death of the dinosaurs.
Duct tape is cloth and I would be afraid it would catch and get pulled down into my saw creating a very bad situation.

Wonky rip fence and no riving knife makes me feel a little nervous ....
How about putting a duct tape under the throat play. That's what I did so you don't put duct tape on your saw top
Why not just make a zero clearance insert ? Duct tape on a table saw is just wrong.
