The duct tape trick is one of those times you slap your forehead and say "well DUHHH why didn't I think of that?" I'm going to use it on my miter saw too!. I nominate that one for the best tip ever! The drilling jig for dowling is great too!

While I seldom need thin strips, I am always trimming boards to final thickness, which leaves a "thin strip" to either fall into the slot or shoot back at me. I spent hours making my zero clearance insert for a saw that wasn't easy to fit one onto. I wish I had thought about the duct tape first. 👍🏻👍🏻

Hi Colin! Thank You! and Please tell Michael by Vancouver I said Thank You! I am definitely going to try Duct Tape and might just even leave it on the saw. Three years ago I purchased a Rockwell 7241 contractor's saw and the blade insert on this thing is horrible. I think the design engineer used an etch o sketch for the drawing. Making a zero clearance insert is a real challenge. Since it is a portable saw, the blade spins at a faster RPM and it really kicks up a dust storm! I've used masking tape over the insert to mitigate dust but duct tape sounds like a fantastic idea!

On the band saw idea, I would want my brush securely attached. If the double sided tape ever fails, what happens to the band saw wheel? Perhaps use a self-tapping washer head screw (the washer is in the screws mold so it is one piece) and a wide brush. Cut a slot somewhere that you don't need the brushes, like off to the side of the wheel, and towards the door so you can get to it easily and attach it there. As it wears out, you could loosen it and move the brush in and retighten the screw.

Here is one I use a lot when doing multi layer glue ups to prevent the pieces from slipping around as you clamp them. Once the piece is coated with glue I drop a single grain of coarse salt on each end then apply the clamps the salt acts to hold the piece from slipping just long enough for the clamps to take hold.

Always learn something from your videos. Recently purchased some “PVC Tape” to cover the kerf on my Miter saw, but have not yet tried it. In my experience, duct tape leaves behind TERRIBLE adhesive residue, which hardens and is nearly impossible to remove. Some other kinds of tape might work better. Like the idea, but not duct tape.

The duck tape idea is good, but this is a perfect example of a place where you do not want duck tape, but want "gaffer tape". I have almost completely switched, as gaffer tape is superior in many ways; in this case it is superior because it is almost always "residue free", as opposed to the gluey mess duck tape often leaves. The only place I use duck tape anymore is when I need its' waterproofness. And, BTW, the waterproof nature of it is why it is properly called duck tape, not duct tape: It was created to waterproof ammo boxes in WW2, and GIs named it duck tape.

Just make a very simple side fence and clamp it parallel to the saw blade.

The zero clearance will now become a well used tip by me. I to have a large gap and tried making a zero clearance plate. It does not work well.

What a pity that zero clearance insert does not work when using a riving knife. With my saw (Bosch GTS 635-216) it would be a pain to detach the riving knife momentarily, I wouldn't even know how (does anyone??).

I love the duct tape but the only problem is that the riving knife behind the blade will not go through and has to be dealt with

Adel Guindi Agreed. The riving knife needs more presence in KZread vids! I wonder if we could just put the duct tape on one side?

Duct tape is cloth and I would be afraid it would catch and get pulled down into my saw creating a very bad situation.

How about putting a duct tape under the throat play. That's what I did so you don't put duct tape on your saw top
