Overview - Super tough day out. Snell's is known for producing trophy bass. One of my buddies hooked into a 8-10 lb bass in July and of the 5 subscribers at the tournament I talked to who had practiced at Snell's this month, each caught at least one bass in the 2.5 - 5 lb range.
Lots of dinks in the 6-13 inch range caught with about 6 fish in the 14-14.75 inch range caught (heartbreaking :P). 90% of the field was throwing wacky rigged and texas rigged senkos in the first and second ponds.
I got to do a few hours of fishing myself when I wasn't walking around checking for fish to weigh-in. I hooked into a solid 2 lber on a frog but attempted a full force frog hookset on my 10 lb braided line (epic fail on my part). My line shattered and the irritated fish jumped two in the water trying to dislodge the frog from its mouth. I ended up catching 10 bass in the 4-12 inch range, most of them caught on 4" and 5" GY wacky and texas rigged senkos with a few coming from a 3" BPS stickworm on a drop shot rig.
The tournament looked grim with no fish weighed in at 3:30 (tournament ended at 4:00). When all hope seemed lost, Wenjun hooked into a stud fishing a senko around the only island on the main pond. She didn't arrive at the tournament until 1:00 pm, but she came at a good time because the wind picked up around 2:30, moving the baitfish through the bottleneck created from the island and breaking up the surface of the water making it easier to fool the bigger, older bass in the gin clear water.
