You main bearing mismatch reminds me of the Buick 3.0 of the early 1980's. The mains are not in a straight line. At the place I worked, they had one we were replacing rods and mains, in the car. The story goes, finding the proper size bearings was a nightmare. In fact I think after replacing them the motor did not turn. Now the boss being fed up ordered a crankshaft kit and had the block line bored. After getting the block back the crankshaft did not turn again after tightening it down. Lots of phone time with GM we found out you cannot line hone that block, the mains were not straight. Also some of the top and bottom bearing shells were different sizes. When assembling the short block at the factory. They would start with standard bearings. Now if needed they would make, or have, custom halfs to make everything work. Now this information came from GM engineers. If you've ever messed around with one of these 3.0L carburetored motors, they suck!!! Shake and rattle, none of them run smooth. Thank God they were short lived...

When the EJ came out it was a world class engine for the Japanese. Far more advanced features than most American engines and on par or beating most other imports. All from a tiny company with less than 1% market share. Toyota sold over twice as many Corollas in in the USA 1990 as Subaru sold cars. The EJ won many races, took many records, was incredibly reliable, and had a lot of positive attributes. There have been issues over the years, but it was overall a very successful platform. Keep in mind they are working on a 20 year old engine now and that it was far cheaper than anything Porsche. :)

In terms of the line hone, if the other journals are smaller, could all of the journals be honed to the same size and use thinner bearing in the center jornals and thicker bearings on the end journals? Are the tolerances such that that sort of action is not possible or is the stress on the journals and/or just outer journals too great for that? Honestly did not know.
@802Garage

According to the Subaru manual, the crank journals are not actually different diameters. The only very slight difference is 0.0001 that's one ten thousandth of an inch of bearing thickness, thinner on bearings #1 and #3. All oil clearances are even listed as the same. Not really sure where the confusion came from unless I'm missing something.

After watching Davin work on a Subaru boxer, as well as Ivan over at Pine Hollow Auto Diagnostics, I now know to avoid them. Kudos Davin for soldiering through this build!
I've modified tools to get things done too. It's called "use of available materials"

If you want to see this done by a master that does it all day long at a very high level, check out the YT channel “subi performance” out of Germany. If you go back and watch the older videos, there were many made in English although it seems the guy that created the channel “Andi” has given up on putting out videos in other languages than Deutsche.

This motor gonna spin a bearing in no time. I’m confident in that
It's always a pleasure seeing you bring an old engine back to life. Thank you for sharing.
Great video again. Greetings from Belfast in Northern Ireland. I love the fact that rather then spend more time running around trying to buy some long-reach circlip pliers you modified the long-nosed pliers. It was probably cheaper the buy a new set of long-nosed pliers, too. Some of our, so called, tradesmen nowadays would never have thought to do that. Keep the videos coming.
Master cylinder snap ring pliers can be useful for deep-set snap rings like this. I ended up needing to buy a pair to, ironically, remove and install a snap ring in a master cylinder.
RTV on the main caps (around the case bolt holes) helps prevent oil and crank-pressure getting from crank-case into water galley. You seem to have missed that on your case halves :x

Cool video still crazy the engineering behind the Subaru motor.
I love hearing your thoughts, ideas and opinions while your building this engine! I think the extra love needed to build this engine will be worth it once you fire it up and go for a drive.
unwilllingness to use proper machine shop with fixtures to line hone WILL result in early failure. I understand your reluctance in creating new alliances when you are unlikely to do another Subi. For those of us who want/need to rebuild a Subi it would have been nice to watch. Nice catch on oil journal. #3 does suck without the SnapOn. Needle nosed solution is great .....well done.
Another great video. I'm enjoying this import engine rebuild more than I thought I would (and more than Davin seems to be =] ).
Just remember the Rockauto tip of the day. "Don't forget to install the inside - farthest away from the block hole wrist pin clips. Before you install the pistons..."
Great job!! A good mechanic will always improvise to get the job done, those needle nose were glad to get repurposed! Oil is cheaper than metal!!
4:17 That "swoosh mark" is the Fuji Heavy Industries logo
I held my breath when you put the halves together
Love these videos. Keep them coming fellas!!
I like how he continued the pistons assembly with the modified pliers
Good to see that I didn’t see anyone whinging about the live on the bearings. Jay from Real St, copped a real bashing in one of his rebuilds

About the what on the bearings?
Good decision on how you handled the main bearings, keeping with the stock bolts and torque specs, with these engines it always takes at least two sets of bearings
you are definitely on the A Team
We need more K24 Subaru Impreza WRX’s again
That really is a beautiful colour for the block.
Good afternoon Davin, your affection for the Subaru is quite evident, looks good to me, very impressed with it having achieved such a substantial mileage. Well done

yeah substantial mileage with bad bearings for how many thousands of miles. People say how reliable Subaru's are, but almost every person I know that owns one, either has head gasket issues of some sort, or have to add a quart of oil every thousand miles. Yet people love them. They are great cars, I am a fan of the WRX series, and STi of course. Our family drove Subaru's in the early 80's having 2 of them in the family. My Dad will never buy one again. haha. Long Story.

Another way to force you into going to the dealer. Even experienced Subaru junkies have to hate this!
These engines are a lot of work to build correctly but I think your doing an awesome job for your first crack at one. Some friends of mine run a subaru performance shop and they just work ok these things all day long and have built a few sti's that have run quarter mile times in the high 9's. Ill stick with my honda's because they are easier and cheaper to deal with lol.
Omg, I can't wait to see what you do with a Mazda. Going to be a real exciting experience for you.

Always good to keep those "custom" tools around! We actually talked about assigning a specific toolbox in the shop to house all our custom tool creations. Might even make for a good video someday to highlight every tool we've made through the years. 😂
For Daven's next challenge, he "Ups the Ante" and rebuilds an EG33. 😆
Interesting build. 👍
I may have commented before, but I know this has been done quite a bit. I haven't seen it done on this channel just yet though. How about a rebuild of a Honda B Series engine (B16 or B18), or a K series engine? I don't know. Just a thought I guess.
I find modified needle nose tend to be better snap ring pliers than snap ring pliers anyways. :D
I would love to see Davin go to Jay Leno’s garage and for them to work together. What a cool crossover it could be.
Outstanding!!
These boxer engines went out of their way to be a pain in the ass.

Saya mendapat pengetahuan lebih dari video anda HAGERTY, sukses selalu. I'm from Indonesian and I'm mechanic
Thank God they were short lived...
awesome sauce
I've done a few Volkswagens I'm getting ready to pull my outback XT turbo motor out and try this rebuild deal
Id love to see davins reaction when rebuilding a rotary engine. maybe an idea ?
I have rebuilt a couple of these, a bit different for sure.
Think the short block is hard? Wait until you need to figure out where all the hoses on the intake manifold go...

That will be easy when compared to a Honda CVCC engine.
I wonder if you reverse the treads on one side of block, it might help to evenly tighten the two half together without twisting the block.
"Almost looks like a boomerang." DUDE. That is a Fuji Heavy Industries / Subaru logo. Its on lots of Subaru parts.
nice looking block, now i have to muster up some energy and pull the front end off my FB25 as the bottom timing chain tensioner is making noises....... Dang
Great Modification.😄 QUESTIONS: 1)How do those ports where you put the wrist pins and wrist pin c clips through get sealed to keep the oil and blowby inside the cylinders? Cheers😁
Almost like Volkwagen knew what they were doing when they designed the original boxer 4 engine.
you should try and get one of the 1st gen chevy colorados with the 5 cylinder engine enxt, that would be interesting
By the time you're done with this engine you would've done 10 V8s ...

Love all the rebuild series. But I’m just sitting here wondering how he’s able to get ahold of all those King main bearings when I’m having major issues finding King XP or Clevite 77 mains for my VG30 rebuild. Everywhere is either canceling my order or just say there’s a massive backorder from those manufacturers.
A bit of work, but nothing feels better than success! If you’re into Subi’s then the Subi-Performance channel is interesting. All in German but good nonetheless.

What I'm curious about is when you're installing the wrist pin clips, can a clip actually "fall" in between the cylinder and the piston? That would be a nightmare.
Lubricity? First time hearing that word for me sorry. Love the build by the way.
This may have already been stated, but it's my understanding that a sealant needs to be placed between the case halves in a very particular way...at least the repair manual specifies that. Just curious why he didn't do that. Japanese machine surfaces are amazingly precise but it would suck if you put that in your car only to find a leak that requires full teardown to repair.
Subaru flat-four: What you get when a bunch of engineers decide they know how to make a Boxer engine better than Ferdinand Porsche. :)

Does the number 1 piston have to perfectly level to the top of block on compression stroke to make a TDC or after TDC
3rd still lands on the podium
Are you keeping the lightened harmonic balancer? Do a quick search on those, it’s not recommended.
Those engines are a pain ! My son had one… threw it away !
After crushing the car body, where is this going to go when complete?
for the block sealer, you place it on smooth and not as a bead?
Alguien sabe que grasa esta utilizando??
U guys should throw that motor into a Impreza coupe
Bizarre. I never was a fan of this engine and now I like it even less. Davin, nice work, it looks great.
Looks great and does seem a bit nerve wracking. I don't like the idea of parts of the block moving around independently over time.
You should do a Chevy ls 6.0
I bet you dream at night about 4g63s xD
No sealant on the block halves??
Check out “subi performance “ on KZread although he is German guy he does some amazing high performance builds of these engines and the builds are quite detailed. You may have to go back a while to get the rebuilds in English but his detail is worth it. Love the rebuilding processes.
Thank you for not pulling the torque wrench 3 more times after it clicks.
What size piston heads are those? Did you bore out the cylinder walls?

Keep doing what you are doing. Maintenance is key. Make sure you change the coolant every 60,000 miles at most too, and keep the cooling system in general in good condition. Always use high quality premium fuel. An air oil separator is one of the best reliability mods with zero downsides. You could look into the cylinder 4 coolant reroute, but jury is out on how necessary and effective it is.
What is this coating on the engine block?
no sealant?
How would you compare rebuilding the Subaru boxer to rebuilding the VW boxer? I would hear some non car guys say "I like Subaru because they got engine ideas from VW." It isn't true, but I don't have a great way of explaining it other than the fact that the VW was air cooled.
@chash7335

VW (Dr Porsche) got their ideas from Dr Ledwinka at Tatra.
@802Garage
Жыл бұрын
According to the Subaru manual, the crank journals are not actually different diameters. The only very slight difference is 0.0001 that's one ten thousandth of an inch of bearing thickness, thinner on bearings #1 and #3. All oil clearances are even listed as the same. Not really sure where the confusion came from unless I'm missing something.
Guess there will be no honing with a torque plate. Sad. Always beats me why people go through all the trouble of stripping down to the block, getting it machined but not doing that
Best line of this video: "put a thread lubricant on your nuts" :)
