Subaru P0026 P0076 P0077 Variable Valve Timing VVT Solenoid Testing and Replacement
Today we're looking at Subaru's Variable Valve Timing (VVT) Solenoid. P0026, P0076 and P0077 deals with bank 1; which is the right hand side or passenger side of the engine. We will deal with the driver's side in the next episode.
This Subaru spool valve, or oil switching solenoid valve as it is commonly called, controls the variable valve lift. The system optimizes the intake valve lift by switching between the low lift cam and the high lift cam according to the engine speed. The amount of intake valve lift is varied by controlling an oil switching solenoid valve according to signals from the ECM.
A faulty VVT control solenoid can inhibit improper idling, engine hesitation and pinging under acceleration. The part number for the solenoid is Subaru 10921AA040. This part number applies for many years and models. However, check the specs for your specific vehicle.

Great video. In my experience, my scanner was throwing a P0021 "A" Camshaft Position - Timing Over-Advanced or System Performance (Bank 2); which is the driver side. In most cases, that is due to improper vehicle oil maintenance. Most VVT Solenoids fail or do not function properly because of oil sludge or oil contamination. The sludge hinders flow through valve screens and causes the solenoid to function incorrectly. First I change my oil and filter then I only remove the solenoid, attached by one bolt. More than likely you'll find the solenoid screens gunked up with oil sludge. Use brake cleaner to thoroughly remove the sludge on and in the screens. Replace and wipe the codes. It can take a couple of cycles before codes are completely gone. If the solenoid comes out clean with no sludge then use alligator clips attached to the solenoids two prongs and your battery to see if the plunger moves up and down. If properly connected and no movement, replace the solenoid.

Looking at a friend's Forester & both VVT's show just a hint of resistance at first then nothing. I'm skeptical because I wouldn't think they would both go bad at the same time. Thoughts?
Great video man
Thank you!
Might want to add in the torq setting for the vvt
Thanks for the video, i just wonder if i pull out the solinoid will the engine oil need to be empty?
Did you ever do a video for the driver side replacement?
My sisters bf sprayed a hose on the engine while it was running to rinse off some engine degreaser and it started running bad like a mis fire and it has the p0076 code. Runs terrible. I hope it dries out and fixes it self. I'll check the connector first.
I replace the VVT from driver side and works perfect for 20 or 30 miles, then stars again check engine light and start to shake a little bit, so i take out the battery terminals for 10 minutes put it back and is a new car again, 20 or 30 miles later start to make trouble again, any sugestions?...NEED HELP PLEASE
My car is throwing a P0077 its 2013 hyundai. I have already taken it too the company's authorised repair station but they told me that they will have to open the whole engine and check the timing chain, when its just a solenoid issue, please suggest what should i do now ?
I took the head apart and discovered that in operation only one intake valve is working till throttle is at higher mode to then set pin with oil pressure . And one intake valve is holding fuel then dropping it at full throttle . I think this is dumb and not vvt it's on or off to one intake valve .
What is the name of the part you removed from engine? Mine it seems the gasket is leaking. At least I hope where its coming from.
Is it the same solenoid part # for both driver and passenger sides?
can i just take the one bolt off on the silenoid? and replace without taking the whole housing or do i have to take the 4 fasteners out too?

to only take out the solenoid there is just that 1 bolt you need to take off. the solenoid pulls right out and you put a new one in. i dont know why he went through all the trouble to take the whole damn part off when it is only the solenoid itself that is bad. smh.
I was getting P0076 on my Outback. Replaced this part and had noticable performance increase, however, the code came right back after clearing it and RPMs are still limited to 4k.. Any suggestions..?

Hey did you ever get your car fixed? Mine is doing the same thing and can’t figure it out
If you want to take this whole part off do you need to have the car empty of oil?

No. It takes pressure while the vehicle is on to move through the solenoid.
So the passager side is bank 1? Correct
