One thing I didn't realize the other day was that the e brake needs to be released to get the rear rotors off. I always have that on when the car is jacked up on one side, but didn't occur to me the e brake would hold the rotor on. You live and learn. Regardless, thank you again. It was an oldie but a goodie.

If you're like me, the old rotors were really hard to remove. But Subaru made a nice way to do it. The rotors have two bolt holes that don't get used except to remove the rotor. Take out one of the 12mm (I think) radiator mount bolts from the engine bay, and thread it into the empty hole. Use a ratchet to force the bolt into the spindle, separating the rotor in the process. No banging with a hammer, no man handling it. Just easy.

Useful, and helpful. It would help to note that at 1:00 the caliper bolts need to be removed by turning them what seems like clockwise (since the bolt is inserted from the back). A typical shade tree mechanic might (as I did) initially try to loosen those bolts by turning counterclockwise.

Just did all 4 on my 2006 Legacy this weekend. New rotors, pads, shims and boots. First brake job ever. Easy to do and man, so much fun! Took most of the day but like I say a blast. Parts came to about $250 so saved a ton of money. Somewhere my dad is smiling. Why does the bottom slide pin have that rubber piece? Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Love working on my Subie.

Killer video the video quality is awesome. Hate those videos people post and it looks like that recorded it wth a camera from the 80s lol. Just a quick tip what I do when compressing the caliper piston back into its bore. I set a used brake pad on the piston and then place the c-clamp on it and compress it that insures that the piston will go in straight and not bind up from going in crocked. I watched your epic tool box tour last year gotta catch up on the videos. Love the Svx too :)

I'm working on my 2003 BH Ej251 Outback. I found specs for the 03 Foz and I'm not sure if they are the same. The Foz is: Front Bracket: 59 ft-lb Caliper: 27.5 ft-lb Rear Bracket: 38.3 ft-lb Caliper: 27.5 ft-lb They are 4 Pot brakes, so are they the same? Thanks in advance!

I stopped by to help decide where the wear indicator should be, and I see that your wear indicator is on the top (trailing end) of the inner pad for the rear. The dealers repair manual is very badly written! A quick search showed up a reference that said wear indicators should generally be on the on the end of the pad that contacts a point on the rotor first as the rotor spins. So according to 'internet experts', the bottom of pads mounted behind the axle midline, as here. If that is true then it suggests you've got the inner pads on the wrong side, (similar to the way you found them). Interestingly in your case at 2:10 you can see the pad was thinner on the end without the wear indicator, so maybe there is something to that general suggestion. I don't know....

To anyone else doing this job without a lucky horseshoe: If you get to that point and it just won't come off 1. make sure the ebrake isn't on 2. get a hammer and start swinging.
