Subaru idle fix - idle relearn

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This should work on Subarus with an electronic throttle body. Please let us know how it worked for you. / mccauleysauto
The Subaru in this video is a 2009 Subaru Forester. 1) Turn off the lights, aircon, stereo or any system in the car that draws extra current on top of the engine.
2) Disconnect the battery for 30 mins.
3) Reconnect the battery.
4) Before you start the car for the first time, turn the key to the ON position but do NOT turn the engine over. Wait 10-15 seconds so the electronic throttle body or IACV has time to go to the factory programmed home position.
5) After waiting, start the car and let it idle without any load, lights, A/C etc.
6) Every 20 seconds or so the idle will be adjusted up and down as the ECU tries to adjust it towards a stoichiometric fuel / air mix.
7) Leave the engine running for a full 10 mins but DO NOT TOUCH THE ACCELERATOR during this time or turn on anything that will cause extra electrical current draw.
😎 Turn off the engine, and leave the key in the OFF position for at least 20 sec.
9) As per step (4) turn the key back to the ON position for 10-15 sec without actually starting the engine.
10) Start the engine and leave to idle for a further 5 minutes without touching the accelerator and without turning on other systems in the car.
11) Turn off the engine again and wait at least 20 sec before restarting.
12) Take the car for a test drive as the ECU should now be fully retrained.

The issue here is not the music or the quality of the this video itself, the really important thing in this presentation is the information, the step by step two and a half minutes Master Class that this guy had gifted to all of us. Wow... this save me hundreds of dollars and, if we put all other experiences shared here together, we can talk about hundreds of thousands $$$, $$$ saved... Thank You Man!!!... God Bless You and your Family!!! 2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek Primium

I was having the same issue with fluctuating and rough idle with my 2017 WRX. I'd turn on the AC or rear defrost and the car would start shaking and the RPMs would dive. The engine was also making a whining\ticking like noise for the first 10 minutes. Did a drive with a technician from Downtown Subaru in Toronto and was told it was normal because of the type of engine it is. Glad I came across this fix cause it absolutely works and fixed my issues. Maybe Downtown Subaru should start watching KZread videos!

Not normal, i have a 2018 forester, with 20k miles, tec at subaru said it was a dirty throttle body.. i was like dirty with 20000 miles. Did research and found out it was obviously something electronic, was suggesting to change to a high power battery, not the cheep subaru one tho

@@teebzr5975it can absolutely be just in this computer parameter issue. The computer learns as it goes and if it gets outside parameters that allow for weather, elevation, humidity, battery life and many other factors, those parameters have to be reset. You could make someone believe they have an expensive issue when they do not. The only reason I am back here is a refresh on the steps, as I know it works. It’s the actions needed if you do replace any sensors or your battery goes bad also. New sensor or a new battery, any time the battery is disconnected, these steps need taken. A wonky idle from these cars may not be ‘normal’ but given what I know, after owning one for almost 10 years, it’s not abnormal either.

My 2015 will drop in rpm once every few minutes for like a couple seconds after idling for 10-15 minutes and if the AC is on even just a little bit then it hesitates when shifting but I heard that’s kinda normal cause the engine is working hard to run and have the ac going at the same time.. I swapped the battery out cause the old one was going out. But doing these steps actually worked for yours? Cause we have the same FA motor

2008 wrx, built and pro tuned here: had the same issue, downshifting and coming to a stop my car would just barely not stall out every single time. It's been really making the car feel like shit and I was tempted to sell it because I checked the maf, boost leaks, Vaccum leaks etc and nothing, I thought even maybe the tune was done incorrectly. I followed the instructions and holy cow I'm literally in shock that it actually worked, I've never been so relieved in my life, well maybe that's an exagération but you guys get it.

Yeah, this hack works! My 2015 Forester 2.3 Premium 6MT (66K miles) was having a somewhat rough idle for about a year, down at about 600-700rpm when sitting at a stoplight or in stop-and-go traffic. I followed the procedure in the video, and to my surprise...it worked! It now has a smooth idle at about 850-900rpm, just like it did when I bought it new. I replaced the battery about two months ago so it was without power for a day, but after installing the battery I did not let it idle for 10 minutes, nor did I wait 20 seconds on off ignition and then restart and let it idle for another 5 minutes, as advised in this excellent video! Thank you, Subaru support, for never advising owners that when the engine management computer loses power that there is a friggin' reset procedure for the engine idle that has to be followed, like there is for the front driver's auto power window. Tossers...

Incredible! I was hesitant when I came across this video but it worked like a charm on my 2014 Subaru XV. I had removed the battery for a short period of time and after re-installing my idle was very rough and would stall out when I began to break and come to a stop. All my dash warning lights would light up and freak me out thinking I’d be in for an expensive trip to the mechanic. Fortunately, after following the steps in this video, the idle returned to normal and is driving brilliantly! Thank you!

Thanks so much! My 2016 Forester was disconnected from the battery for a few hours during an update of the Starlink system at the dealership. After I returned home, the Forester began to idle very low (~500 rpm), and stalled 3x. Your tip to reset the Idle Speed setting and get the car to ‘relearn’ the idle speed was awesome. Everything’s back to normal (or even better than normal)!

I just changed the battery on my 2017 forester, I notice it idles kind of low when the AC is off, but it seems okay when the AC is on... Also, my driver windows buttons for driver and passenger were acting up, the driver's side was not going down all the way without holding it down, and the driver's passenger windows button was not working.... other temporal issue was setting back the date, it was only allowing me to set the hour and it didn't allow me to change the minutes, date, etc. but it worked out later after turning off and on the car couple of times. seems an array of issues comes up after disconnecting the battery.

It worked on my 2012 Subaru Outback 2.5i with 88,000 miles. It recently had a new battery installed, then started idling erratically at stop signs and stop lights. It even stalled a couple of times at stop signs. I was told it was likely a dirty throttle box. So I cleaned the throttle even though it looked shiny clean to me. However it was still idling poorly afterward, so I did this idle reset. Now it purrs at stop signs. It likely saved me hundreds at the dealership! Thanks for posting!

She pulled up, and turned the car off but it wouldn't start once she returned. I thought it was the batter and had it replace. After starting the car it fluttered so I gassed it - party over! I recently noticed my 2016 Subie Impreza (base model) had been getting a subtle bit of a rumbling/shaking after a few seconds while waiting at the red light and would then go away. I read about the cleaning the throttle body, changing the air filter, and swapping the spark plugs but luckily I had my car's usual maintenance done and those things were all addressed so I got my car back (still had the rumbling/shaking), performed this procedure, did a test drive and BOOM...fixed! First off, thank you for the video. Out of the blue, my mom's 2015 Subaru Outback's engine started idling rough and she put it int Drive. I checked to see if there were any loose wires/rodent chewed wires/intake duct restrictions but couldn't find anything. The car has always been serviced at the Subaru dealership but even then, I found that both battery terminals were loose even though they were over tightened. On top of that, a "technician" apparently painted the terminals and clamps with some black paint and there was very little metal to metal connection. So I cleaned the terminals, bent the clamps so they wouldn't rotate when tightened and followed all the steps in the video. Worked like a charm.

And the car is working fine after two days of intense testing. Because I'm a bit lazy I did my reset without unplugging the battery. I turned off all the electrical systems. Turn the key into the contact position. Leave it like that for 10 seconds. After that I started the engine and left it running for 5 minutes. Repeated the process twice. Ta-da my car runs like new. Will report back in case it'll start making troubles again.

I am crazy grateful for this suggestion. I've had my car serviced multiple times and they've never been able to solve this, usually just saying "that's how these older cars run". But I often found a loss of power when accelerating from a stop and a rough idle that would drop rpm to stalling. I followed these instructions exactly and it now runs absolutely perfectly.

Thanks. Please post more DIY's. Subaru's are a learning curve.

Came for this fix and it worked. '10 Forester 2.5l 4spd auto w/101K mi, spark plugs and wires changed but had a low/rough idle near stalling, but fine at speed. Fair independent Mechanic didn't notice or know to reset idle. Subie forum described fix, video showed steps, and I just confirmed. Shortcut was I only disconnected battery for 25min. Followed rest of the steps. All good. 👍

I have a 2012 Subaru Legacy. The idle was bogging down a bit whilst first shifting into reverse, drive or when also making sharp turns whilst parking due to the drain of the power steering pump. I did the procedure outlined in the video and it certainly solved the issue. Thank you for the upload!

@McCauleysAuto 2005 Forester 150K miles. I needed to do head gaskets, valve adjustment. I did the plugs, cleaned MAF, new air filter element and cleaned the throttle body off the car & new cat/exhaust. I changed #1 bank (out) O2 sensor "NGK". Idle was erratic upon completion of the aforementioned. This procedure was the cure! I owe you a debt of gratitude. Much thanks for your insightful post! Regards, RR

Thanks for sharing this information. I will definitely try this. 5 months ago spent $4000 on my 2005 Subaru Outback and it's now jerking around especially at idle. The shop wants another $100 just to look. I'm so upset, the vehicle is not even worth $6000 now and I can't imagine spending more. Had 1993 Subaru Impreza for 300,000 miles with No problems. So I bought another and this idle problem has always been there somewhat, but yeah, I hope this works! :) Not mechanically inclined, but this I can definitely try. Thank you so much!

2006 Subaru 2.5L Impreza 80,000 miles. After disconnecting the battery, I changed air filter and cleaned MAF Sensor with CRC sensor spray. Holy Moses, the idle fluctuated and was about to stall. My wife cooked no dinner that evening messing up her perfectly good car. My brain was racing..... started looking to replace MAF, MAP, O2 & VVT Sensors, then I ran into this video. IT WORKED, nice and smooth idle rpm! Thanks! P.S.: I tried to remove and clen MAP snesor and I stripped the mounting screws. Those 2 are one soft screws. I had to order the screws from dealer. Then I will remove the screws and clean MAP Sensor.

My car has been having trouble with cold starts, it takes long to turn on and sometimes it stalls. I had a dirty air filter on it for a while and I recently replaced it and the battery but it still starts rough. I'm thinking of cleaning the MAF sensor next to see if that'll fix it. But does this work in fixing my starting problem?

I rarely comment but I HAVE to say this actually worked for me. I have a 2010 Forester and after having the airbags replaced I noticed it was being a bit funny when slowing down to a stop. I rang the service department at Subaru who said it shouldn't be an engine issue as the guy only disconnected the battery when replacing the airbag but to bring it in for them to take a look at it. Fearing they would charge me an arm and a leg to do so, I thought I'd try the internet first and found this video. I did the above procedure not having ANY expectations it would work but to my utter amazement ..it did! So thank you so much guys for sharing this info!!! I can sleep easy tonight.
