Subaru Forester Window Motor Removal

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

How to remove the window motor on a 2003 Subaru Forester XT without taking off the door or the window glass, or anything else for that matter.
This is my first instructional video... hope it was helpful. Clearly an amateur (at many things) but if it did help, leave a comment!

Just replaced the drivers side (US) window motor on my daughters 2007 Forester using Matt's method. 30 minutes total!!!! I removed each of the 4 regulator bolts one at a time and replaced them with 25mm long bolts to create that space needed to remove the motor without dropping the regulator. This video is what the internet was made for!!!! What a time saver. Thank you again for this post!!! Cheers!

Thanks very much, I am non-mechanical at all and was able to use your video to do the replacement on my driver side window motor. A couple of tips I got from other blogs were that I temporarily used longer bolts to hold the regulator in place whilst I was working so it wouldn't come loose but I could still push it clear. I also had a light and shaving mirror to see if things were lining up. Probably took me 2 hours. I was going slow and steady and made a rookie error when replacing the door card by refitting the metal bracket for the arm rest upside down. Took a while to get the screws lined up when fitting the motor. I had loosely fitted the two closest to the speaker hole but think that made it more difficult to get the one on the other side lined up. Having done it I would recommend fitting one of those screws first and then lining up screw on other side next. Again thanks for this tutorial wouldn't have attempted without this help. Thanks-Matthew

I wouldn't have been able to tackle this job without this vid. It's excellent thank you. Mine is a 2006 Forester and the driver's side window stopped working. Generally the same principles apply in removing the motor. One small complication is that the bolts holding the motor to the regulator are Philips head - making that part of the operation a bit trickier - but it's still possible. I used the same tool combo as Matt - but In this case substituted a broad-head Philip's driver. There was current at the wiring in and the problem ended up being a build up of discharge material on the armature. I cleaned this and the contact brushes - with some 1500grit paper, bent the contacts out a fraction and the motor spun freely. I also used the longer threaded bolts to retain the regulator while completing the extraction and re-assembly - so thanks for that hint.

Thank you! I'm glad I decided to just replace the motor rather than the whole regulator. I was a little worried about fitting the teeth of the motor to the teeth on the regulator but that ended up not being an issue at all, just lined up the bolts with the holes and screwed everything in and my window worked perfectly. This was my first time working on my car beyond some simple stuff and it was pretty easy thanks to this video

Was just informed by our Subaru service centre that we are up for AUD$1600 for the driver and driver side passenger window motors. Screw that! We found your video and have ordered both reconditioned motors for AUD$500. Will let you know how we go when they arrive. Great video; clear and to the point without glossing over how fiddly it can be or the potential pitfalls. Cheers.

Wow, great video. Made my project easier than I thought it could be. Key for me was the mention of needing a #3 Phillips, I had a long one on a socket so the socket was useless but I used a small vise grip on it and easy-peasy after that! Thanks!

Wow, thanks for this. The motor went out on our 2003 Subaru, and your video saved me hundreds of dollars in repair bills. I just ordered a $60 motor (Dorman Inc. in U.S.) from Amazon, and was able to get it in without too much fuss. It helped me to use a small mirror to see the location of the motor screws. Also, I ended up having to loosen the top 2 regulator bolts and taking off the bottom two (just like you did in the vid) in order to get the motor pinion gear out from underneath the regulator housing. I used some wire to tie up the regulator from the top, instead of a wood prop from the bottom. Thanks again for the instructions!

Motor was out yesterday and I opened it up for a regreasing. Back together and before installing, checked it out as to if it would run. Thanks for the tips, made the job understandable and with the correct (#3) Phillips it worked out. Short armed ratchet helped also. Subaru book by Chilton had dark pictures, suggested taking the whole window out, but added something that wasn't possible if the motor wasn't working to make the window come all the way down. (One last screw to be taken out). Lock Tite was just a bit difficult but finally gave up. You did a great job with your first video!

Damn man, thanks a lot, I hate breking my fingers inside the car doors, and I would defentley broken them if I had to figure things out for myself! Bought a chineese window motor, they sent me the wrong sided one and the fixture holes ware in a too tight radius....so I opened up the old motor's electrical compartment, it was all siezed up and rusty. Poured some WD40 on the rotor and stator, brushed it, and it works again!

Thanks so much for this. I had always thought this method ought to be possible and your video helped a lot. Motor alone costs about half the price of entire regulator and swap is much quicker. Three tips - ensure you have a perfect phillips no 3 screwdriver bit - if in doubt get a new one as the last thing you want is to burr the screwheads that hold in the motor. I used four lengths of coat-hanger wire to ensure the window could not drop - simply make a hook on one end and put it down the inside of the glass until it hooks under the glass holder - then bend it over the inside top lip of the door - four times to be certain there is support all the way along. Finally use two or three strips of masking tape to hold up the plastic damp membrane out of the way - it keeps flapping down in your video which is annoying and messy! thanks again

Good video !!! Gave me the confidence to tackle the issue myself. Socket drive is a Phillips #3 ( P3 ) It bottoms out at the bottom of the machine screw well so get best fit. I used the idea of a shaving mirror and an LED light. Shaving mirror on rags at the bottom of the door and the LED light at the front of the door. It would be great to know what the bolt size is that holds the regulator in place (m8?) I got by removing the bottom two and losening the top two but would have preferred to use some longer ones. I did have some "fun" getting one of the mounting screws loosened. WD40 and a couple smaks freed it. Although my motor was still sort of working, it would not have for long. I took it apart and don't really know how it worked at all. Your video is worth a watch !!

This can't be too much different than the 2006 Forester - just wondering how the spring mechanism matches up to the motor. Three hours on a Subaru vs one for a normal change of motor and/or regulator. Great job and I'm especially grateful that you mentioned what tools are needed in advance. Thank you.

Alan Shrimpton pretty much exactly what I did initially... checked all the various spots for power, trying to rule out switches and cables and so on. Eventually determined the same - the motor was getting power but when I got it out the insides of the motor were so gummed up it was no surprise it wasn't working well. In hindsight, and so my advice to you, if you get yours out and find the same just install a new (or reconditioned one) straight away (would avoid breakers' since they'll probably have same issue). Good luck.

Just thought I'd add a comment now I have the motor out. After undoing the 3 screws that hold the motor in, the tension of the window in the full up position was locking it in hard and I couldn't get it out. I plugged the controls back in and all the movement got it working enough to loosen the tension, then the motor almost fell out! When I pulled to motor apart it was completely full with water and inside the motor is very badly corroded. Its a 2005 turbo JDM facelift model....it does rain a lot here in NZ though!

I've confirmed power to the motor but there is no sound or movement at all. I'd like to check the mechanism when the motor is removed before reassembly, and maybe lock it in the closed position for a few days until a replacement part arrives.

Would be worth taking the door card apart etc. to see what is possible. I don't think you'll be able to get at the motor because the glass will be blocking it but you may be able to loosen up some bits to get the glass to go back up. Good luck.
