Dean Martin was a true legend and a triple threat, he could sing, act and he was part of one the great comedy teams of all time with Jerry Lewis. He was truly one of the coolest guys to grace the airwaves.

I watched his show on Thursday nights when I was a teen. I'm an avid Elvis fan. But that didn't start for me until I had a dozen or so Dean LPs. You can tell the influence that Dean had on the singing voice of Elvis --especially in the 1950s doing ballads. I've read bios by two of his children. Pretty good stuff. Dean was the man that held the Rat Pack together --not Frank. I never cared much for Frank's voice. I like perhaps a dozen of his songs. But Dean?! Hundreds. He was as gifted in comedy as he was in singing. Jerry even admitted that Dean was funnier than him. To my knowledge Frank didn't record any song with some Italian in it. Dean was a first generation American. He didn't speak and English until first grade. Kids would make fun of his English troubles.

Dean Martin (1917-1995) was born Dino Paul Crocetti. Like my grandfather (1913-2007), he spoke only Italian until he went to school. He was my grandfather's favorite singer, and I remember how upset he was on Christmas Day in 1995 when he learned Dean Martin had died. Listening to Dino always brings back good memories of Grandpa.

@@stormtwo-spirits5662 Not a duo but the Marx Brothers. They started out doing classical musical performances under their mother's guidance but at a performance in Texas, Nacogdoches maybe, the audience started throwing things at them & booing them. Groucho got up and started telling them off. The audience laughed so hard every time he said something, the p'od brothers just trying to give a classical music performance finally just went outside in the street mad, but then it dawned on them they were comedians and that's when their true calling was born. I think they went back inside and gave the audience more tongue lashing. Their Mother wasn't happy about it at the time though. Now did I just make all that up? Embellish the story? Or am I dreamin?

She has an amazing story as well Her career began in 1942 and appeared in the 1945 original Broadway theatre production of the musical Carib Song. In the early 1950s, she had six US Top 30 entries, including "Uska Dara" and "I Want to Be Evil". Her other recordings include the UK Top 10 song "Under the Bridges of Paris" (1954), "Just an Old Fashioned Girl" (1956) and "Where Is My Man" (1983). Orson Welles once called her the "most exciting woman in the world".[2] She starred as Catwoman in the third and final season of the television series Batman in 1967.

  • @keithwarrington2430

How it didn't win is a mystery to me, The song was the first by Mudugno to win the San Remo Music festival before being entered into the Eurovision. He won th San Remo three times. In my opinion Dino spoils the song by starting with the chorus rather than the first verse which ends on a suspended 7th or similar chord , meaning everything leads up the the crescendo of one of popular music's greatest sing-along choruses no matter what language you speak.. Martin ( who's singing I love as a rule ) puts this in as a bridge almost halfway through the song but the natural progression is lost compared to the original. So Many songs and films have been ruined on the grounds that American audiences wouldn't go for three verses in italian or french or the hero being English or Mexican etc. why do American media producers have such a low opinion of their citizens' cultural capacity?

Not only was Dean Martin an absolute crooner, he was an original member of the Rat Pack, with Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr. and Joey Bishop. He made some killer movies from the late 40s to the early 70s, and hosted the Dean Martin Celebrity Roasts. He was a national treasure of talent. Oh, and his comedy with Jerry Lewis is worth checking out too!

For a few years I had to drive down to Tampa, from Orlando, and pick up my grandmother to bring her from my aunt's to my mom's place. One time I brought my Dean Martin greatest hits CD for the drive. After 3 Dean songs in a row she asked, "What station is this" and when I told her it was a Dean Martin CD she couldn't believe I would buy that. I laughed and told her he was an all-time favorite! Who doesn't love Dean?

One of Deans best songs! It is Italian. "Nel blu, dipinto di blu" means "In the blue, painted blue." Here's a short snippet so you can understand what its about. Flying, oh, oh! Singing, oh, oh, oh, oh! In the blue painted blue. Happy to be up there. And I flew, I flew happily to the heights of the sun. As the world slowly disappeared out there, A soft music was playing just for me. And I was flying, was flying happily higher than the sun and still higher, While the world slowly, slowly was disappearing far away down there, a sweet music was playing just for me. I think, that dream does not come back ever again. I painted my face and hands blue. Then suddenly I was being kidnapped by the wind. And I began to fly in the endless sky. (translated by a site, btw)

So much so that when he passed away on Christmas morning 1995 I have several friends (some who I hadn't seen since high school leaving condolence messages on my answering machine. I had the good fortune to see him perform live in Vegas. Also saw Sinatra live at the Universal Amphitheater in LA in 1984. Some other songs to check out by Dino are "You're Nobody Til Somebody Loves you? " "Ain't that a Kick in the head" The slow version of "Everybody Loves Somebody Sometime" "Evening in Roma" "Sway" "I wish you Love" "Cha Cha Cha De"Amour" "Your Other Love" "Cry Like a Baby"... okay I have to to stop now. But there are many more songs.

This is awesome! Dean Martin's version is great. May I recommend the original 1958 version of "Volare" which was #1 in the US but returned to #1 again after falling from #1. It's performed in Italian by Domenico Modugno. He was not only the singer but also one of the Lyricist of the song. Its proper Italian title is "Nel Blu , depinto de blu( Volare) and its by Domenico Modugno from 1958. Peace and Love ❤☺😁

Dean Martin exudes sexiness without even trying. When he sings he sings with a smile in his voice and he sounds so carefree. He never took himself seriously. He was big on being a family man at home in the evenings. He didn't hang out with his Rat Pack buddies drinking all night; he went home or to his room to watch tv. I AM SO HAPPY THAT YOU GOT BACK TO DEAN. I have been asking and asking. He did many songs in Italian and was very popular in Italy. His real name was Dino Paul Crocetti. Born in 1917 in Steubenville, Ohio and only spoke Italian until the age of 5. He had many odd jobs working in a steel mill, gas station, casino as a croupier/dealer. He went to Hollywood and met up with comedian, Jerry Lewis. They became a tea m; Dean the handsome singer/ straight man to Jerry's goofy, awkward, funny looking comedy guy. They made several movies together and were very successful for 11 yrs. Then they split. Jerry went on to make more movies and Dean did a fair share of successful movies too. But Dean had his biggest success with his singing style.....so relaxed and smooth. He was called The King of Cool. Here are some of Deans best songs: Everybody Loves Somebody Sometime ( live video from London concert), Sway, Return To Me, Memories Are Made of This, Send Me The Pillow That You Dream On, You're Nobody Til Somebidy Loves You. I suggest the Western Movie Rio Bravo with Dean and John Wayne and Ricky Nelso. There is a part in the Movie when Dean and Ricky sing a duet...My Horse My Pony and Me. It's a classic Western. Ricky Nelson was a teen idol back in the 50's and 60's and had his own singing career: Lonesome Town, Hello Mary Lou, ( Goodbye Heart) Dean had his own show On tv for several years. Check out Dean singing with The Mills Brothers: Paper Doll and Up a Lazy River. The Mills Bros. got their style from Bing Crosby and Dean formulated his style from Bing and the Mills Bros. Then I recommend that you listen to the Mills Bros. sing "Basin Street Blues" (live video with the Boston Pop 's orchestra). It has a surprise in the song). You can't go wrong with any of the suggestions I have made. I hope you are reading the comments on here. Volare is one of the songs I'd been asking for along with the others I've listed above. Don't take so long to get back to Dean please.

This is an English translation of an Italian pop song called Nel Blu, Dipinto Di Blu released in February 1958 by Domenico Modugno. This version holds the record for the biggest jump on the Billboard Hot 100. It debuted on August 4, 1958 at number 54 and hit number one just two weeks later. It was at number two within the first week. It was so popular that Chrysler named one of their 1970s Plymouth models after it.

In the Fifties, he was the straight man in a hugely popular comedy duo with Jerry Lewis, and at that time Lewis was considered by many (wrongly) to be the real talent. Dean's smooth and debonair appearance, always coming across as your best friend on his TV show, makes for a beautiful record. He always had a drink and a cigarette on his TV show, which was usually apple juice, giving you the idea he was slightly lit. He choose apple juice because it looked like boubon. Dean is so good. He's a legend during the crooner era. Song suggestion: Al Martino--Spanish Eyes (1967). He's another crooner to check out.

This is based on an Italian song recorded by Italian singer-songwriter Domenico Modugno. The original is completely in Italian and it is considered a classic! It also won at the 1st Annual Grammy Awards, with Modugno's recording the first ever Grammy winner for both Record of the Year and Song of the Year.

One of my all time favorites. You can just picture his smile as he sings. Always sounds like he's enjoying himself. Check out "SWAY"

Dean’s voice was like silk. Check out him singing Sway, then Michael Buble’s version of it.

Dino was part of The Rat Pack with Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis, Jr. His biggest hits were ‘Everybody Loves Somebody Sometime” and “You’re Nobody ‘Til Somebody Loves You.” Blessed with perfect pitch, Dean Martin played the drunk on stage, but word is he actually didn’t drink much at all. There are lots of frank/Dean/Sammy performances on KZread.

Dino Paul Crocetti aka Dean Martin born 1917 in Steubenville, Ohio. The King of Cool. Not only a great singer but a damn good actor and comedian too. There is another crooner that a lot of people have never heard of because he didn't have tons of hits. His name is Frank Ifield (pronounced eyefield) and his best known song is "I Remember You". Give him a listen, he has an amazing voice.

Dean Martin is Italian as well as Frank Sinatra, Vic Damone, Perry Como, and Tony Bennett. I grew up with Dean Martin and the others music in my home which is tied to sweet memories. I loved the Dean Martin Show that came on every week with his dancers, the Golddiggers.

I so remember the Dean Martin Show from the mid-to-late 60s. It was basically Dean doing comedy or singing with whatever guest he had. Both the guests and the songs were fantastic.

He had a television show in the 60s or 70s that was pretty funny. I have a huge painting of this guy in a burgundy velvet smoking jacket! It's packed away. Yes he is Italian.
