Students making history
At a time when educators may face restrictions on what they can teach, a contest sponsored by the non-profit organization National History Day offers students in grades 6-12 the opportunity to explore significant topics of history. Correspondent Faith Salie talks with some of the young people using writing, performance art and documentary filmmaking to tell stories of the past that resonate today, proving that history never gets old.

Exactly!
"History never gets old." That it is so true. Such a great story.
I earned a history degree in '96 and my love for the subject has only grown stronger with age. Great story Sunday Morning!
I’ve judged for regional History Day competitions, as part of NHD. It is so much fun and the students enjoy showing off their passions, research, and creativity.
So inspiring. Learn and talk about EVERYTHING.
I pursued a history degree for a couple of years, before earning a degree in English with a minor in Humanities just five years ago. Plus, was a historical writer for a state-wide public radio show. Many people feel that history is boring, and all about wars and treaties. When in fact, everything has a history: movies, TV shows, pop culture, music, clothing, cars, food, etc. When you think of how history or historical items apply to your life-- perhaps you enjoy Art Deco architecture, or love vintage clothing from the 1960's, or enjoy old movies from the 1940's--then it's easy to find history appealing and interesting. These intelligent history-loving students have proved just that!
My small county in western Massachusetts contributed the most members to the 10th mountain division during WWII, to any one unit they contributed 10 people from one town, all world class skiers, all award winners, some never made it home, I serve in the 10th mountain now. Neat little bit of history.

Awesome!
I am a retired Elementary schoolteacher who has had a passion for History ever since my 8th grade teacher, Mr. Wilson, made it fun and interesting! I really wish this event had been around in 1959...I would have been a participant. Kudos to all those who participated!! They are winners because they are better humans from their knowledge.
Thank you. I cried just to see these young students exhibit their love of learning.

Me too 😊 I’m a teacher and there is nothing better than that!
"Conservatives" want to limit your rights, and your knowledge.
So wonderful to see this enthusiasm about history. My dad was in the 10th Mountain Division so I was thrilled that Aesop’s presentation was recognized. I would love to go to this event!
Inspiring story!
I competed in this competition in the junior individuals. I didn’t want anything, but it’s OK little lesson: just have fun with it.
I love that! A reason why we should learn about a history is we don’t make exactly the same mistakes people made in the past though we have done it sadly. That’s why we keep learning about pain, tragedy and suffering in the past to make a better future.
There are still beautiful rays of hope out there, thank you CBS Sunday morning for continuing to bring them to us.
I love this!
3:42 limiting history is wild

Limiting history is a crime ,a big crime,it doesn’t do us any favors to ignore where we come from, so that we learn where we are going !

It's very disgusting and scary. It's like let teachers teach what they want. Granted there should be some guidance but come on.
History never gets old, when we know our history ignorant bullies are shut down,we learn from our mistakes and we then grow as humans to be kinder, understanding, not hateful which is what all deniers wants us to become, love this kids curiosity and ingenuity ,bravo !
Such a great program! Honored to have been a part of NHD in high school.
I wasn’t aware of this competition, but I’m already a fan of it! I’m a huge supporter of youth programs outside the typical 7-3:30 school day. Organizations like this and sports etc, all serve a critical role in development.
Thank you for keeping our history alive. Never forget.
I did NHD and did documentaries each year. It was a blast. We did history, including handling original sources like letters from President Hoover from the Boxer Rebellion, learned writing skills, get better at using technology and learned teamwork.
I competed in this competition with a documentary. Truly an amazing experience.
This is sooo awesome 🎉! I wish i knew about this 30 years ago 😢
I love history those students are brilliant
This is wonderful!!! Kudos to these kids!
Very interesting subject. I'm a history lover too
Way to go, Aesop!! 🏆 🎉
History has always been a passion of mine - early American, post Civil War, 20s to WWII and civil rights, the 60s and the disaster or Republicants

I would suggest you extend your interests beyond those to get a fulller picture.
You never miss 🔥
Way to go!
This is pure gold, real history not like wikipedia or youtubers, recently heard a KZreadr said that flath earth is a new thing that never existed in history of human kind 🙆♂ imagine 20 yrs later: "LGBTQ+ABCZ" exist since the Summerians and Egiptian civilizations 😂 (source Facebook & goowoo)
Given the increasing maga conservative political climate, this could be the last year American kids are able to do this. 😢

And because of that, THIS will be the saddest chapter of our history...

I really hope not. History is critically important.
Love this. Absolutely limited diversity.
Silly story.
