The origins of breaking, the newest Olympic sport

Breaking (or breakdancing), an acrobatic dance style with its roots in New York's hip hop culture, is making its Olympic debut in this year's Summer Games in Paris. Correspondent Luke Burbank talks with Victor Montalvo (a.k.a. B-Boy Victor), who will be competing for breaking gold; and with founding members of the b-boy group New York City Breakers, who came up with some of the sport's original moves in the Bronx back in the late 1970s and early '80s.

Breaking is created by Foundational Black Americans. There's an episode of Ed Sullivan show back in the 60's where Young Black dancers were breaking. Breaking goes back further than that. Trixie is the original B-Boy and he's still alive. Trixie is a Hip-Hop Pioneer and a key element in the culture. The New Documentary "Microphone Check" Covers all of this.

Breakdancing originally was african circle dancing which turned into capoeria in the 1700s.. then eventually evangelical dancing hence the movie "beatstreet" and the end "do you believe" they didnt want african featured with whites on tv in alot if areas back then so Puerto rican and the like often portrayed and claimed alot of moves which were invented hundreds of years ago like the windmill in angli african martial arts etc..

He's one of the most well known breakers from the 80's era! Fun fact: he recently revealed that he was the body double for Jennifer Beals during her dance audition in "Flashdance" when she does that spin on the floor. No slight to the other breakers they interviewed. I was just looking for Crazy Legs.🤷🏾‍♀️

He wasn't even a teenager yet but he had his moves down pat like a pro. He practiced every day on the concrete between out apartment buildings. It was so cool to watch.
