The origins of breaking, the newest Olympic sport
Breaking (or breakdancing), an acrobatic dance style with its roots in New York's hip hop culture, is making its Olympic debut in this year's Summer Games in Paris. Correspondent Luke Burbank talks with Victor Montalvo (a.k.a. B-Boy Victor), who will be competing for breaking gold; and with founding members of the b-boy group New York City Breakers, who came up with some of the sport's original moves in the Bronx back in the late 1970s and early '80s.

Where are the Black boys who were in dozens of videos in the 80's? Not all of them died
Breaking is created by Foundational Black Americans. There's an episode of Ed Sullivan show back in the 60's where Young Black dancers were breaking. Breaking goes back further than that. Trixie is the original B-Boy and he's still alive. Trixie is a Hip-Hop Pioneer and a key element in the culture. The New Documentary "Microphone Check" Covers all of this.

Also it's like saying NY is the only place that has Black breakdancers. This is the same dance they made fun of until white people started doing it.

Breakdancing originally was african circle dancing which turned into capoeria in the 1700s.. then eventually evangelical dancing hence the movie "beatstreet" and the end "do you believe" they didnt want african featured with whites on tv in alot if areas back then so Puerto rican and the like often portrayed and claimed alot of moves which were invented hundreds of years ago like the windmill in angli african martial arts etc..

I'll admit I was eye-rolling a bit when I first heard this was in the Olympics, but as a fitness instructor I can tell you you absolutely better be in top shape to not really hurt yourself doing this. Also, I'm sure there was eye-rolling when gymnastics was introduced. Let the kids do their thing.
Ok, as a self proclaimed B-Girl (lol) having grown up during the hype of break dancing, I was waiting & waiting for them to interview Crazy Legs. He's one of the most well known breakers from the 80's era! Fun fact: he recently revealed that he was the body double for Jennifer Beals during her dance audition in "Flashdance" when she does that spin on the floor. No slight to the other breakers they interviewed. I was just looking for Crazy Legs.🤷🏾♀️

I know what you mean, but they're focusing on those going to Paris, to show them support. They should have done Crazy Legs back when it was first announced that breaking would be adopted into the games. Also sounds like they stuck to Cali. Johnny Legs did a bit with him, though, the guy can still dance

I was an 80s teen. I remember living in Hollywood around '82 - '83 and as soon as I heard the album Thriller start playing I knew that the kid next door was out there breakdancing to it. He wasn't even a teenager yet but he had his moves down pat like a pro. He practiced every day on the concrete between out apartment buildings. It was so cool to watch.
Get that gold, Victor Montalvo!
Maybe you guys should go look back at history books, or even your own vintage news footage to see who ACTUALLY made it.
Well if they can have rhythmic gymnastics where the competitors throw a ball in the and wave a stick with a streamer; why not have this?

@@DeannaAllbrittin I remember I used to get so excited for the Olympics. I just can’t care anymore. With age I think that I realized winning an event is just having the luck of being at your peak whenever the games are held. Of those games were held two years earlier or two years later, there would be different winners. Look at all the great marathoners in 1982. By the time the games were held in 1984, they were all past their peak and some guy we never heard of won. And then there is the fact that the International Olympic Committee is basically a bunch of criminals.

Modern break dancing was created by NYC blacks in the mid 70's, not by these guys.
Having the “origins” title in the video and then purposefully leaving out mentioning Black Americans for the creation of breakdancing is a “diss”-disingenuous and more disinformation. 🙄
