He definitely could have played at RB for the group games and against Slovakia. For a team that relies so much on set pieces and wasted most of them, aside from Walker's long throw, he was missed. My only worry is as we play the better teams now, Trent's defensive ability will come more into question.

@mickbanner I don't think Southgate will change a thing, but my preference would be Trent at right back and Gomez on the left. We need a decent left back, whatever happens, most likely anyway, and Gomez did a good job at Liverpool there. Of course, like everyone else would like to see Gordon at left wing, and Bellingham at 8 with Foden at 10 but I think that is wishful thinking.

Yep, the Switzerland game will be rinse and repeat by Southgate. The problem is the opposition is better, I can see the Swiss scoring one or two before Southgate realises he needs to make substitutions to change the game. Going by the timing of his substitutions it will be too late and the ship will have sailed. I see England going home after Saturday based on the performance of both teams so far.

Solid defender, pace to burn and great in the air but similar to Shaw he's not naturally left footed so can't see him playing. Tripp hasn't really done much wrong considering he's a RB playing on the left. Southgate will go with the option which is least disruptive. Hence, it will be Tripp, stones, konsa and Walker.

England should match them up and play three at the back. Walker Stones Konsa. Trent right wing back with Saka on the left. Mainoo and Rice in midfield with Bellingham just in front, playing behind Kane and Palmer. Basically a 3 5 2 or 3 4 3. Should help them get the ball into midfield easier, simply by bringing the wide players further back and being available for a shorter pass, as the back line clearly lack the bravery and trust to play the ball into the midfielders feet, and then when they do the midfield are afraid to get on the half turn as they lack options when they do take a risk. 5/6 in midfield should help this.

For once England have a lot of technical players, but are stuck with a manager who learned his tactics in the 90s. Southgate literally doesn’t know what to do with them so he just picks who he thinks are the best individuals and hopes for the best. Almost wish he would just play 4-4-2 with true wingers and Toney up front with Kane, and just hammer teams with crosses and direct play. At least that would be a clear pattern of play.

This is a very strange situation. I've been following England since Bryan Robson scored 27 seconds into the first group match against a superb France in España 82. It seems almost as though Southgate's plan is to see the match out from the opening whistle and that he then expects a Kane or Bellingham goal or two to win it. It's so dull and maddening. Imagine being an England player on the bench and having to sit through it. But they're through to the quarterfinal against Switzerland with a mediocre Netherlands or Turkey (Portugal without the talent) awaiting in the semifinals. It's all so unfortunate. But I'd like to see England make us all suffer all the way to the final. There is so much anguish in the world anyway. Why not this?

This is absolute tripe. Mainoo is not a 6. He’s not supposed to be there to allow Rice to go forward. He’s an all round midfielder and is far more creative than Rice will ever be. Rice is great at breaking down play and making simple passes. He can do that really well, high up the pitch. He’s very effective and if he plays the 8 needs a proper 6 behind him. Fine, but unless Wharton is a genuine 6 then we have to play Rice in the deepest midfield role!! He’s surely the best at that in the squad. Mainoo has more creativity and skill in his left nutsack than Rice will ever have . He’s still a good player but every time he tried to do something clever the other night he got it wrong. Unlucky with that great effort against the post but Mainoo is an 8 ! I think you’re getting his role wrong if you are saying he only did alright. IMO!

Bad faith by Mr Pearce. KWalker has been having a mare of a tournament in possession, so the only thing he really brings to the table is his pace and defensive recovery. He is the ideal candidate to move across to LB. TAA should be the guy to come to RB and overlap and light up the right side in the right way. It's sickening watching Walker play simple 20 yard passes out of the pitch

Not the worst idea, Trent is two footed so would do better than Trippier going forward but would prefer to see a 3-5-2 with Konza, Stones, Walker, Eze or Saka on the left, Rice, Mainoo or Warton, Bellingham, Trent on the right, Foden or Palmer and Kane.

England should play a back 3. Trent as a right wing back, suits his game perfectly. Gomez could be left wing back, or Saka (despite him saying he doesnt want it.... you're lucky to play for your country and should be grateful to play wherever) then Rice Holding, Foden and Bellingham central but attacking) then why not try Kane AND Watkins or Toney?

Do people not get it Trent’s worst asset is positional he doesn’t know where to be and when to be there even at right back so don’t play him in any other position other than right back. He’s a fantastic player on the ball and can cross like the best of them. He’s was born in the wrong generation would have been right wing in a 442 but the way the game is now right back is his position.

Declan rarely plays the ball forward. Sideways and back will give you a high pass rate. To pick up the ball from the defenders and play forward, you need to be brave and take on players. He doesn’t have the skill to do this. Solid yes, but no technical skill.

I can't understand how Stuart thinks Foden is playing well better than Bellingham. If Southgate doesn't think Foden is better than Saka on the right and not better than Bellingham in the 10. Then what's the use of him? Better to try Palmer on the left or use Gordon that gives us balance on the left and stretches the defence to give Saka more space on the other side as Spain have. To me Foden is the week link on the left.

Granted he’s no Virgil however he has been training everyday and learning off Virgil for the past 7 plus years. Experienced and capable in defence. Pearce.. think you're wrong on Walker there. Look at the heat map for each player - he is literally the *only* one pushing wide and high. Saka, Foden both come in too much - making us narrow and give Kane nothing. We're essentially playing with x3 no.10s! I was a Southgate supporter... but I'm done. He refuses to fix glaring issues because of his stupid pride

  • @achern141

I think it’s important to identify who’s actually under performing because of their own deficiencies and who’s become a victim to Southgate’s inept management. For example, Kyle Walker and Harry Kane have been really poor and I think that’s down to them. But players like Foden, Rice and Bellingham - I think they have been poor because of the imbalance of the team around them. Too many “similar” players on the pitch and others being played out of position. When you’re in the middle of the park you need people to run and make space in order to get the ball forward and they haven’t had that. Put Gomez at LB, TAA at RB, put Mainoo at CDM and allow Rice to become more box to box, ONLY play one of Bellingham or Foden in the 10 and put Gordon on at LW. Then the rest can stay the same and if Saka and Kane underperform you have Palmer and Watkins/Toney to come on. Is this really so hard for Fraudgate?
