How were the SRBs able to maneuver like that? Were they trying to self correct? Did they even have that capabilty? Why did they not just spin out of control immediately? Or is it all just luck that they kept ascending more or less straight up? 🤔

The Srbs were front heavy so they were aerodynamically "Stable" By stable I don't mean like a plane stable, but stable enough to not do loops and turn around If your curious look up center of mass and pressure or "Plane CG"

They did have thrust vectoring, and in a weird way, it doomed the shuttle. The o-ring hole was sealed by combustion products that solidified almost immediately on lift off, which is why everything seemed fine for awhile. As the shuttle hit the jet stream the solid boosters had to vector to keep the shuttle on course, which caused the boosters to flex and break the seal, exposing the leak again which acted like a torch to the external tank.

"There's no chutes on the orbiter" What about the landing drag chute? 🤔

It wouldn’t have saved them. They were going down with the ship

Second, the drag chute wasn't installed until STS-49.

I was looking to see the puff of black smoke that shows the O-ring failed. However I didn't see it
