PLEASE Brittany, look up what happens to people when their lungs get clogged up with silica dust. That's what is being thrown into the air when stone, concrete and other masonry products are cut with drills and saws. Drew hasn't had respiratory PPE on for this project and I think we all want you both to be healthy and with us for a long long time.

Everybody is aware that dust in your lungs is not the best, but he's not doing this on a daily basis. Besides, you breathe dust all the time, you're just not aware of it.

@@janosszabo98 I don't know where you live but I do not breathe in any kind of dust on a daily basis that has silica, cement, and the like. Somebody cautioning them is done for concern. You assume that both Drew and Bethany are aware of all the risks. Even intelligent folks don't know everything about how to do this kind of work. There are many risks they've taken so far that they are, from what is shown, unaware. Better someone comments from concern than needless defense of Drew's choices.

People make the mistake of not wearing a mask because they are outside doing the job, but you still breath it in. Protect your lungs!! ❤

Small tip from a Waterguy, Add as much dirt against the tanks as you can to keep the water cool and...warm in the winter. It would be the best to place them under the eart completely. It will make sure the quality of the water remains better. Oh and start using dustmasks when drilling!!

Rather than a mural on the tanks that may not age well, I'd suggest making the tanks mimic what the tower/turret on the house looks like. This will age better and will look like part of the house compound.

Some suggestions from someone who has done this many times over the last 50 or so years: 1: Put the outlet a least 50 mm above the tank floor level so the sediment in the bottom of the tank doesn't go into the outlet. If you then get sediment in your water you know it's time to clean the tank. 2: Drill the hole about 10-15 mm bigger than the OD of the pipe and use a 2 to 1 mortar mix to fill around it (make sure you pack it all the way through). I'd also suggest to use brass fittings as they will last a lot longer, I usually use brass all thread to go into the tank (the external threads also give you a good mechanical bond with the mortar). 3: Put the inlet so you can reach it from the manhole in the top of the tank, and use a ballcock (float valve) with a pressure switch on the pump (ie. when the tank is full it shuts off and the pressure increase in the pipe shuts off the pump). 4: Put an overflow hole in at the top of the tank and screen it (ie. some flywire) to keep the wildlife out for any pumping mishaps. This should keep you trouble free for decades.

Sorry, this has been “one of those” projects. I’m in the process of downsizing 50+ years of accumulated junk along with family heirlooms that my Dad gave to me to sort out. He had been to overwhelmed by the task and now I understand why. In addition, I’m preparing my house for sale. I started off each day thinking, this project/task today is doable in X amount of time. I am then surprised how long it actually takes and/or some unknown challenge occurs. Thank you for the reminder that this is a part of life and what it takes sometimes to get to the good stuff. This past week was I was tossed a big unexpected challenge and this video was a good reminder that this happens to us all. So, thank you! This week, I am going to channel “Drew energy” and carry on with a smile. It might take time to get the task at hand completed, but we both have a new solutions to explore. We’ve got this!

You forgot to drill 2 holes in the top of each tank to have as fill holes and overflow. As mentioned, stay away from the bottom to prevent dirt and sand to enter your lines. Might be able to solve it with installing a filter on the outside so you won't get any in your lines.

stay 6 inches up to prevent sludge in years to come. Also on line there will be a reinforcement drawing from the manufacturer, that will help avoid the steel reinforcement. Link the tanks. Drill from the outside. Water on the drill bit to prevent damage and set the speed to the core bit. That should be a 10-minute hole.

Watching your initial sped-up footage with the trees swaying in the background really demonstrated the fire risk in your area - that canyon is a tinderbox! Those water tanks may not even be enough! But at least now, you can wet the mill's roof when the fires come. Lots of hard work pays off.

The Plummer tape has to go the same clockwise direction as the connection. If you do it the opposite direction it won’t be tightened but turned loose when you screw the connection on😮

** Drew Don't use Teflon tape on pvc pipes. It makes the threads strip out easy and can cause other problems. Teflon is made for metal pipes only.

Put the plumbers tape on Clockwise, that way when you thread the fitting on it tightens the tape rather than unravel it.

In regards to your water tanks, I would put a wide wooden walkway between the 2 tanks at the top. Perhaps with a railing at the opposite side from the hill. Then you can have have a semi-permanent ladder on the hill side to get up on top of the tanks. Having the semi-permanent ladder on the hill side will hide it a some what from the road. Then you can paint the wooden walkway and railing a shade of brownish green to help make it blend in. (Of course, without serious effort, it won't blend in. But, a little effort makes the tanks less industrial and more residential. Perhaps you can look at a tripod setup with a rope & board ladder for getting in and out of the tanks. Naturally never go into a tank with out one of you outside to act as "safety officer" :-). Even if it is something as silly as, "please hand me another of something"... Good luck, have fun, and play with the cats!

We had concrete tanks on our farm and we had the holes drilled from the outside, no one climbed down inside them to do it. I don’t understand why you didn’t do it the same way. It is certainly much safer to do it from the outside. We were able to put a hose down inside to wash out the tank afterwards. We connected the roof gutters to our tanks to catch all the rain water. 😊😊😊

You could dress the tanks with broken stone pieces and make it look like they are build with it. And it would match your terrace and the the retailning walls

Drew, you should have assembled the plumbing before gluing it in the holes, So you wouldn't be putting pressure on glue by tightening your plumbing

By all that's holy, I cannot understand why TWO holes are needed at the bottom of the tanks. My stupid head just cannot comprehend such difficult computation. One hole and you can make 20 different connections, input-output-cross tank, all with valves. Also, I would use a flared pipe (easy DIY with some heat) put from inside, so it's impossible to pull outwards, silicon or not, one day it's gonna fail, maybe a decade or two later, but always at the worse possible time, guaranteed.

Glad to see you switched to a concrete drill bit. Early in the video I wrote (but later deleted) about how a bi-metal saw wouldn't work very well in concrete. One other thing tho' - on the one pipe where you showed applying the plumbers (teflon sealing) tape - you appeared to have wound it the wrong way. It should always be wound the same direction and the fitting will be screwed on. (ie usually clockwise 6 or 7 times). In doing so, you might be OK as connections made 'your' way don't always leak, but the chances are greater when the tape is wound packwards. I'd recommend a pipe joint sealing compound, aka 'pipe dope' instead when joining threaded PVC or both is OK. (Good Luck).

Geeze! Your plans for the water tanks are brilliant, but that concrete is tough! It is hard work, but I'm glad that you've got your dad for advice and you are taking some time off to enjoy life too! Just a reminder to wear sun block and a hat while working! I noticed that Drew looked a little sunburnt!

You know about a product called Big Red, it's a liquid rubber used mostly as a membrane for showers before you lay tile. And I'll bet if you can find some, it'll seal your concrete. And then all you need is a three way filter for your house to make sure every drop is clean as it can be. Even what you think will be an easy plumbing job can end up testing you to a limit… looking great!!

In Australia I use Portuguese product Drizoro white with latex to food grade water proof = line my concrete tanks. They are easier to clean over time during maintenance. And Drizoro Plug to fill/plug fittings and sisal fibre + paste to join fittings.

When you drill into concrete or tile you should always spray your drill bit with water.😮😮

I hope you are planning to add water lines, ( from you thanks) a few inches higher up. The lower ones are great for draining and cleaning, but will keep the debris flooring into your water feed.

You should ask one of your many friends who's an artist to draw a caricature of you and Britney in the shape of two water tanks and paint them on your tanks so people will see the pare of you when they first come down your drive.

Most plumbers I've talked to say five circles on plumbers tape is what it takes to get the best seal.

Wrapped your Teflon tape backwards. When facing the end of the pipe, wrap clockwise. You always want the threads to pull the tape tighter...in the direction you wrapped.

I would be afraid to hit my chin with my knees with this kind of bike. But in the US grown ups are used to ride on childrens bikes. I like the frame of my bikes a lot taller so I can reach the peddles with almost streched legs. You can use so much more force that way.

Ladder hint - if you're not going to use the extension, you can remove it so that you actually have 2 ladders and when you're going down the 'manhole', you'll have more clearance for your body. Also, when you're putting on the plumbers tape, make sure you wrap it in the direction of the threads.

How cool!

I don't understand why you're not putting an inlet pipe at the top on the side . With a float and shutoff valve inside the water tank. So it lets water in and shuts off when it's full on its own. For when you connect to your borehole. So you don't have to keep climbing up and down to refill it . You could also fit a glass tube on the outside to see if it's full . Like they do on some water / fuel tanks . 😊😊 Nice job

cover all the outdiameter tank with 10cms thik eucaliptus poles from your land ,,, to secure them around u can use a sort of a belt made with a thin metal wire taht u can twist as u aply each pole... that way is cheap ... its kindof natural and also creates an insulation to mantain low water temperature and not to develop algies ,,, take care

Confined space entry is a killer you should have forced air in place plus a rescue system

If the water tanks are the first thing you see, could you plant a tree in front to screen them. Willow grows fast and in a few years will hide the tanks. Alternatively plant a fast growing climber that clings without needing supports. It would also help insulate the tanks. Something like Virginia creeper (Boston Ivy), non damaging to masonry.

watch out for the teflon tape, you have to put it the same way you screw. And put enough. Good job guys.

We use a filter on the outlet pipe of our tanks and clean them frequently. Also with the water from the borehole some very fine sand is always coming. Good luck!

Wrap the teflon tape in the direction you are winding the fittings. Complete 6 -8 wraps. Add plumbing adhesive over the tape. Wait to set as per manufacturer's guidelines. See if the local hardware have plumbing adhesive "Goop". Some joints can be sealed and cured ahead of time. Good luck.

Hey guys. Great Channel. Little info. You put the white tape clockwise. That’s wrong > It’s counterclockwise !!

When there is a small pudle of water in a tank micro organisms can create H2S. In my neighberhood in Belgium 3 people died with exactly the same tank as yours. 2cm of water in it. Never enter a closed space without atmosphere controle.

Should always ventilate those tanks thoroughly before entering a confined space no telling what dangerous gases are present.

Horse hair???? Here in Northern Europe we use flax fibers, wrap a nice amount on the threads and screw on the valve/tap of choice. When flax gets wet it expands and closes the leakage on the treads

Aw man - what a big job! Fingers crossed you get it figured out!!!

I would have made a new holes in the tanks for the water outlets, ca. 20 cm or so up from the bottom of the tanks, maybe a bit more too. Otherwise you will always tap water from the residue filled water at the bottom of the tanks, and the pipes can eventually clog up too. In an off-grid cabin where you have one of those big pots on the wood stove to heat the water in, with a spigot on it, the spigot is located a few cm up from the bottom. And when I made a water container from a see-through plastic box with a lid on it and a spigot to hang over the sink, I did the same, and the little tank always collects some residue at the bottom, but it stays there since the spigot is a few cm from the bottom.

If you continue to have weeping or problem with the tank pipes use resin to fix them nice and tight , pipes will require a key by sanding and the concrete will require a light coat to prime 👍

Wow! It would be easier to buy a PVC tanks. There are in market PVC tanks with 10,000 liters or more. I have in my brazilian property only one PVC tank with capacity of 15,000 liters (530 cubic feet) since 1990. They are stronger and durable. And cheaper.

Drew, I don't see a filler hole, how do you plan to fill them ? I would drill and fit an inlet hole close to the top of one tank and then another pair of holes and pipework to link the two tanks a few inches under the level of the inlet hole. This way there is no added return weight for the pump to overcome. the first tank will fill and then to through the pipe into the 2nd tank. If you have a total tap failure on one tank, the other will still hold the water so saving nearly half of your supply If you intend to use one of those lower holes to fill them, your pump will have the full weight of the water in the tank to work against - 1 litre of water weighs 1Kg, so if those tanks hold 2000 litres, that will be 4000Kg of weight that your pump is working against - and will quickly wear out the pump, and if the pump does fail, you will have all that water heading back down the fill pipe 🌊🌊

Great achievements. There will be water for your needs!

CO2 is the biggest danger when in the bottom of one of those tanks. Keep a fan circulating air into the tank. Ideally, the air should be directed all the way to the bottom.

Once the tanks are filled it would be a good idea to test the Ph of the water. To high either way will have an effect on the uptake of nutrients to plants using the water. A neutral pH of + or - 7 is ideal but there is leeway both ways. There may be a bit of leeching from the tank walls but should not be serious over the long term.
