Strolling through the summer garden 🌿 July 7, 2024

There's good news and bad news in the garden: Some things are looking great, a few spots are looking wretched, and a lot is looking rough following a full-on deer assault.

Easy come easy go right?!?! That’s why gardening is so good - so expansive- for the heart and soul. Don’t get too attached, the deer may eat that plant overnight! And just the day to day changes, some good some not as good help us practice not being too attached. Love your garden and your attitude Erin!!!! Thanks for sharing All of it!!!

I have deer attacking my plants regularly, and I spray! I had to put two pot trellises in front of my container tomato plant so that the dang deer would not eat the foliage and the flowers. No flowers no tomatoes. So frustrating!

Love these garden strolls! Best start to my Sunday. I have implemented them daily with my little one... touching the different stages of plants/flowers, enjoying the bees/butterflies, and experiencing so much. His new favorite word is "whoa," and I hear a lot of that on the daily strolls. And! Has really helped me keep track of what is going on. Taking a few minutes every day, even with some weeds 🙃, I have really been enjoying taking a moment to experience how far my garden has come. Thank you for the inspiration 😊

Hi Erin! Lovely stroll, once again, very pleasant, chilled out walk around your garden. The view of the driveway garden with the golden hour sunlight glowing through the trees.. simply stunning. Also, the view of the Roy’s garden with the sun-drenched clearing of grass and the veg garden behind it.. what a treat. Thank you ☺️ I really enjoyed watching the changes you’ve made recently with new plant additions. I would also like the tour of all the planters in 2 weeks time 😊 Happy gardening!

I so understand how difficult it is to get out to spray deer repellent with constant rain. We have had rain almost daily too-often several times during the day and evening. It rained around 5 pm yesterday. I went out around 8:30 pm and was surprised most plants were dry. I got out the deer repellent and sprayed. I know you are not supposed to spray when plants are still wet but I have done it this year as I have a garden tour July 13th. It can’t come soon enough. I have often felt this year that I take one step forward and then two steps backwards as we have had many-seems more than usual-storms, critters, bugs, wind and rain. Awe the garden life!

I am sure we all can relate to walking around the garden and saying to ourselves, a half hour of weeding would sure improve this area. We have also been getting a lot of rain here in the Hudson Valley. The plants are loving it but so are the weeds. Actually, the weather is probably saving the forests here because many trees were nearly defoliated by a plague of gypsy moths and they need the moisture to put on new leaves. Thanks so much for these tour videos -- you always inspire some new ideas. Can you tell us where you are sourcing the nepeta subsessilis?

Anyway, your stroll gave me some idea of what shape to look for. Theyre so darn pretty in any garden border. You're so right about the golden hour, when the sun shines through the undergrowth and picks up the astilbes in the distance and all the many textures and hues of green and yellow...a very special meditative time to take in all that you have done to make it your own. The deer consider your garden their favorite on their “restaurant “ tour…they were obviously hungry 😁…frustrating for you, but some creatures are grateful 🤦‍♀️. I sat in my favorite garden spot last night, a slider bench, with my wine. From that spot I can see most of the garden beds, after a few months of work it is so satisfying and fun to see the results. We’re finally really warm, June was windy and cool….so my veggies are really popping. Last year i think I had only a couple zucchini’s…but the plants have several already, so very happy…and planted cucumbers this year, already cucs on the plants…grandkids took baby cucs and zucchini after the fireworks, they were so excited….like their interest that i grow plants that produce food….I planted every tomato, cucumber, and zucchini that survived….so many veggies to harvest soon! Thank you for your tour, love seeing your results…. (Btw-I’m in zone 7A-Boise, Idaho)

Oh wow, I just walked through Dow gardens this afternoon. I have a season pass, it’s beautiful. A little further away is Frederick Meijer gardens in Grand Rapids Michigan, and it’s even more beautiful

Looks so nice. I to love the Lacecap hydrangeas. I know about deer…. Yesterday my neighbour took a few pics of a lone deer 🦌. He munched on my Annabelle and one of my limelight. I would be very ticked, but the poor thing had two horns that were scary. I wish I could send you a pic. I felt bad for him 😱🦌🌿

I averted my eyes….😂 Thanks for being so honest about the plants that work and those that don’t. I love trying new types of plants and seeing someone else’s garden with wins and loses spurs me to continue trying-especially since we have basically the same climate (Manitowoc). My asiatic and oriental lilies have never been taller than this year, either!

My Haas Halo is tiny and hasn’t added any growth at all. I’d think it were dead except that it’s still green.

Our deer are truly demented, because they chose to mow down the rhubarb leaves!

How have your lilies not been eaten? I had lilies and the deer and rabbits have mowed them to the ground. Your garden is lovely.

Have you tried Germander (Teucrium Chamaedris) in place of the chives in your knot garden? It is a hardy woody plant that grows to maybe 18 inches, is evergreen, and can be trimmed like boxwood? Outsidepride has seeds.

"A big ole BOY rabbit" ROFL!! Not a cute one, I'm sorry. Damned wabbits! You had me chuckling throughout on this stroll. Thanks. 😭 Sorry about the deer, aka oversized rodents.

I deal with rabbits in the way you deal with deer. Daily battle of spraying, throwing out granules. What drives me nuts is they live at my neighbors- run off under their fence when I come out. I have dogs so they leave backyard alone but destroy the front. Have munched down lawn in patches to about .5” so it’s burning. They ate all my hostas. I have alliums and chives planted and other rabbit proof plants but they seek out what they love. Thinking of trying the ultrasound deterrents.
