STRIPPING THE ENGINE ON MY VW GOLF MK5 GTI PT.2!!
In today's video we will be further stripping the engine of the MK5 Volkswagen Gti and determining wether the engine is salvageable or not. Also we strip the turbo down!

Leave the block in, you're creating extra work, however I would be tempted to crack one of the big end caps off to check that they haven't started to pick up due to oil starvation

Yup
I'm so pumped about this build! My BPY has 225,000 on it and many new parts. Love seeing someone else take them apart.
I recently totally rebuilt my Audi A3 2.0t engine and I'd recommend removing the engine/trans as a unit. In the end, you will more than make up the time it takes (and it doesn't take long to pull the front end anyway), plus you'll have such a better rebuild. I also replaced my turbo core - there are many available new online at reasonable prices. Also, with engine out, I'd very closely look at oil pump and balance shaft assembly - my balance shaft had seized. There are kits out there to basically disconnect balance shaft and most who have done that say they notice virtually no additional vibration from the engine. It is a failure point in this engine which, if it seizes, will wreck the engine. The other failure point on this engine is the high pressure fuel pump cap that rides against the end of the intake camshaft. I'd make sure you have replaced that with a new one.
Engine out at this point, I would check the big and small end bearings and check for wear considering oil starvation issues, I didn't think that the pickup was that bad tbh but may Look different in the flesh
The numbers on the turbo are from where someone has refurbished it in the past. Great video 👍
So glad I replaced the pickup pipe in my Mk5 GTI, preventive maintenance is KEY for 2.0tfsi engines
I would take it out at this point and go through the block check the bearings and crank then you practically have a rebuilt engine. great to watch keep em coming.
Hey Dean, this was a really good one, very interesting to see more of the technical stuff. It would be quite entertaining and interesting to see one of these engines fully removed from the car but I would imagine it is more work and money, so it is up to you.
Always a pleasure watching your videos. Good luck with the rebuild
Bin the engine, there will probably be other things wrong with it and a full rebuild will be more than an engine swap. Drop in a K04 CDL complete engine. P.S. love the content. Keep it up!
these uploads are flying in this year dean hope to keep up this way hope your ok and keeping busy 👍👋 and am for the sshhh idea easier and cheaper best option as this parts cannon cing out here I see lol and be easier pulling block from know but watever u decide pal am just watching yi😂👍😎
150,000 on the clock... I'd look for another engine .. the rings loook to be passing .. Oil starvation to the Top cams and the Turbo.. I'd drop the bottom end and hone and re ring the bottom end.. would probably cost you less with another engine .. also time to check the clutch with that miles on it .. Keep up the good work ..
Good update Dean. No to the engine out from me.. makes it more like a quick fix that I'd tackle that way.
Great content as usual. As your at the stage of 50/50. I think. Engine out is a good option at this point. It will make the repair/replacements a whole lot easier. 👍👍👍👍
I love this project. Keep it up and do the best of it please!
I think by mere looking at the top section that oil pump being dark shows that bearings might not be happy even crankshaft tolerance is questionable at this stage.
*The poor golf has been through a lot looking forward to seeing it done and back on the road* 👀
Deffo need more videos like this ! Enjoyed it 🙌🏾
It’s important to check the play on the end of the balancer shafts. If they have any play the engine will lose a lot oil pressure thru oil seeping thru the balance shaft and oil/ balancer housing.It’s quite common on bpy ea113s.
If it’s had oil starvation then the crank is probably toast, I wouldn’t order anything until I saw the journals/bearings, second hand motor might be easier
@squeakers27

Was thinking this too, if oil starvation surely everything is fairly knackered. Would be more financially viable to get a second hand engine perhaps.
After seeing you take that Turbo Off, I think you may find it was the turbo that actually caused all the problems because the bearings broke up and blocked the oil feed pipe , The intern starved the furthest part away on the head , good luck with the rebuild and keep up the good work ,
Great video,very informative,learned few new things,know you know what is what .keep it up and carry on.👍👍👍😎😎😎
Really looking forward to this as I have a Grey Mk5Golfgti dsg ..
Hi Dean, great content. I would take the engine out, seeing as you’ve stripped much. It will enable a full bottom end inspection, and give everything a thorough clean before reassembly. Getting another complete engine also involves risk unless it is a warranted runner with certified mileage. Take care on your travels 👍😎
While you are there.....remove the oil cooler & oil filter housing and inspect the check valves. The oil filter bypass valve can separate. Also, inspect the oil passages on the cam chain cover, restrictions in these passges will affect the HPFP follower.
I did a rebuild on an Audi A4 and that balance shaft damper sprocket broke and decided to go down the oil pump conversion route . You can either use the 1.8t pump and buy an adapter for oil filter to ensure no oil pressure problems (this is the expensive route) or use a 2.0 TDi BKD oil pump with 23 teeth sprocket and don't have to do anything with the oil filter as it gives higher oil pressure than the standard pump. The oil pump, chain and tensioner, sprocket and oil baffle cost me about £100.
Hi it looks like the rings have been passing judging by the tarnishing above the oil pump , hence the carbon in the pick up gauze , I would inspect further so as not to do a load of work to a bad result , just my opinion not being picky ps love watching your channel
Great video, I’d have the engine out a check that crank just for piece of mind
Great channel buddy love it fair play great knowledge too
I think you should take the block out and do a full engine rebuild to avoid further problems with the piston rings, maybe they could be old and worn as well. plus it would be more content for us.
Great video dude you definitely know you stuff about cars wish you lived nextdoor to me lol keep safe dude
There was a lot of debris in that oil pick up pipe, interesting video. Cheers
best off getting a air compressor line and shooting pressurised air down the oil and coolant channels/valleys to make sure there's no blockage there too and any other channels for oil to get to the head
I'm no expert, but i'd take the engine out given you need to do a substantial amount of work to rebuild. From the other comments from people with more knowledge, it sounds like a bit more testing of the lower end (oil pump etc) might be a good idea given whats happened at the top end. You don't want to put it all back in to then find it it was something relatively simple to check! The bonus for the rest of us is that all this makes great content too! :) Keep up the awesome work Dean!
yeah defo think an engine out job, as ya kinda almost there anyway! access is key as they say. great content, keep it up buddy
Sometimes the longer way s the easier way. Make your life easier. Decat is a must
my pd140 had oil flow problems after turbo failure. found all the cam bearings free from any lining lol just down to the bronze
I will definitely take the shell’s to check the shells as you are this deep into it. Not knowing these engines is there a mod to remove the balance shaft like the Honda K-series?????
Take the engine out and that will the job so much easyer !! Nice video !!
It used to be you turned the head upside down make sure the valves are closed and pour some petrol, if it drained your valves weren’t closing properly. A big Parts washer (or old dishwasher) on the wish list I hope?
Bit cheeky but worth a punt here...If your replacing the turbo can I have the old one Dean? Looking for any turbo as a wee ornament for my shed. Slowly self teaching myself working on cars and this channel is a massive help. Gonna buy myself a wee track project car wether its a salvage car or just needing a bit of work
Aye Deano. You blagged filtering the oil there fella🤣🤣
For ease of assembly any decent mechanic will agree that its best to take the, unit out. As you have said you are so deep in now taking it out and making life easier on reassembly is not a huge jump.
Engine out, worth the effort and good viewing.
Why not go ko4 turbo. You need new turbo and injectors anyway. Definitely leave engine in. Much easier. Knock the pre cat out 👍
@SavingSalvage
2 жыл бұрын
Because the cheapest I could find injectors untested was like £350/400. Then the turbos, re routed DV and hoses etc… just would end up costing too much really.
Engine out if you want 👍I will watch either way 👍
Awesome pal id take the block out make it easier to do the belt etc 👍
Great video man 👌
Hi buddy, I think taking the engine out would make great content for your channel better camera angles etc. And I might learn something new. Curiosity take what out the down pipe and what would it achieve? Keep up the hard work! And keep the content coming! 👌
I’d say engine out now you’ve got this far. As well as checking bottom end as others have said take the pistons out and check pistons, rings, bores, rods etc. Leave the close coupled cat in, it’s probably still fine and taking it out might mess up lambda control, diagnostics etc
Definitely take the engine out it will make fantastic content and make the engine like new again 👌
My advice you've done all the hard work forge it bigger turbo take it up a notch
Great video
Nice to these vlogs Iv a mk6 gti it’s leaking oil badly but somehow can’t seem to fault find the actual leak , Iv replaced the seal bearing , oil pressure sensor yet it still spewing oil can’t see it leaking after a drive I lift up hood to find oil all over the belts and alternator wondered if you can tell me a few other possibilities thanks
Don’t know if it’s already been said but if your considering taking the engine out it might be as easy to get a complete 2nd engine and put that in
To be honest Dean of take the engine out, I didn't think the oil strainer looked to bad, but I'd check the bottom end and oil pump before reinstalling, Great job though, well done.
Do a balance shaft delete when you put it all back together?
Loosen the engine mounts with a table under the motor and raise the car with the lift, isn't necessary to take it out from the front, pretty easy.
Would you do a Honda Civic type r ep3 salvage build next ?
Love these cars
I've 186k miles on my vRS Octavia, only changed the cam follower at 184k miles, was never done before, had a few scratches but plenty of life left, 10k oil changes, original turbo, clutch(although starting to show signs on way out), anything I need to be worrying about as preventive maintenance at this point....
Get rid of the pre cat as its not required to pass a UK MOT. It is there for I think German cold start emissions test. Once knocked out its a free 5bhp gain.
If it's not too hard take the block out. Your back will thank you for it 😁
Personally Dean I'd be looking for another engine before going to buying bits for this one. You need to know if there's been damage to the bottom end, plus from the video that oil pick up pipe didn't look all that bad, dirty yes but was it actually blocked?
@andyhopkinson2708
2 жыл бұрын
Said that in the first video easy enough to pick one up on ebay
I'd say engine out for through check over ,and it would make things easier to rebuild after
Did think turbo would be Toast considering it is almost instantly fed with oil and if oil pressure has been lost then it was a certainty to fail, be aswell with a known good engine at this point considering the mileage and chance of crankshaft damage, very least you need to do here is take the big end caps of for a look
Take it out mate, can get to everything nice and easy then. Like you say, you're pretty much there 💁♂️
Nice work, I'd have the engine out tbh. I'd be a bit OCD with checking everything. 🙈😂
Engine out definitely 👍
Definitely change the oil pump Dean if you think it’s had oil starvation 🤔
It's completely up to you
I think I need to bring my car to you! A4 B7 PD140 with running issues :D
I would suggest engine removal. As you say, it would be easier to build up the engine. Also, as others have suggested you could check that the bearings in the block are in good shape.It would be such a shame to spend a lot of money, do a rebuild and then have an engine failure. Loving your current crop of troublesome cars!
Might as well take the engine out as you've already got the engine half split if you then remove, it you can give it a good going over and make sure everything is on point. And being volkswagen it's not that hard to remove the front end. So might as well make a decent job of it since your already half way there 👍
Take the block out, and yes to a performance downpipe:)
Whip the block out, might as well attack it on the bench and have proper access 👍🏼
Take the engine out, but leave the AC rad and compressor on. We tend to do this a lot, just swing it out the way and cable tie it all up. Saves a regas then 😊
@SavingSalvage
2 жыл бұрын
That’s true, I’ve done that before actually. Just bend it out the way 😅
Engine out! Great content tho. 👌
Engine out, decat, big turbo 👍
Whip the engine out for a bench re-build. Can clean the block properly and refit it factory fresh.
More on the v10 touareg please
I'd say he was fairly confident 🤣
Take it out and also the engine 👍
Hi, top tune a 2.0 Golf you require a upgraded oilpump...
Geez! I have the same engine in my car and I think the turbo is going out. Under 100000 miles on the clock, luckily mine is mounted longitudinally but damn if it seizes up
Turbo rebuilds Ltd in Blackpool for turbo core mate
Engine our would he my vote....just hope this one isn't like the waterlogged Audi engine that almost finished you off with it's constant in/out. And yes, knock it out!
Do not skim the head. If it's never been overheated, then it doesn't need skimmed. Even then, replacing it is better than skimming. High compression GDI engine you'll be bumping up the compression ratio, reducing the valve to piston distance (not a good idea on an engine with VVT) and altering where the direct injector sprays on the piston.
I'm afraid I must respectfully disagree with those who say it is easier to leave the engine in. From where you are now, you could have it out in less than an hour. I guarantee you that trying to assemble the top end and install and torque the turbo with the engine in will not only take additional hours, but be next to impossible to correctly torque everything. Not to mention trying to do the timing belt. I speak from experience with this exact engine - take it out.
@tommorides8086
2 жыл бұрын
How long must it take you to do a timing belt on this engine, if you remove the engines on the ones you do? Must be horrendous for you removing an entire engine just to replace a belt.
What happened to the Porsche mate Love that
You should of check crack and rod bearings… if the engines had oil starvation then there’s a good chance of further damage
So is it looking like the failure is due to a clogged oil strainer? I've got a Octavia vrs with this engine and I'm going to change mine now it's got 110k miles on the clock. And just for my selfishness knock the cat out just to show me how to do it!! I'm also interested how the cam chain will be fitted.
@SavingSalvage

Yes it seems that way! Yes I would advise changing the pick up pipe every sort of 70k miles.
Question: how did you learn so much about engines in detail and how everything works. Did you do a college course
@daveraybould9539

He trained as a mechanic and used to work as an Audi tech.
Engine out would make for an easier rebuild and good content too
If the head has suffered from oil starvation and trashed the bearings, it's likely that the turbo failed because of the same issue. Can you be certain that swarf hasn't found its way into the rest of the oil system? Remove the engine, strip it completely and flush all the oil galleries out, it's the only way to ensure that the rebuilt engine doesn't fail in short order.
@SavingSalvage
2 жыл бұрын
I’ve drained the oil and there’s no shavings or anything in it at all, completely clean. Also once sumo removed there’s nothing in there either. So I’m confident it all happened pretty quick (the failure)
Engine out 🤙🏻
I would remove the block if it was my car and check bearings, clutch plate and replace the main seals so there are no bothersome leaks.
Would be cheaper to sell the standard downpipe and get a decat, you can buy a decat on eBay for these for around £110 delivered
In situ 60 quid is 60 off the top line and the work going into this is already making it a tight profit margin
Bro you should check it, and rebuild if something is wrong, that's the best you can do
