Hi Everyone and Welcome to Promethean Sewing Machines, where I am unashamedly rebelliously creative when it comes to taking old forgotten sewing machines and bringing them back to life in a beautiful way.
Meet my new project:
This is the second part in my series on restoring this machine. Previously I removed her parts and now I'll walk you through my steps from paint removal to top coat. Hope you like it!
~Marie

Very well done. You have brought the machine back to life.
I have an 1894 model that i just purchased with the treadle and am currently gathering some supplies for the restoration. I am going to be using those decals so thank you so much for posting this video.

Thank you! 😊
I found this episode so encouraging. I have an old treadle machine out in the garage that I got our of my mother's barn that is so rusted. I didn't know what to do with her but now I'm going to try painting her as you have done. Great show. Looking forward to the next.

Lots of work to do on this one. I hope you’re initially wearing a mask & getting plenty of fresh air in your work area if the chemicals have strong fumes. 😉 Lotsa parts in the bobbin winder assembly! You must really love doing these projects. 😊She’ll look great when you’re finished, no matter the color you choose.

It's like a big crazy puzzle 😂 most things I do don't have fumes, but I make sure it's ventilated. I think the worst is while I'm cleaning really dirty parts, I get that black powder everywhere. In my ears... All good though 😁
All your machines are so unique. It would be hard for me to pick a favorite
May I suggest using Dolphin glaze UPO714. Glaze the whole machine. This stuff is real creamy, sands easy. Will save you hours in labor. It’s designed for pin holes.

Thanks! Do you know how it works with self etching primer?

This product is made to go over pin holes in primer. A bit pricey. I use it to skim coat the bed and touch up elsewhere. KZread has videos. Thanks Mike.
Having tried multiple methods of removing paint from these machines, including this method, I can tell you that the easiest way to remove the shellac and the asphalt based paint Singer used to create their black color is electrolysis. Electrolysis is much easier than it sounds, it's literally just a bucket, chicken wire, and a battery charger, it blasts everything off right down to bare metal, it's really the only way to fly. I won't use any other method anymore, nothing came close to electrolysis.

I'm going to try that on my next one! I'm guessing hooking a positive and negative to the chicken wire and wrapping it around the machine?

@@prometheansewingmachines please video tape the process. I just found your video. I am in the process of sanding bonds to get it ready to paint. Yes changing colors is just a nightmare. Hoping my last color make me happy.
Wow!! I have always wondered how they re-do these wonderful machines. I love it but for me just a little less decals would be better because I think my sewing brain would suffer with all the extra detractions. 😅 You have done an AMAZING JOB AND I LOVE THE COLOR!!❤❤❤

Awesome job! This looks amazing! Did the clear coat damage the decals at all? Thank you for posting!😎

Thanks! The clearcoat doesn't hurt them at all. It only protects them and keeps them shiny :)

@@denisvelikov8081 for this machine I purchase decals from singerdecals.com but for the ones that I make I use usually a clear water slide decal paper

Question, how many cans of paint do you use to completely finish the paint job, is it one enough or I need to consider more than one can, because you’re giving me the courage to try to repaint the family’s old sewing machine, my grandpa taught me how to get it serviced and mechanically speaking is running smooth it’s just how it has change through time and at times mistreated that is a shame I would greatly appreciate all your advice, love your videos I’m a fan now ❤

I don't think so in this machine. I think it is all steel.
If you want the finish smooth, block sanding is your friend :)
I cleaned and rebuilt my wife’s grandmothers treadle singer sewing . Got new leather to operate with treadle. Only thing cannot find are needles. The top of the needle is square not round. You know any source for those needles?

I asume that this guestion have been asked million times but what camera would be good for making this kind of videos?

I have switched off from different cameras along the way. I use a Sony zv1 in my sewing room and I switched over to using a Google pixel phone camera with a remote, for my shop .
They don't make that kind of powerful stripper anymore, you are lucky to have it! It's hard to remove the jappaning with the stripper available today.

A combination of degreaser, a wire brush or abrasive pad on a rotary tool, and polishing wheels. I'll try to put more detail in a future video
I have a model 27 with same decals , yes there is alot more details in original but i also think it was all golds not a bronze , like shades of gold , this is probably becuase alif of the original stuff got lost over time or copyright infringement most likely...
