Restoring a Singer 115 Sewing Machine Part 1 - Taking her apart and some history

Hi Everyone and Welcome to Promethean Sewing Machines, where I am unashamedly rebelliously creative when it comes to taking old forgotten sewing machines and bringing them back to life in a beautiful way.
Meet my new project:
This one is very personal to me. It is a machine that belonged my Great Grandmother, Mary Julia Tooke's, and was used on our farm down in Louisiana for her lifetime. The 115 is a fairly rare machine and has a beautiful rotary hook. I took a little time to explain the history of the machine model and how she came to be in the whole process of Singer evolution. This is just part one.
Hope you like it!
Marie

Wow! Marie, you have some interesting machines! I recently got a W&W D9, but haven't had a chance to get her on the bench just yet. Thanks for sharing this! Looking forward to the rest of the project. Liz's grandfather was a machinist at W&W and stayed on after the purchase by Singer.

Found this very helpful and interesting Marie. Thanks for showing the breakdown. I am having some fun painting up a machine, but I do not have a tank or even a decent workspace. Yet, you inspire me to try. Have a good day. (Oh, I never heard of a 115.)

Hi Marie, love that machine I own a few. These machine need a L style bobbin. And a 20u bobbin case or your original case will accept the L style bobbin. The threaded hole in the back of the machine was what held the old style hand crank. Thanks Mike.

Yes. Don’t feel defeated on the hook set screws. I messed with it for about an hour. Easer to remove hook shaft with the hook attached. Nothing in my way for a decent scrubbing. Hook attached to the shaft makes a great holder will cleaning. Thanks Mike

Wow for a minute I thought I may have misidentified my grandmothers machine but no, mine is a 15 from the early 1930s. On the outside they look identical same face plate same decals. Love watching your process of transformation.

It seems to have acquired quite an appetite for Chapman bits - it's snacking on the like potato chips! I am sure by the time you're finished with it, though, it will settle down to a more sensible diet of grease and oil with the occasional needle sometimes to satisfy its need for 'trace metals and minerals'. :-)

My problem is the tiny little shuttle/hook screws. I stripped one, drilled the head off, now the body is stuck in the back half. I got it apart but will have to find some very tiny little drill bits to drill it out. I don't know where I'm going to find some replacement screws 🥴 Edit: I can't get my presser bar dislodged from the arm for the life of me. It's been sitting in penetrating for two days now. My stitch length fork just popped right out before I could get the feed dog bar out. Looks like that big screw on the back is clipped in, I don't want to mess with that. I don't understand how to get the clamped arm/fork out 🤔 it doesn't look like it can be removed...

I also have a 115 treadle in the queue! Thank you for the video, you have a nice mello easy going style of presentation. I like it. By the way, those bobbin cases are a rarity and expensive to replace. I understand that there is a modification that can be done to a modern common 20U bobbin case, do you have any info or video on that? Thanks again.

Hi Marie, what paint brands and types do you recommend for repainting an old machine? Also, what do you use for topcoats?

I like to use Rust-Oleum enamels on my machines. In general on an iron machine I use a filler primer as a base over bare metal, and then for a clear coat I have been using diamond coat in the spray can, but right now I am experimenting with a couple other clear coats. Diamond coat does give an amazing finish though.
