    Perfect on the managing a spread cant get people to understand that they always want 8 rods out 4 on each side and 1 out the back.Thinking there getting more done u can get twice as much done with half the rods because u can keep those all controlled exactly like u want them and cut into little cuts etc.Great video bro as always!!!

    I would also add to the safety portion of the video to not go beyond the capabilities of your boat. For instance I own a 12'×36" Jon boat. Before going anywhere, I check the wind speeds for the location where I plan to fish. If the wind speed is over 10 mph, I won't go out in big water. If somebody owns a pontoon boat, they probably shouldn't go out in the ocean (especially in high winds). Anyway keep up the good work, Mike.

    Hey Mike, I take a spark plug cable and pull the wire out of the center. Cut it into bead sized parts and use it in place of beads on heavy egg sinker rigs. You could still add the beads if you want the noise but just put the rubber next to your swivel. It really reduces the impact of the weight (and beads) slamming into the swivel.

    I will set some way out and some close. I stagger the lengths on every other rod to reduce the chances for tangles with each other. You are correct, the weights aren’t 100% needed. Try some with weight and some without until you find what is working best. 👍👍👍👍.

    Mike - you show 3 ways of rigging bunker on this video - great info. For new fisherman that catch a lot more live mackerel sabiki fishing than "snagging" or cast-netting bunker - how do you compare the 2? Can you catch the same big Stripers on mackerel just like bunker? Or is bunker that much preferred by the Striper? Also, I always have hooked the mackerel on the neck, just behind the head. Is that the best method for live mackerel, or do you use the same 3 varying hook configurations to keep your baits spread about the water, just like bunker tips you gave?

  • @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS

    @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS

    Good questions. We fish with Joe Marciano of the Hard Merchandise quite a bit up in Boston and Gloucester. We used Macks up there and caught lots of good fish, but when he sees Bunker around he wants them over Macks. The Macks aren’t as hearty as the Bunker so we just hooked them in the nose, the shoulders is also fine the way your doing it. Hooking them in the tail will probably kill them quicker. Check out a few of these. There are 5 or 6 videos on my channel with him. kzread.info/dash/bejne/m3WKyMiKiLbPdZs.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZoeNycmwn9zOnKw.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZY57ubGqhtXRo9Y.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/pZZ3pKeIZajIZ5M.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/lpym2JSGodCwe6g.html

    I use 2/0 with 4” baits. 3/0-4/0 with 6-8” baits. 6/0-7/0 with eels. 8/0-9/0 with live adult Bunker 10-12” or chunking one saltwater. Chunking in freshwater I use 4/0-5/0 unless the lake holds fish over 40lbs, then I may go larger.

    Hey Mike what rod length do you recommend for a bank fisherman ? Seems 7'6" is too short.

  • @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS

    @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS

    4 жыл бұрын

    The longer the better for casting distance. A stiffer rod will cast further, but if you’re a bait guy you want a soft tip and if you’re a plug guy you want the lighter rods so you won’t get exhausted. Catfish Dave does a lot of bank fishing. Check out his channel, he has a list of his gear in descriptions. 👍👍👍

  • @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS

    @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS

    2 жыл бұрын

    A lot depends on the size bait versus the size fish you are seeing. Water clarity plays a part too. If it’s clear water go with a single hook in the tail to keep the bait swimming away from the bank. If you use 2 hook rig, yes put bottom hook in head.

    Mike, great video. You seem a fan of casting rod set-ups and am interested why that is. What’s your comparison to spinning setups specifically for Striper fishing? I’ve used Shimano Bait Runner reels on spinning setups for live bait fishing forever and wanted to know if you had any luck?

  • @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS

    @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS

    I used to guide for lake trout with your same exact rig. It’s the best when you need to let a fish run and take the bait down. For larger fish a casting setup gives you much more power and comfort but You can easily do what we do with your spinning gear, make sure you use mono for live and cut bait.

    Mike Smedley - thanks! Toughest problem is knowing how long to let them run before reeling for hook set. So I usually allow them 30 seconds or more on a tear ... then when I think they’ve slowed down and have turned the bait down the gullet - I start reeling. But I do miss some fish, but I suppose mostly smaller fish that take longer to get her down. So the Bait Runner set on light pull (to me) is better than free spoiling a standard reel. But are there tips on how not to have to wait so long with the Striper crashing a bait and then going on a long tear! Thx ! Great info!

  • @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS

    @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS

    I personally lock up the drag and firmly pull up on the rod to help the circle hook when the baits are hooked in the mouth. Stripers vacuum feed the entire bait so you shouldn’t need to let them run if you are using mono and a soft tip rod. This let’s them complete the vacuum process without feeling the rod. You should not miss any fish large enough to fit the bait entirely in its mouth. Braid and a stiff tip will kill you every time. They will drop it. You May miss smaller fish.

    @@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS No doubt, palomars are great with most line types and weights. They also help brittle lines by splitting the load at the most critical part of the knot. But I prefer my modified snell for live bait trolling and I feel I lose nothing with it. When tied right, I've found my hook up rate has improved dramatically by turning the hook point into the mouth at the most critical time. I also wanted something I could tie fast and easy. I'll try to get a video over to you on it. A knot class would be a very beneficial video for you some time!

    I do believe a snell improves hookups with bent eye hooks, but once I switched to straight eye circle hooks (especially with Owner MUTU hooks) and a Palomar my hookups have improved beyond belief in every application. If you have anything less than 90% strike to hookup, give them a try.

    A snell isn’t really best for a straight eyed hook, but I rarely snell a bent eye to be honest. After so many years I just have confidence in a knot. I don’t like the way the front edge of the bent eye looks with a snell. It looks like it can stop the hook from sliding when you study it.

    Three things happen when you hook the fish in the tail. 1. Lead Weight pulls down the tail. Head points up. 2. The fish is being pulled backwards so the gills get pulled open which brings it to the surface. 3. The fish swims in circles which brings it to the surface.
