I stopped in Annapolis this past weekend on my way back from the beach. Beautiful spot on a bridge above the Severn river next to the city and naval academy. It was a perfect day and the water was clear enough that I could see a few feet underwater for over a hundred yards out (a privlidged position). I cast far out with a variety of lures and noticed "snakes" following my lure every time about three feet behind.: sometimes one or two, sometimes as many as five. After one turned sideways, I realized they were striped bass! They wouldn't hit the lure. I spent an hour and a half like this; in retrospect, I think the sun being so bright, they felt exposed and wouldn't take the lure. I tried everything, stopping my lure cold as if it was having a heart attack and let it sink to the bottom, twitched it, skipped it, etc. Absolutely nothing would make them hit the lure. I will go back this weekend and try it at night. I know they are there.

tolpacourt not sure what you mean. People use live eels all the time for more than just trolling. . As long as you have a pretty steady current you can use live eels quite successfully in a drift. I usually like to keep them on ice to subdue them for a little so theyre less likley to knot the line up., but as long as the current is moving at a decent pace it will keep them straightened out. Ive caught pretty much all my 40+ lbers using live eels drifting.

@wokandwoll4lyfe

tolpacourt bass always attack from behind, kinda like a sneak attack. They pretty much inhale the bait and swallow it whole, unlike a bluefish who attacks with its teeth. thats why when fishing with eels you can always tell the difference between a blue and bass strike when you reel in. A blue strike and youll only have half an eel left lol

John Skinner Fishing which one do you like better? I just cant see getting a better shot with my gopro seems really great how do you set yours for nite fishing? Ibe been doing 980 at 60fps but the film is spot like should i turn on the spot meter would that help?
Nice video! I am going surf fishing on the south shore of Long Island in late July. Do you have any tips or ideas for fishing at that time?
Hey john, I just entered a local striper tournament hosted by a bar in my town every year. This year I'm fishing by myself on my boat and can't figure out a solid strategy. It's open to bay, boat, or surf. Any general suggestions? Trolling similar rigs like this tube and worm or fishing buck tails or eels under bridges? Thanks a lot
New to striper fishing have been fishing for fluke for a while though...what do you recommend using for stripers and blue fish off an inlet?
Great video, stripers are back. Got a 42in out of Jones inlet before the storms came through. How's it going out east?
I see so many TikTok videos that have similar content but 0 explanation so I always refer ppl to your video on this platform. YOU HELPED ME A LOT BUT IM POOR AND CAN'T THANK YOU WITH $$$ but I do what I can to help get your name out!!!! Keep up the good work
John, thank you. This provided great insight on bass behavior, and the tube & worm rig. I'm curious what you think the two biggest were: 50-60lb class?

Nice video, wish I got to see u hook one those monsters. You said east coast, where would this be at? Ive been fishing quite sometimes on shore but haven't caught over a 30". I was wondering if you could give me some few spots besides the capes.
John, are those stripers sitting behind those boulders waiting to ambush? it seems that they won't chase it long considering there being good current and then return to the current break.
Where in NYC are you from John? Love the video! What camera is this again?
Hey john, what is the best way to fish a bunker school,during the day, without using bunker at all? What is the most effective kind of gulp for fluke fishing?

Do you have any weights on to keep it in the water?
Hi john, what kind of swivel is that? i never seen that before? is it tied to a rod or some kind of pole? what is actually twisting?
is this being used with lead core line? and is there any info on being able to control bait depth while trolling?
Hey John, have you ever thought of making a video primarily based on you'r fishing gear? I am completely new to surf casting and I am struggeling finding the right gear. Is there anyway you can help me out?
Great video! You should think about selling these in the form of Podcasts! Your insight is like no one else's. Question: do you typically use any weight with the tube and worm rig. Also you should get a little more into rig details for the newbies or guys that have never tried this method before. Thank you sir!
Hey John. Rick from NJ here again. How would you suggest fishing the Gulp version tipped with a real blood worm for bass in a fairly shallow back bay area.? Would it be more effective rigging it fishfinder style and retrieving slowly or just casting out and leaving it? Thanks

Another great vid can u please upload any time u can daily if needed ur channel will grow and do u think this season is if to a good start
Wondering if a live eel would cooperate. However, it does appear that the common knowledge of stripers being line shy (or shy in general) is more solidified by this documentation video. Another great upload.

Relax and Fish Cooperate? You mean rigged for trolling? People rig dead eels for trolling.
@wokandwoll4lyfe
9 жыл бұрын
tolpacourt not sure what you mean.
Whats better for striper fishing winter spring fall or summer cause im planning to go striper fishing this year
Hey john, are you using a kayak in this vide, and if not is it productive to fish this method on a kayak?

Awesome video! I’ve tested both gulp Alive Sandworm and live Sandworm. Live always produces much better results. Could it be the striper in your video were turned off after seeing the artificial sand worm?

@@JohnSkinnerFishing can you share how you hook the gulp sandworm? The 6 inch gulp are so skinny they don’t even seem to fit the T-Man hooks. Also, I purchased your online course and it would be greater if you offered a class strictly on Long Island Sound fishing and how to find stripers there compared to the Atlantic side
Thank you for figuring out a halfway decent way to film stripers approaching and striking. This has answered so many questions that I had due to the fact that the west coast estuaries and rivers tend to stay very murky. Any chance you could fish an live pogy or some other type of large baitfish with your camera set up?

Mr. Skinner what seasons will you use eel tube / blood worms .
i was admiring how that swivel did its job i think adding some lube or oil to it will make it twist continuously but i guess the smell would have negative effect on fish

Hi Mr. Skinner, huge fan! You join the braid and leader with a barrel swivel, but when I seem to join the two I feel like the swivel ruins the guides. Do you think it's an effective way to join the two lines? IF not, what knot do you suggest that I use to tie the two? I've lost so many lures with the leader falling off.. thank you for your help!

I dunno why the bass hit the worm end. It's hard to believe any predator wouldn't go for the head, especially when attacking a super slippery prey like eels.
@wokandwoll4lyfe
9 жыл бұрын
tolpacourt bass always attack from behind, kinda like a sneak attack. They pretty much inhale the bait and swallow it whole, unlike a bluefish who attacks with its teeth. thats why when fishing with eels you can always tell the difference between a blue and bass strike when you reel in. A blue strike and youll only have half an eel left lol

Pretty much nothing always happens, but bass are an ambush predator, and rely on the stealth of attacking from behind to attack their prey.

wokandwoll4lyfe Pike are ambush predators and they often t-bone big lures. I think all predators will do the expedient, efficient thing and feed using the least amount of effort.
