String comparison review - D'Addario XT vs Flatwound

The second instalment in my string review series. This time I've put on a set of D'Addario XT Phosphor Bronze 11-40. For consistency, I've kept the microphone, mic placement, mandolin, pick, room and tune the same. There's nothing overly scientific about this, I'll just be changing to a different set each time I need to change strings and giving my initial thoughts.

love your style Tom, great use of double stops. I like the feel of the flat wounds too but volume can be an issue. have you tried the GHS Silk and Bronze 11-40? they don't seem to have as long of a break in period and last a long time.

Thanks very much, I agree about the flat wounds. I haven’t tried those but will have to get hold of a set for the next one of these videos!

I hear volume being the same but I think that the SS strings gave a touch darker tone and maybe woodier tone than the XT. Could I be wrong? I think I hear less treble from the SS strings maybe?

The XT got way more punch and better sound over all.
