Which Mandolin Strings? String Review - D'addario Flat Wound

Музыка

The first in a new series of videos reviewing and comparing widely available mandolin strings. To kick it off, I've put on a set of D'addario stainless steel flatwounds 11-36. For consistency, I'm using the same microphone, mic placement, mandolin, pick and room for each video and the strings will be on the instrument for the same amount of time. At the end of the series, I'll conclude with my thoughts on all of the strings tested, plus you can make up your own mind with the sound comparison!

There are many string comparison videos on U Tube. I find they have no use to me or for any one else who doesn’t play the same or equal quality mandolin that the presenter uses.

They have a creamier tone "BUTTERY". Smooth....not as brash as phosphor bronze and they feel great! Do perhaps you miss some overtones, i will sacrifice the minimal overtone benefit, any day for less brash or harshness ...

What are the pros and cons of a mandolin vs an octave mandolin? In terms of playing fiddle tunes/folk music

A mandolin has great projection and sits well with other tune instruments. It's also the same tuning and pitch as fiddle so that makes learning fiddle tunes dead easy, the scale length is also fairly compact so that makes getting around the fingerboard easier. However, being tuned an octave lower, the octave mandolin has a deeper sound, more bass and is better for accompanying folk songs and tunes than a mandolin, but is slightly trickier to play tunes on. So as a general rule I'd prefer a mandolin for melody playing and an octave mandolin for chords. I also do the opposite on both though, so I'm very open to mixing it up a bit!

@@tomkimbermusic I see, thank you. Guess the solution to my quandary is to buy a tenor mandola! ;)

Those flatwounds sound like they have just a tad less projection or volume than comparable roundwounds, but otherwise they absolutely great on that f-top, and for the life of me, I cannot understand why experienced players keep insisting that flatwounds are NOT to be used on such f-top style mandolins? Why? I just do not understand their logic?

Yeah they've got a little bit less cut to them so I think the bluegrass guys like the attack that phosphor bronze gives you. Great sounding strings though
