Great story. I’m glad your patient made it. The codes I’ve witnessed have not been so fortunate

I am sorry to hear that; it is definitely a risk of the job. I was very fortunate where a lot of factors lined up, like catching it and acting very quickly, the anesthesiologist being present in that moment, and working together with an excellent team. I hope my story serves as a small lesson for others going into the field.

It sounds like a very stressful time but you had a lot of support and everyone worked as a team to get the pt stable. That kind of teamwork is so obvious in the the OR and is part of what attracted me to this profession.

I really appreciated the team work that happened that day. My trust in all of those providers only grew from that day.

Besides codes, how is the stress overall?

I find there to be a baseline stress overall because as anesthesia providers we are the patients guardians (so are the other providers in the room but we are directly managing a patient’s vital signs). We have to be on high alert for significant blood loss, a potential fire, a difficult airway, etc.

Have any patients ever passed away during your cases?

I have not experienced this but some of my coworkers have. It is possible I will experience this over the lifetime of my career.

I just don’t understand your purpose if there is an anesthesiologist there. I followed one before they barely do anything. They make sure the patient goes under then pops to the next room.

As you stated, the Anesthesiologist is bouncing around rooms. In that scenario I would be the one staying in the room providing anesthesia!

who do you think I managing the anesthesia after the anesthesiologist leaves? Do you think patient just goes to sleep, turn ventilator on then walk away? Someone needs to be one and one with the patient managing the patient with medication and adjusting and monitoring the ventilator.
