The much anticipated Streets of Rage 4 is finally out on all the big platforms, and so is this review. I've played through it a few times, unlocked some characters, fiddled with the modes, had fun with friends, and what do I think?...well, it's been quite the journey.

As much as I'm thoroughly enjoying SOR 4, I absolutely LOVE free-on-PC Streets Of Rage Remake. But SOR 4 is a hell of a lot of old skool fun and is priced absolutely perfect (at least on PC, don't know how much it costs on the consoles). My partner and myself played it til our thumbs bled over the entirety of it's launch weekend. Memories I'll always treasure. Great honest review again, Kim. As much as I love your multi-mini-review vids, I do adore your single game reviews and documentaries that delve into the history of all things video games and kooky pro wrestling. I'm not a Patron. I wish I was. But I'm a working class guy and this whole thing is happening in the world right now... I've watched and re-watch countless videos of yours. Someone suggested your vids to me about...6-7 years ago. You were still around 1k subs. Your uploads are always something to look forward to. I've enjoyed watch you mature and improve your content over the years. Really become yourself. I don't fanboy often, I don't comment much on KZread. I just wanted to say thanks again. Thanks for being so nice when I Dm'ed you randomly on Twitter a few years ago to gush about Concsolevania lol. I hope this finds you well. You keep being you and pushing out great content too. I agree. This game, much like most of my favorite music albums; didn't grab me right away but I slowly fell in love with it on subsequent plays, as I discovered more and more nuances and neat details, becoming an unstoppable combo-chaining killing machine. Seriously people, if you don't like it too much at first, give it a couple more tries. It is ultimately an awesome "labor of love" effort and a worthy sequel. Looking forward to the continuation of the series and a Shinobi game done in this style (I... just... came... in my pants).

As someone who loves SOR, it's one of the most important franchises to me (along with Street Fighter, having been there at the start for both) - SOR 4 is great ... as a first attempt, and I'm overall happy with what they provided us after such a long time away. Problems though - Nostalgic soundtrack is a bizarre mix of megadrive SOR2 and game gear SOR1 tracks. Also they place tracks in bizarre places. Outside of weapons breaking and a few enemies, the sheer lack of SOR 3 features is criminal. No music, no branching paths, no (proper) star moves, the SOR3 cast being the only ones to use special weapon attacks, all missing. Armour moves - this is used WAY too much in this game. They should have had the heavy attack be able to bust through it (or at least have it stop the attack from coming out in some way) it's too overused and bloody obnoxious. New star moves - these are fine but then the game doesn't want you to use them for a good score grade. I HATE when games force you to not use everything you have. It's bad design as I just don't play with them at all now! Enemies in general being too efficient now, they ALWAYS sneak a jab in while you can't do anything about it, Donovan is the best example of this as well as being overpowered for a mere goon. Mr and Ms Y are fine in themselves but they should have been the cover for a true boss who is behind it all they just don't have the "thing" that makes them believable head villains. SOR 3 Shiva is a LIE. He controls nothing like SOR3, I want that busted version to have some fun with! leave this weird fighting style version for SOR 4 Shiva. This may sound like a ton of issues but if you look carefully at it it's really just a case of tightening things up and smoothing the edges. I accept this is their first go so with SOR5 if it comes I expect it to be everything I expect from this franchise. I would rank SOR games as - SOR2 BK3 - SOR4 - SOR1 SOR3 SOR2 (PAL) And I would give SOR 4 a 4 out of 5.

I just couldn't get over how they expect a formula from 1992 to work in 2020. When they have SoR:Remake staring them in the face, showing them how to make a game have lasting appeal, cheaply, effectively... preemptively! It's a colossal failure. Edit: And I also really dislike how big-boned and meaty the women in the game look. It's a pretty conspicuous betrayal of the artstyle from the originals.

@@Asterra2 If SoR4 was anything like SoR: Remake, I would probably dislike it. I like SoR:R just like any other folk, but that game was literally just a compilation of stuff we saw before with some cutscenes and prototype stages thrown in. As good as it is, it would be a collossal failure as an actual sequel to a dormant franchise.

@@JennyTheNerdBat What do you mean by "anything like"? In that it was a compilation? I think it's pretty obvious that what I was referring to was the loot-collecting / goodies unlocking system that keeps you coming back for more. I mean, I like to think it's obvious I wasn't saying, "SoR4 disappointed me because *it wasn't literally just SoR1-3 in one package."* My point about the dubious female character design stands, though.

I'll never understand the SOR purists that defend the lack of running&dodge roll. I can understand characters like Floyd&Max not being able to roll or sprint because its trade off, you get power at the cost of speed. But then you get characters like Sor4 Axel&Blaze and it doesn't make sense for them to not be agile and also NOT having the advantage of Power. SO WTF? What is actually the point of playing as Blaze when she's walks as slow as Floyd? Its rather amusing that when you unlock Sor3 Axel&Blaze, they feel more modern than SOR4 Axel&Blaze. So, whenever that jumping kick guy hits me as Sor3 Axel, i don't get mad at the game for throwing an un-dodgeable attack at me because I CAN DODGE it. *"Mr and Ms Y are fine in themselves but they should have been the cover for a true boss who is behind it all they just don't have the "thing" that makes them believable head villains."* I mean, the artstyle is indicative of the fact that the creators aren't going for a gritty 90's feel. Everything's bright&lighthearted like a cartoon, the villains reflect that.

I was like you. I wasn't sure at first and took a good couple of hours for me to make my mind up. Its a different type of challenge and a slightly differnt way of playing. I do think there faults with it.The difficulty spikes with the bosses is wrong, I find the hardest boss to be the first boss, the others are fairly easy to deal with. I also find the juggling mechanic when you're hit very annoying. I've gone from full strength to dead in less than a second because I was juggled between two hard hitting characters just as a bomb goes off. With Axel I find the animation of his back punch takes too long, so if you are hitting a character in front of you and do a swift back punch to knock back someone coming from behind, the character in front of you comes out their stun status and starts pounding you. Not to mention if you are tapping attack and press back punch and continue tapping attack it sometimes does two back punches. But even with these annoyances, I keep coming back to it. I did a little stream of me doing arcade mode only to complete it and I enjoyed every minute of the 2 hours it took. Overall a very good game. P.S. The meat cleaver is an awesome throwing weapon. It goes through multiple enemies and talks about half their life.

look at the controls, you can change the input for back attack to a number of different ways. I use the classic jump+attack style. Also with the bosses it's the commissioner I find the hardest. I still just don't have a solid plan as to what to do with him. I also find the bosses move to fast and ALWAYS hover just outside your attack range on purpose, feels like you're just chasing them around more than actually fighting.

  • @StRoRo

I know about the control changes, and even when changed back to legacy so its jump and attack for back attack, it still sometimes does the double back again every now and then and its still too slow. I dont find the commisioner that hard. Just when you've attacked him just walkaway and avoid him for a few seconds and wait for him to come close to you.

Damn this is almost dead on my story with the game, the story disappointed me with its awful lack of context for many things, the complete exclusion of Skate(my favorite character) with no nods or reference to him whatsoever, and just the lack of any kind of urgency or danger, the Y twins look like anime kids and don't ever feel as imposing as their father. Story is not why you play beat em' ups or Streets of Rage at all typically, but the first two games did a great job setting tone and giving weight to your actions and a rewarding feeling at the end, just with a text crawl, a few pixel art photos and some beautiful ending tracks. And then Bare Knuckle 3 really upped the presentation as well as the stakes with a much more involved narrative that was told over round to round cutscenes, featured multiple outcomes and was no longer just about saving the city but having the team prevent a full scale nuclear war from taking place, by the end when Mr. X, who was now shown to be nothing more than a brain in a jar, is destroyed in an explosion, you get a credits sequence with some very nice hand drawn images of the cast returning to their ordinary lives, whilst the Streets of Rage main theme plays, that final shot especially with the entire cast from the series including Max Thunder, and Blaze wearing her SoR1 outfit just for old times sake, the "Thanks for playing, presented by SEGA" there was a great sense of finality to the series there, and for 26 years it was our ending and hit hard with me. To see 4 set the narrative as such an excuse plot or afterthought is unfortunately disappointing, especially after BK3's efforts to be greater. My first playthrough went exactly as yours did, I was beyond baffled by all the new feeling boss fights and all the super armor that accompanied them, I didn't have Skate(Cherry is cool, but just not the same) the game felt like 2, but without the oomph, and I didn't initially appreciate the music too much, the game also felt a little too short, despite being longer than the original games on the whole, it felt like stages didn't bother hanging around as long, but after the first playthrough and those retro character unlocks, it all started to click, playing the game on difficulties above normal, made action that much more engaging, I started to learn the combo system and scoring system and strive to improve, the combat unearths fighting game esque levels of depth the more you dig into it but never alters the control scheme from SoR2 + SoR3 meaning it's instantly accessible despite being extremely deep at the same time, and thanks to the scoring system you really are encouraged to play it however you desire, you aren't required to learn these high level techniques and set ups to get S ranks or do well, but at the same time doing so is rewarding all the same, there is a skill ceiling but it never becomes a barrier and I just don't know any other game in recent memory in which this can be said for. The stage designs and lengths I realized did a great job supporting the scoring system and allowing levels to stand out on their own as individual obstacle courses rather than part of a bundle package, but they work that way too, Arcade mode is actually my preferred way to play, but the game design here is brilliant and highly encourages replayability, heck even the new Battle mode is an absolute blast now the new layers to combat as well as the varied arenas have given me a surprising amount of time away from the main game, and thank heavens you can play every mode online with at least one other person. SoR4 is a brilliant iteration on arcade game design and very worthy of the legendary SoR/, that for some of us you just have to stick with and give it some time to click, It became my favorite modern beat em' up game after I gave it more time, surpassing the mighty "Fight n' Rage" Is it my favorite Streets of Rage? Nope I actually still prefer 2 and 3, but this game does a fantastic job iterating on those two games and taking the series into the modern age without losing itself at all, turned out much better than I could've hoped for, I'm just glad I wasn't the only one with these gripes or concerns initially, I expected to instantly love the game based on reactions from others pre release.

Kim, two things to keep in mind. You might've figured this out by now, so if so, I apologize. First, you can tech knockdowns as well as throws. Second, specials are useful now, if you land damage after connecting with one, you get back the health it took to execute it. Oh, and after playing 4, I went back and played 2. It was so slow and ponderous that I really appreciate what Guard Crush did with this one. To me, it's the best in the series because it extended what needed extending while leaving alone what didn't. Everyone's got favourite in the series. The great thing is, though, There's not a bad game in the series. I'll go to bat for this one, but anyone that prefers the older ones is totally right to. I have never liked the art style and I can't believe that aspect is getting so much praise. And the backwards step for gameplay is a let down also, as well as the utterly forgettable music. I didn't absolutely hate it, but after spending many hours with it upfront, I honestly don't know if I'll ever even play it again, I have no desire to pick it up anymore. @@OGeffects it's the juggling mechanic. That makes the super armor on enemies necessary or at least more important than it would have been in the old days. There are other things like the surprising, to me anyway, amount of enemies that yeet themselves at you and resist flinching at the same time. Combined with yourself being jugglable, the inability to interrupt your attacks with defense specials, and you have a lot of situations that will devastate your hp with a single oops. There are a few things in the game that arnt so much corny as they are.. Stupid on purpose or self mocking. The candy named biker girls. Beyonce and rihana being a boss duo that alternate super armored aoe attacks you just gotta walk away from. I like the game. It also pisses me off. Axel, take off your stupid shirt belt. I totally understand your initial feeling, Kim. ^^ On my first playthrough, I was having some trouble adapting to the new gameplay, it didn't feel as flowing as SOR2 and I hated the new invincibility frames a lot of characters have. But by the end of the playthrough I was already feeling at home with the new quirks, and the game started to change from alright to amazing. I realized that the new gameplay is kinda like the gameplay loop in Doom Eternal: it forces you to play a certain way, so it doesn't feel as free flow as previous titles. But the gameplay is very rewarding indeed, and with all the added replay value, I don't see myself stop playing it in the near future. A wonderful beat'em up, a real tribute to the past but a beast on its own. Still not sure I like it as much as SOR2, but it's certainly very high up there on my favorite beat'em ups list :D

The unlockable characters are sadly broken. They have spamable moves full of Invulnerable frames. All of the regular characters also have somewhat easy infinite combos thanks to the juggle and wall bounce systems (an easy fix will be to remove the hurtbox from airbrone enemies after a certain amount of hits) It's a great game but I hope the developers look into things like this for a possible sequel or patch the current game.

Top rate journalism here kim, unbiased, impartial, analytical and honest. Feel for you, after such a long wait as a series fan, feeling rather underwhelmed by the game. Maybe expectation managment is hard to control in the face of such releases, that play directly into highly valued nostalgia, its not the mid 90s anymore sadly, our tastes and experiences in life since then surely change our view of a wide range of assests including videogames. The old games were awesome at the time, this is nostalgia first, game second somewhat. Personally i love this, once the nostalgia hit and weight of expectation dies down SOR 4 will find its place in the lexicon quite comfortably. Ace game, ace video and review too. FFVII remasteted too, a real windfall of kim faves coming back to the forefront!

Good review. I liked the game after the first playthrough but didn't love it due to similar reasons, like the end build-up and bosses being a bit anti-climactic, the music being decent but not blowing me away upon the first listen through and some repeat/slightly disappointing bosses. But like you, after further playing I've really come to appreciate the game; the music can be different but still great, the repeat playthroughs on different characters to get a better rank or just to beat it on higher difficulty on one credit is fun. Some mechanics can be annoying at times and certain enemies - I'm looking at you Donavan, you pipe wielding, uppercutting and poke-jabbing git you - they do add to the challenge, if a bit unfair at times. One of the devs said they originally wanted to add another level too and more animations but it sounds like they ran out of time, as they only had one main guy to do most of the character animation work (reason for repeat bosses perhaps?) - hopefully they'll make a few balance tweaks later and add some nice DLC content later down the line to really polish things up and flesh it out fully, but overall I think it's better than we could have hoped to get these days.

It's a respectable attempt by a new developer to capture what made SOR so loved, while trying to modernize it as much as possible after 26 bloody years. It wasn't perfectly done, but it's a stupidly difficult task to keep the original fan base happy and bring in new people to an arcade style game. The updated art style is very cool, if not a bit too simple on the animation. The game mechanics work well enough. The soundtrack is enjoyable. Nice blend of nostalgia and advancement. Co-op is great fun. It's a solid 8/10. A great addition to an iconic franchise and it's priced reasonably well at £20-ish.

I was upset at first when i couldn't pick up weapons but i quickly found that was mapped to another button. Yea i was about to switch it back but if you think about it the parts that were frustrating in the older game were areas where you were surrounded and items were dropped and you couldn't attack because your character would alternate weapons. This felt at least like A SOLUTION and maybe i felt it gave at least some thought to updating the mechanics. But yea im loving the game so far

When it was first shown the art style worried me, and I'll say that is on me because it was different. I wanted to support it if only to show SEGA that I want this series to return. I enjoyed playing it on my first go, but there are frustrations such as enemies having invincibility stints and the lack of a guard crush, I'm looking at you Pheasant! I do still feel that I'd like it more if the Streets of Rage 4 characters had the run and roll of SOR3 or Adam's sidestep, but I do think that they probably had their reasons for not doing that. I see that like me, Streets of Rage 2 has taught you to not use the specials so well that I tend to just forget I can do them. They tried to get Joe Musashi as a character but SEGA said no, Sketch Turner would be an awesome fit for the game, but I get the feeling that we can realistically only hope for playable Estel, Max and Shiva. I can live with that, I enjoyed the honest review on the game, yours is the first I've watched. Fingers crossed for them to add to the game.

I would've also liked characters from other SEGA IPs to be in this game, but a recent interview with SOR4 Game Designer Jordi Asensio had him saying that they wanted to put Shinobi's Joe Musashi into the game, but SEGA rejected the idea because due to SEGA's loose corporate structure makes it hard to put stuff from one IP into another beyond a cameo, even if both are owned by SEGA, without stepping on someone's Copyright/Royalty toes. Which is a shame, I would've liked to play as Tyris Flare from Golden Axe, Knuckles (as a nod to that Sonic & Knuckles/SOR 'docking' Rumor), Alys or Rika from Phantasy Star, and of course Joe Musashi.

Like here for instance- it sounds to me like the "problem" is that some game designer actually got a good deal that respects their work and contributions... but that also means that a feature that'd be cool for a player isn't possible because it'd mean someone at a highet level would have to write a royalty check and we all know how allergic management in companies are to THAT....

This game is great and I loved it, the problem is that it is a little repititious. There are three playthrough modes, and they all contain the same exact levels and enemies. If you beat one of these modes, the other two modes dont have much else to offer other than difficulty. They also dont use all of the SOR enemies. Some levels repeat bosses which baffled me since there are so many other classic enemies they could have used. There are a lot of characters to unlock, but again, youll be playing the same exact levels over and over again to unlock them. I am in no way saying this is not a good game, It was great and offered a ton of fun, but it could have and should have been so much more. Its an aspect of the game that really stands out and youll have to play it to understand what Im talking about. It was well worth the money and youll love it.....for about a week. And sometimes it seems like they tease you by making you think there are more unlockables than there actually is. Hopefully there will be a SOR 5 that will introduce more of the classic enemies and new characters as well. Still, for the price, it is a great game and I highly recommend it if youre a SOR fan.

Man I gotta disagree on the subject of whether or not a face button dedicated to picking up items is justified or not. One of my VERY FEW issues with OG SOR games and Streets of Rage Remake was with the attack button being the pick up button. Actually, that was my BIGGEST problem with traditional Streets of Rage. Every other problem I've ever had with SOR is fucking petty in comparison. It fucking KILLED ME (often literally) to be in the heat of battle and having to fucking tip toe around food I didn't need yet or was saving for my partner so I wouldn't accidentally use/waste it. Or the ground is just fucking LITTERED with weapons I don't want anything to do with so I'm trying to fight the many men who wish death upon me (blood in my eyes dawg and I can't see) but instead I accidentally pick up some piece of shit bottle or knife and in that split second I'm not punching while grabbing that goddamn thing, I get fucking ROCKED from all sides by enemies all because ATTACK AND PICK UP ARE THE SAME FUCKING BUTTON! COCK! The very first thing I did in the first 2.45 seconds of gameplay was open the options menu and change those wonky fucking controls they have configured by default. SOR has had the same, perfectly fine fucking controls for almost thirty years and they needlessly changed it to no benefit whatsoever. Anyways, the only change I agreed with was a dedicated pick up/throw button. That was a fucking godsend. I contemplated mapping it to attack for old time's sake but I stopped myself and I'm never looking back. Going back to the OG SOR games is going to severely fuck me up from now on though but I fully accept these inevitable future consequences and their negative effects. It's a good problem to have, given the circumstances. XD

It's a love letter to the genre, and it's well intentioned and very well made, but it's safe, unoriginal, and maybe too much like the second game. The problem with Streets of Rage 2 is that it's already been made, and we've already had that wow factor. Streets of Rage 4 is money for old rope with a bit of added glitter. I wasn't liking the new art style since the reveal and I still don't. I think some of the unused designs, particularly those without the thick, black outlines look much better. And I didn't like some of the elements of the character designs, and I thought Cherry wasn't a very good design overall. But I give the developer credit for including a lot of unlockable content and options. In that way, at least, it shows that the developer did care about this project during development. It's baffling to me that they didn't promote the full retro graphic modes before release -- their retro trailer only showed the old characters on the standard backgrounds. I like the look of the game much more with the full retro graphic filters. Finding out about those has made me interested in this game again, and I will likely look into it down the line. I do remain skeptical of the proclamations that this is the best beat-em-up ever or that it's the best in the series. I'm quite familiar with this genre, which is my favorite style, so I know what I like in these games, and many of the reviews saying this is the best of the style haven't convinced me they know the genre well enough to be trusted. However, when I do get around to playing it, and I'm looking forward to it somewhat, perhaps it will live up to those assertions of it being the best. That would be fine with me.

Let me start off my saying I loved SoR 2, like many I think it's the best Genesis/MD game ever made. I thought the original was a bit generic and dull aside from the music, but I still enjoyed that one. SoR3, I appreciated the new moves and sort of leveling system, but the graphics were a small step back from 2 and the soundtrack was a huge step back from both 1 and 2. Now, with all that out of the way... I have to say I am not a fan of Streets of Rage 4 and all the love being heaped upon this game is absolutely mind boggling to me. I wanted to love SoR 4 as much as any Sega and SoR fan, but I don't. I hate the art style, the music, while not bad, is utterly generic and forgettable, the gameplay is in many ways a step back from SoR 3, and I found that I really wasn't enjoying playing it, despite having spent probably 30ish hours on it both solo and with a friend and fellow SoR fan online and after having unlocked almost everything. Lots of people love this game, I get it and that's fine. I'm not going to tell people they're wrong for liking a game. For me personally though, I have to say, while can appreciate the work that went into it and that it's brought joy to a lot of gamers, I'm probably done with SoR 4 at this point and if they do a sequel that resembles this one, I think I'm going to tap out. I thought spending more time with the game would cause it to grow on me as some of you have said it did for you. For me it had the opposite effect. The more I played it, the less I found myself enjoying it. And as I feel right now, I doubt I will ever have the urge to play it again.

Let's face it, it can't help but be an idiotic genre to begin with. A genre that should, at least, demand an imaginative aesthetic and multiple branching paths. I don't think that I have ever before witnessed such a perfect storm, in which a game, so desperate to fit the bill, appearing as a soulless ironic facsimile of a thing long gone, is being met by an audience which would seemingly go to almost any lengths to like it. It has almost become a cliche now to state that one was left cold and didn't actually like the game upon the first play through, however, after a Jack and Coke, and playing the game in black and white, whilst standing on their head, with the fridge door left open, they finally started to 'get it'. Well, I am out-numbered at the mo, but let's see if this wet fish of a release stands the test of time.

The inclusion of modern Dance music has turned me off. I cannot stand EDM and the like. 90's Dance > everything else.
