    I want to thank you for your time and videos on tuning tunnel ram setups..... I've been running a tunnel ram on a sbc for 20+ years. I was lucky enough to have caught your first video on this subject and consequently made my own uni- syn tool as per your video. I must say I find it a invaluable tool to aid in tuning my own engine. I wish I would have had this tool 20 years earlier to make my life easier. I know now that my carburetors are in perfect balance ! Thanks again for sharing.....

    Andy I'm a mechanic that did his apprenticeship at a Merc-Benz dealership and I recognized that West German carb synchronizer the moment it came out. Quite a few inline 6 Benzes from the early to mid 1970s had 2x 2bbl Solex carbs just before fuel injection became standard fitment on some models. Sometimes they had a single 4bbl Solex that gave no end of trouble. Anyway they used 2 of them to sync the carbs. They had one of those huge stupid Sun oscilloscopes and diagnostic stations in very prominent view of the customer waiting lounge. Re stuck at WOT, at that MB dealership I potentially did one of the most stupid things but I did get away with it. I floored a 300SEL 6.3 in our car park. They have mechanical fuel injection with an inline jerk type fuel injection pump designed for a Diesel as standard fitment. It's all controlled by linkages and rods including to a throttle butterfly valve. They are prone to this sort of thing. Usually take off in 2nd gear and only go into 1st when you hit kickdown. Well I hit kickdown and it stuck wide open and took off. Even with both feet on the brakes these was no stopping it. It took off through the car park and at the end there was a dip with and then narrow driveway at an awkward angle that you had to take with care so you didn't scrape the wall of the adjoining building. A dumpster sat right at that driveway. Somehow I missed the dumpster and it went down the dip and I didn't even scrape the wall. I remembered to hit the key and it stopped with a screech. You just reminded me of that day. I was still a first year apprentice. What a stupid thing to do.

    @@UnityMotorSportsGarage yes a forgotten tool. Back in 1964 our 62 Sunliner 390-401 hp we picked up 2 tens. We used to lash hot and idling which was better by 2 tens over cold lash. Then bought the P&G tool man it was $35.00 back then. But made a big difference as we where over 4000#’s but ran 13.18@104-5 that car surprised many people. I love your channel you do a great job teaching n sharing. Mike

    Andy, If your carb has a non-ported vacuum port (continuous vacuum), you can use a couple of vacuum gauges to set them. On each carb come off of the non-ported port to an aquarium single line flow valve to a gauge.connect the gauges. Use the aquarium flow valve to dampen any fluctuations in the gauge needle. I've got a pair of Auto Meter "MPG" gauges that I use which I picked up at a garage sale.

    Perfect timing! My neighbor is resurrecting his father's old El Camino gasser with a 454 tunnel ram set up with 2 dumper carbs. He believes it has the l88 cam in it. It is up and running good but not great bc those carbs don't have power valves. We are thinking about removing the original metering blocks and replace them with blocks with a power valve. After that the fun begins...I have a kit to install brass set screws into blocks for tuning iacr and pvcr. After installing an afr gauge we hopefully can start tuning to make the engine a little more street friendly.

    Every time I watch one of your tunnel ram videos, I think I need a tunnel ram. For my use a long cross ram like Chrysler used in the early 60s might be better, 31 inch runners for low end torque. Just cant imagine how that'd work in a Minnesota winter. 😆

    You are right! What I have found is even though you may have both idle screws adjusted the same the results will vary due to how the throttle blades are placed in the bore but when you get it right the sound of the engine will actually change it will become smoother Andy

    I would add that part throttle should be checked for equal flow as well. Idling equalized won’t insure the linkage is equal also. I like a smooth tip in.

  • @UnityMotorSportsGarage

    @UnityMotorSportsGarage

    5 ай бұрын

    You can check it but normally if the linkage is right at idle and pulls equal the throttle blades should be at the same point in the transition slot IF not that would mean that the throttle blades aren't installed the same in the carbs Thanks for watching Andy

    @UnityMotorSportsGarage exactly. One of the first things I do when prepping the base of a carb is stick it up in the ceiling light and compare the amount of light leaking around the butterflies. They can be tweaked some to even them out. But in the end they are never exactly the same.
