I rescued a one-year-old street dog, a female who was 20 lbs underweight. She's been with me for 11 years now and I can't imagine life without her. She got me through the caring and death of my mom, through Covid, and now is getting me through my fight with leukemia. She makes me laugh every day and keeps me going through our daily routine of long walks in the woods and all the little things that happen in a day. She's my absolute best friend and companion. There is a reason why god is dog spelled backwards.

It is true, some people are on another level of rejecting love. My wife was raised with dogs in the family but she never learned how to care, train or interact properly with an animal. Her foundation is that she can live without giving love to an animal on any level. The simple point is that she is finally enjoying going to the park with Dakota who gives her more enjoyment while at the park. This translates to her engaging with me her husband. She is simple minded about her interactions with life and people around her. Dakota has made her a better person.

As someone who has through the years adopted 5 greyhounds from the track, my answer to the question was “take over the sofa.” The sofa is the greyhound’s natural habitat. Even if they’ve never seen one before, they know this upon first sight. Greyhounds are greyt family members, I’m glad you found your boy.

Yes, and all greyhounds , all of them need at least 2-3 days to learn what to do with these strange things the humans call stairs. 😊. All looove to run and do it so graciously and full of joy. It is joyful for us to watch them run.. . All are part human, part dolphin, part cat and the dog part is made of 2 : first the appetite and , second, that sweet understanding of human need and unlimited love for his family. We adopted to ex racers . Unfortunately they do not live over 13 years. Heartbreaking. Unfortunately a lot of those places use drugs which later cause cancer. In my opinion the races should be outlawed , so the whole puppy mills. Shelters are overflowing, for Goodness sake! I remember telling some lady that after we adopted the first greyhound that for the first time in my life I really fell in love. Then I said “why men can’t be like that”. The lady (RIP) rightly corrected me saying that it is unfair to compare a human with a dog. Dogs are always better by nature. Yepppo!

I love these stories about abandoned dogs finding love - I wish it could be so for all! I wrestle with the fact that people can abandon dogs, throw them out like a worn-out shoe. Such people defy being human because of their lack of compassion. I've been lucky enough to foster several retired racing Greyhounds in my life including one, named Drake, who was a total foster failure from the first time I laid eyes on him ( really, who was I kidding? 😁). They are truly incredible dogs. The very mixture of awe-inspiring athleticism, gentle affection, stoic elegance...interspersed with the most ridiculously adorable "derp" moments ever! And the stair thing? Yeah, totally. Had to teach ALL of them how to get up and down them, as well as having to put black electrical tape on both the sliding glass doors *and* the screen doors at their eye level for the first week, so they wouldn't run right smack into them! They do learn very quickly, though...especially that the "big people bed" is THE comfiest napping place. 🐶💖

Once I got my first greyhound 17 years ago, I don't think I'll ever get another breed. At an event at our state fair grounds, there was a rescue group with retired greyhounds from the Mexican race tracks. I absolutely fell in love with the dogs. They were so gentle and sweet. The rescue group explained they're basically couch potatoes. They DO need a good run, but then they're just happy to stretch out next to you and cuddle. I didn't go home with one due to cats at home, but the thought has never left my head to eventually adopt one.

@@conmckfly what about becoming a foster parent to a greyhound? There are greys that are ok with cats, about 50% are. And there are always greys who have lived with cats & need foster care. Check with them... There are many, many greyhound rescues. I have adopted 2 who I fostered but couldn't let go of. Now, I'm down to 1 nine year old lady greyhound. The greyhound in my picture was my ❤️. Tiger was my first greyhound. I lost him October 16, 2016. It still feels like yesterday. I have adopted a total of 4 grey's and fostered too many to count.... I think it's over 50. Some were a few days and 1 I had almost a year. He was hard to let go but we knew he wasn't right for us and just when I was about to cave in and adopt him the perfect family came along and he's with his family with 6 kids... Which was exactly what he needed. Don't discount them because of your cats. Good luck 🤞🏻

@@conmckfly just remember that a "good run" for most greyhounds is a lap or 2 around your back yard. As they get older, those sprints will become less and less. I've had many who rarely wish to walk much and are quite content to have a sniff and wander around the back yard, go pee and poo and they're done until the next time they've eaten. My 9 yr old girl will go zip around about once a week and perhaps has the spinnies (where she spins round and round) for a few minutes then play bows, barks once or twice and then leaps off our 3 foot high retaining wall and zips back inside for a drink of water and a nap. I do hope you get to adopt one someday.

The sweetest, smartest, most loving dog I ever had was a "recycled racer." Her name was Grace. I had her for 10 beautiful years and she never barked once. While racing, they live in crates stacked high atop each other with ramps, so they have never used stairs. They have never had a toy. They are let out of their crates to pee on the "caretakers'" time schedule, so are not housebroken when you adopt, but they are wicked smart and learn very fast! They eat from huge community troughs so have never had their own food or water dish. It broke my heart. Her only goal in the last years of her life was to make me happy. I hope I made her just as happy. I miss her every day.

I love people who love animals ❤️, because you know for sure they are really good people. I have an adopted dog who was rescued from the streets by a rescue center in the town I live in. I feel about her the way this couple feel about their dog. And to have her flown from Spain is amazing and shows what really great people they are! I wish everyone could love dogs the way all of us do! They are wonderful companions with so much love to give!

@@morbidmanmusic Like my Labs then, most sporting breeds love to please. Its a huge help in training them. Found my little terrier mix to be the hardest to train and my Australian Shepherd the easiest. My hunting Labs in between. My girl Layla took a while, she was very easily over stimulated while hunting. My Aussie Tori is 14 now, but when she was in her prime, she was the quickest herder I have seen. And she trained herself to herd. She herded baby quail, sheep, steer and chickens. I took her to a family friend's farm, and she just went at it with no training. She had some learning to do, but once she figured out the animal, she was trying to herd, it was over.

For both humans and dogs, recovering from stress and anxiety does require lots of sleep. This lady clearly noticed that on the first night this dog entered the house. Our pets need us to be like this when we take care of them. In return, they do learn to be perceptive of your pain and stress as well as time passes.
