A buddy of mine owns an auto shop, and he adopted two stray cats that started hanging around. They entertain customers, improve the moral of employees, and are the best method of pest control out there. The place is along a creek, so mice used to be a real problem.

About thirty years ago, I worked as a civilian on Kirtland AFB in Albuquerque. Our division had a facility out in the boonies on the other side of the airstrip that was basically a converted warehouse. When we first acquired the building, we learned that field mice and rats were a major problem; they kept causing problems by eating up the insulation behind instrument racks, as well as leaving droppings everywhere. Then one day, a stray cat showed up, and it was like having a New Sheriff in Town. The cat would leave dead rodents in prominent locations as if to say, "I caught another one!" Not long after showing up, the cat had cleaned the area of rodents, but definitely wanted to stick around. One of the technicians and a secretary started feeding him, and a machinist made a house for him. Eventually, the Area Commander approved a "billet" for the cat, and his food and vet visits were added to the facility's budget! I left Albuquerque about a year later, but when I went back for a get-together six or seven years later, my former colleagues confirmed that "Chuck" (after "Chuck Yeager") was still on the payroll. 😊

@@catc8927 He did! It was Chuck's incredible effectiveness that convinced the Area Commander to keep him around (BTW, only the men in the unit called our Officer in charge of Rodent Control "Chuck;" the women usually called him "Charlie" 😊). In all honesty, the commander was a very pragmatic guy, and he was just glad to have found such a simple solution to what had started out as an aggravating problem. Compounding the problem for the commander (and us) was the fact that the hanta virus back then was suddenly in the news a lot in New Mexico, and it was already suspected that the virus is spread by desert rodents through their droppings (this later was proven to be the case). So Chuck (or Charlie) was both an SP (Security Patrol) officer and a HaS (Health and Safety) officer!

I was 22 and in the police academy, poor as could be, and I visited my parents one night and I found this beautiful tuxedo kitten all alone under the tire of a car. I scooped her up and took her home and told my roommate that we now have a cat. She was very sick and only 4 weeks old. We both borrowed money from our parents to pay for her vet bills and stayed up with her many nights to nurse her to health. She lived for 21 years and was with me through my single years, marriage and children. She died in 2018 and I miss her every day. RIP Bobo and thank you for everything! I had strays coming to my apartment building and I would give them food and water, but some of them were feral. One day I was leaving and a new younger male showed up. He had a little bit of a eye infection and was skinny. Although cautious he was friendly and actually laid down and showed me his belly after I talked to him. I gave him some food and water and he watched me leave. I felt bad. I decided if he came back I might take him in. When I came home the next day he was there. I brought him in and took him to the vet to get fixed and his shots. It has been a year now and he's slept by my side every night since.

This is the thing about cats. It is almost mystical how they just show up one day out of nowhere and turn out to be the best thing that ever happened to you. My sweet old boy who passed in October was that way-he just appeared one day years ago as a fully grown adult and stayed with me for ten more wonderful years. While I was still grieving his passing terribly, about a month after, a lone kitten showed up and I ended up keeping him. He's helped me through the loss and feels like an old friend already and spookily, even has a lot of the same habits as my kitty who passed. Any time a cat comes to you, embrace it. It's special.

I worked at a cabinet manufacturing company and we had an office cat to take care of the mouse problem. She was this beautiful calico cat and she would sleep on my inbox during the day as I worked. When she was little I brought her home every night. As she got older, she stayed in the shop, and every morning I'd have 2-5 "gifts" from her on or near my desk. On holidays I'd bring her home with me. She and my other cats got along very well. When I left the company, I took her with me. I couldn't bear to be without her. She lived for almost 16 years, and was a great companion. Thanks for sharing your story. As I'm writing this, one of my cats is sitting here with me.
