For the record: both Tom and Paul showed up at the official Jeopardy! message boards and explained what happened. Paul had placed his hand on the light pen screen, and as a result, the light pen failed to write (something the producers had warned). But Alex gave him extra time, when the rules say if the light pen fails, go straight for the notecard. After TPTB discussed what happened, they decided to make both cochampions. Tom won that came and the game after that.

J-archive.cm says the electronic pen malfunction that had Paul Thomas writing his correct Final Jeopardy “Lafayette” response on a card was “Jeopardy!” ep. #5454, airing 5/1/08-with Thomas competing against Tom Morris and Melanie Harrington. In 2012, the Raleigh,NC TV market had WTVD (ABC 11) airing “Jeopardy!” at 7:00 PM opposite a local newscast on WNCN (NBC 17), sometimes anchored by Melanie Sanders. Contestants on ep. # 5452, airing 4/29/01, were Tom Morris, Ric Leach and Gilah Pomeranz
