No matter if the character is human or inhuman what matters is the creativity of the backstory writer not some arbitrary racial bonus to backstory that I can’t find in any of my books!

My experience with my group of players is the more limited we are in choices of what we can be the more creative we need to be with backstory. So if all of us are forced to be human fighters i bet all of them will be very different with backstory and specialization and we can get group which fill all roles and functions in group. less limits often lead to laziness and more stereo types.

Bottom tier roleplay: Play an exotic race or class to make character interesting. Probably not 3 dimensional personality or interesting background. Middle tier roleplay: Play a common race and class to force yourself to make them interesting through background and personality instead of using a crutch. Top tier roleplay: Be able to play an exotic race or class and still have an interesting background and fully fleshed out personality, with added flare of the exotic. That's my thoughts.

Imo, the pregnancy thing is, in most cases, just to do with control and dominance over the player. PC's child is an NPC that is closely linked to the PC and the player, which allows the DM to more effectively target them. "Don't annoy me or I'll have your child kidnapped" would be a soft example, but knowing toxic DMs it would probably be more let's say "hardcore". The child NPC can be used to railroad a player or party: "as you pack up to leave, your daughter enters asking you whether you'll be at her play, however tears begin to well up in her eyes as she sees your bags". Control all around, except for the occasions when it's more the DM's uhm you know 🥵🥵🍆 as well. Edit Tbh this is a very weirdly hopeful view on this. I really want the NSFW side of this to be the majority for my own sanity.

DM in the first story reminds me of quite a few people I ran into who swore up and down and were adamantly serious that either they were the reincarnation of Dracula, were direct descendents of Dracula, and/or Dracula was one of the souls who lingered around them and sometimes possessed them. Whew I used to hang out with some weird people

A friend of mine was heavy into the ren faire scene and knew a vampire who worked for the NSA, a werewolf, and a fae trapped in a human body. I kinda wanted to meet these people and learn more about what made them tick. Was it power fantasy? Avoidance of something in reality? You're a vampire and a werewolf, so I'll be a fae so I can be part of the group? Something else? Never got the chance, but that might be a good thing.

WRT the second story: I always get instantly suspicious whenever someone describes themselves or others as chaotic, as though that's a positive thing. All too often, "chaotic" people are messy and unreliable at best, or actively malicious at worst, and either way, they shouldn't be encouraged. The DM seems like the former: someone who is utterly disorganized and wishy-washy, but tries to disguise it behind a veneer of social acceptability. The Problem is the latter: an actively terrible person trying to hide their Genuine Nazi Sympathies behind a thin veneer of detached irony. And unfortunately, the DM facilitated the Problem by not having enough of a grip on the situation to kick him the moment he started suggesting they join with the villains.

I don't have such great horror stories myself. I live in Germany and when you play online here, it's like almost everyone has never heard of session zero or wants to do one. That is unnecessary and a waste of time, they say. And when I want to do one, everyone is irritated. Rather, the corresponding game leader would like to let everything run over him, like a node. They prefer that everyone builds a character without knowing what the others are playing and if there are duplications, you have to build a new character without knowing what the others are playing, try and error. They also don't want to talk about how to play or what to expect or how far certain content is played out. Rather, it is done in such a way that you randomly get any people in the group and as long as players lose and get new ones, until purely by chance a group comes together, which does not separate after 2 sessions again. The separates then after 5 sessions. And if you manage five sessions, you've already played for a really long time.

I had a DM do the whole 'not tell the players about the setting' thing once. He called his world "Low Magic" several sessions after the start and most of us had some sort of spellcasting in our class. Of course, his setting didn't support this assertion either when he had drow, riding black dragons, dropping wands of Delayed Blast Fireball (basically magical dynamite) on towns and villages.

  • @ultimateninjaboi

@@ArawnNox i had a game where the DM made it seem like pretty standard, vaguely Renaissance high fantasy. Ie, usual D&D fare, with firearms being around enough that average people wouldnt be confused by their existence (i was a wizard gunslinger, combo). Between the fact that DM constantly described all devices/tech/objects without saying what they were "for dramatic effect," and the fact that we were starting out WAY out in the countryside, hiding from the evil empire of the campaign... each session turned into "oh... ok. Its a later time period than we thought." Like... if it had been "oh, were in the age of exploration, not the Renaissance," that would be fair enough. IT WAS FANTASY WORLD WAR 2. BY SESSION FOUR WE WERE DESTROYING AN IMPERIAL (read Nazi) LABORATORY THAT WAS DOING LATE-40S DEMON CORE EXPERIMENTS.

Regarding the pregnancy thing, I can think of two different explanations: the first is that, back in the day, there was an unofficial sourcebook called the Book of Unlawful Carnal Knowledge or something like that. Basically a collection of rules and tables for NSFW stuff in DnD. It went into great detail on pregnancy in particular. (Favorite tidbit: mothers are eligible for an innate ability called "The Look", which affects their children akin to a cleric turning undead. :) ) I can easily see some horny teen DM- or horny DM with the mind of a teen- getting ahold of this and thinking it will make his game more mature and "realistic". It's generally the opposite- better men then I have noted that only children are obsessed with being adult. (Which kinda explains the second story too, come to think.) The other possible explanation is that it's just general cultural shifts. As a lifelong pregnancy fetishist, I can tell you that the fetish has only gotten more prominent in the NSFW space over time. it used to be a very weird little niche, now pretty much any pornsite you'll go to will have a tag with thousands of works on it. Why this is, I don't know. If I had to guess, I would say it's a product of the prominence of birth control, plus post-boomer generations turning away from having large families and starting them young. As a general rule, the less common something is, the more meaning becomes attached to it.

I don't see a problem with someone playing as a nazi in an RPG as long as everyone is on board with it. I've grown up defending video games where you could rip someone's spine out, acquire services from a prostitute only to kill her and take your money back, or even blow up the world. Whether it is video games or TTRPGs, they can be a safe outlet for these dark fantasies that no one in their right mind would ever actually do or endorse. There is a big but here. TTRPGs are a collaborative storytelling effort. That means that if someone at the table is uncomfortable with a subject matter, compromises must be made. There are lines that shouldn't be crossed unless everyone is on the same page. Especially after Charlottesville, I can understand Nazis being a very uncomfortable subject for many people. Heck, seeing that made Pewdiepie step back and say he wasn't going to make any more Nazi jokes.

The character of the cast thankfully have some of the things to show that they are a little bit fucked in the head. So with the less than ideal company along with the campaign I can't believe this quote is applicable to anything, "You didn't want this, you didn't ask for this but suddenly you're a n*youtube have mercy*azi"

Pregnancy is a fetish that comes in many forms. Fetishes back then are, and to some extent to this day, a very taboo subject where it isn't brought up in the most liberal sex-ed classes. That tends to lead to awkward situations like in the story where you don't know how to express the kink without making others uncomfortable. Been there; done that. It's why I think there should be discussions about kinks.

Like, my games we play with mature adult players, adult content will happen, we fade to black and call it good. If at any point players go "hey what if..." then I'd be like, alright lets roll some dice on it otherwise I really don't think of it as an option unless my earlier statement becomes a viable option

idk 2nd story I'm conflicted. on the one hand they really should've told OP like anything about what was gonna happen her and awful guys style of dmin of just doing random shit he thinks is funny or weird but on the other like I feel OP is kinda unfairly trying to make these guys seem like "evil ignorant right wing racists!!!" when it just seems like a friend group doing a dumb bit together they got left out of the loop on what the fuck was happening. which again them not being told isn't their fault, someone shouldve told them anything. However I really don't look like how they're trying to paint these guys, especially "awful" feels like that name is unfair to a guy just doing an edgy bit

While this is positively ancient I will say that one thing about second hand information is that you don't know the exact details of a lot of these pregnancy situations. I will say that on the occasions when sex and such come up in my game I simply handwave the issue of pregnancy unless it's desired by the players involved and also makes sense (not a casual fling) as I simply assume there are contraceptive herbs out there for those who want them, and in some cases depending on the level of magic in the campaign allow there to be spells that easily deal with things the a woman's cycle or whatever as a simply way of dealing with the occasional question of those kinds of biological issues that derive if it's ever thought about. That said, one thing I will point out is that a lot of time when thing like pregnancy or biological issues (which weren't covered here) are brought up, the intent is exactly the opposite of fetishistic. See, in some groups there are recurring problems with dudes who make these super-hot female characters and then want to run around having casual relations with everyone and everything, which is annoying even in a game that allows a lot of such content. Typically there is little thought about it, or even understanding, as the player might have little or no sexual experience which is why they are doing this to begin with. Typically such nods to reality can toss a bucket of cold water on the situation and at least get them to think about the character more reasonably, though I personally do not do this. It should also be noted that pregnancy, is a logical repercussion from sex. The GM bringing this up can also have the same impact on say the typical overly romantic super charismatic male character when they get reminded that pretty much banging every girl they run into is likely going to result in a lot of fatherless children. Now sure, there are fantasy stereotypes about this kind of thing, but it's not generally portrayed as being a good thing, and for those of us with a modern outlook we typically see the problems. Whether conception happens or not, the reminder that the character might unexpectedly have to become a father, or otherwise become a terrible person for running off without a thought, can in some cases mitigate the behavior when you don't want to outright ban it, typically because it's become excessive at the current level, not that you want it entirely removed. As I said, I don't handle it that way typically when I have games that allow this kind of stuff, but I know GMs who have used this technique. I know one female GM a few years ago I was playing with online (which is rare as I'm almost a forever GM) who thought I might have "issues" as I was playing pretty much all female characters which is not unusual online as I tend not to do it in person which as the majority of my gaming experience. She tried to do something vaguely similar with me, until I talked to her a big, and she was also oddly surprised at the way I handled such a thing and figured out what her intent was. We wound up not having any issues, but that's a whole story unto itself that would be a giant text wall on it's own.

I'm so tired of GMs saying "Roll for pregnancy." Hasn't happened in years, but ugh. I think it goes with the whole "punishing women for having sex" thing... though the first time it happened to a character of mine, no sex was involved. villain just magically impregnated her.

For the pregnancy thing kinks aside in 3rd (or 3.5 I forget) there was a third party book called the book of erotic fantasies (For a 3rd part supplement it was actually really well put together) that had lots of rules involving sex, pregnancy times, cross species sucessrates, other taboo things, spells, equipment ect. And at the time players/gms who got their hands on it all wanted to use it in some way. The book is still in high demand while a pdf version can run you about 25 bucks (including tax) finding a physical second hand copy of the book (at the time of this comment) can run you up to 400 bucks (not includedtax). Every campaign I've been in where the gm didn't go into detail about this book and how much of it they were using upfront has been an awful canpaign

Interesting, you moved house again. Do you live with Baba Yaga or Carl from Up, or are you from Laputa or Tortuga? Making a bit of a joke, but I do like your videos as I take horror stories to see what to avoid when I DM. Like unwanted pregnancy, I will handle that as a non-player character who was wronged by a villain or go Alien on a non-player character as long as my players are ok with it as I always take reviews from my players and don't go into the nitty gritty details unless they want to explore it more, as my players liberated and befriended a couple of beastfolk and a dragon who were enslaved by a circus slaver nation who think that all beastfolk and non humanoid sentient species are nothing more than animals that need to be tamed. One of the two beastfolk protected the other beastfolk from unwanted advances by using themselves as a "shield" and having the other one go into true beast mode to intimidate any would be unwanted advances, as the other one was deaf and could only communicate by lip reading and the Slavers would think that particular beastfolk an idiot not worth the hassle when they're in full beast mode (although they still had to do things that they didn't want to do that fell into circus animal rather than slave by a particular magic). All this happened before the start of the campaign except the liberation part and they learned that through interaction with the NPCs they befriended. They liberated them by freeing a dragon NPC who was lamenting the foolishness of his captors and together, they slew all but one of the Slavers they were duped into traveling with and sent that last Slaver to lie to his gang and say bandits slaughtered all but him and stole all the beasts while one of the players hawks tailed him from the sky and that same Slaver was to deliver information on his gang or face a terrible fate. I used the unwanted pregnancy and Nazi tools (and I mean story tools) differently and with tact as to not make the players uncomfortable, as used properly you get a good story, but used improperly you get horror stories like the one in the video. Anyway I hope you enjoyed my non-horror story and little joke at the front.

The only trigger warning I ever need, is if there is a trigger warning, that tells me that there is a red flag and the fun content is often reduced by at least 30%. Do you know why it's ok to throw nazis into there without a warning? Because the use of such a thing is intended to illicit a response, your OOC response and how it can shift your feelings moods, etc. can play a HUGE part in bringing life to an otherwise stale, by the numbers, mechanical world. If you can throw the player off, then suddenly the game can become more fun, it stops being a game of chess where they planned 10 moves ahead, and becomes an actual improvised and narrative experience. Also, there are only a few dozen people on earth who would be triggered by nazis, and they aren't playing DnD. And this is coming from someone who has the star his grandmother was forced to wear in poland. Stop belittling their sacrifices, their trauma, their losses, by pretending something you know nothing about can't exist.

I admit that I have a pregnancy kink myself and like kinky RP involving it. With that being said, I would *NEVER* try to insert it into a normal DnD game, online or otherwise, unless ERP was allowed and people were comfortable with that kink in general. Honestly, I have no IDEA why a lot of problem players and DMs like to force it onto other people like in those past stories; it makes even me cringe in disgust and embarrassment.

  • @BlueTressym

    @BlueTressym

My guess is that the people in these horror stories have a rather different mentality to your good self in respect of said kink. Unfortunately, there is a subset of men who see making someone pregnant as an expression - sometimes even the ultimate expression - of 'manliness' and so forcing a pregnancy gives them a power kick and feeds that creepy AF mindset. It's no coincidence that the Venn diagram of DMs with pregnancy fetishes and those who like to force events in-game by abusing their power as a DM is, if not a circle, then a pair with a LOT of overlap. (Just in case it needs to be said, yes, I expect there are people of other sexes and genders who drag pregnancy fetishes into the game as well but they seem to be a lot fewer in number - to the extent that I don't recall any - and do so for different reasons. Still not OK though.)

Not cool - but Awful sounded like she was just being an edge lord out for shock value. Like, 'look at me, everybody! I'm being offensive! Aren't I DARK and CRAZY?' Obnoxious behavior, sure, but it sounds like she was basically just trolling her fellow players - maybe the DM should have told her to knock it off, but still, I don't know if her allowing it was really a 'WE'RE NOT FRIENDS ANYMORE' level offense.

Please more Hemingway less Hugo Okay yeah, second story I was wondering what OPs problem was until they basically showed how they didn't think someone being a N*z* sympathizer was a big deal. Like everything else OP said I really didn't agree with, okay there is a player you don't agree with, good things it's a one shot. If you don't think N*z*'s should be a villain you are cutting yourself out of a lot of media (though I do draw a line at anything holocaust related or if it gets into the ideology behind them) Like if I was DMing and a player wanted to lead Nazis, I would be questioning them on how the f**k they think this would work. Like they are undead Drider Nazi's, you're a lower planes Vamp with no connection their history or whatever. Hating "reds" (and then making a 1950s remark which showed he knew nothing about WW2 or McCarthy and the red scare to boot) has nothing to do with it. Like the best you're going to get is on a nat 20 they won't kill your stupid ass. You'll also have to do a roll (secret insight check) as they pretend to follow you if you fail and kill you soon as they get into position.

The whole point of using them is that they're obvious bad guys because everything about them is so loathable and they instantly give your players something to hate easily. Using them as allies/protagonists is a game is a huge case of missing the point - and frankly says something disturbing about the DM, since he's either tone-deaf, or worse, a nazi sympathizer. Nazis aren’t part of D&D, and they never have been part of D&D. They were real people who committed real atrocities, and it is completely reasonable that, say, a survivor of those atrocities, or someone who lost a loved one to those atrocities, or a member of the groups the atrocities were targeted at would find such a thing triggering. Yes, D&D lore features villains who do horrific things, but there’s a difference between them and the nazis: D&D villains aren’t real. Duregar, drow, mind flayers… they’re all fictional. There are no real life people who’ve lost family to a drow raid, or been tortured by mind flayers. Putting nazis in your game makes it about real life horrors, and it’s perfectly reasonable for people to be upset about that.
