    I never would have guessed Ethan Peck didn't consider himself a singer. What a great use of his voice! This interview was a wonderful addition to watching the episode.

    Thank you, Elizabeth! Yes, Ethan Peck's singing voice sounds amazing. Listening to him talking in various interviews, his natural speaking voice is just amazing: both deep and clear. Thank you very much for letting us know you appreciated the interview. It was a departure from our normal podcast format, but we felt it was worth it to get these two melody makers interviewed finally!

    I've rewatched "Subspace Rhapsody" many times and the whole family listens to the soundtrack in the car. The writing and music was brilliant! My daughter and I agree that this was the best TV musical in recent history. I love musicals and I love all things Star Trek, but I didn't know how this was going to be integrated storywise. I will admit that I had my doubts when I first heard about this episode, but I'm really glad I was wrong ! Great job you two! :)

    In Chapel's song -- "If I need to leave you, I won't fight it" -- it works so well because it is cruel. Had she been able to just talk to Spock, she wouldn't have been as open, sparing his feelings. But as she was "under the spell" of the fold, she had to say it.

  • @MelodyPodcast

    @MelodyPodcast

    That was my feeling exactly, Solomon, and she didn't WANT to have that conversation right there -- Spock instigated the singing, and thus the brutal honesty, and the outcome.

    So true. To borrow a term from the Picard universe, the 'absolute candor' forced on them by the anomaly led to some extremely tortured revelations. And as a consequence of all that truth, the characters experience growth that they might not have otherwise.

    This was a really cool behind-the-scenes view of the episode. I really enjoyed it. The pain and anger that came out in the lyrics of Spock's (I'm the X) piece really provides a justification for the character's predominantly stoic (i.e. Vulcan) disposition in all of the Trek shows/films. It really hurts being dumped. Also, this episode has spawned a really clever quote for the current generation of Star Trek fans. "You've never heard K-pop until you've heard it sung in the original Klingon" I don't know who thought that up (it wasn't me) but from an old Trek fan, that is hilarious.

The solid commitment to making this episode both a musical AND part of the greater story -- including 1) long plotlines, 2) individual episode plot, 3) individual character plots, AND 4) canon -- was so impressive and admirable. And No. 1 singing about secrets -- especially after Ad Aspra per Aspera, during which I admit I ugly cried -- hit home for me as well.

    This was a fantastic interview to watch. My dad and I (who both love Star Trek) watched this episode together and we both greatly enjoyed it. We laughed so much when Spock started singing. I would also say the K-pop works better for the Klingons since they had mentioned the singing as being "their dishonor." This episode was a standout in two ways: first, we went directly to KZread VIDEO with it (videos for most of the podcast episodes are only available to our Patreon patrons); also, we did not examine any particular melody together, which is usually the point of any given episode. But for Kay and Tom, there was just too much to discuss about the episode for us to instead spend time examining a melody. (BTW, we have plans to examine some of the song melodies from "Subspace Rhapsody" in future episodes with other guest composers.) Definitely let us know who you think would be a good composer or songwriter guest, either for just an interview, or to explore a melody together, and thank you again--SO MUCH!--for your kind support!

Regarding why we got to do the interview: As "just" a podcaster talking "just" about the process of writing the songs, Tom and Kay could be interviewed here because they were not discussing specifically WRITING (other than giving a shoutout to the writers) or ACTING (other than giving shoutouts to the actors). They were discussing SONGWRITING and music production. They were not crossing any lines. They seemed to be truly delighted to finally have the chance to talk about their work, as circumstances had stalled them getting the attention they deserved right at the time when they were finally free to talk about it!

    I was one of those trekkies that refused to watch this episode after I saw it was a musical episode. My mind raced back to Ally McBeal's 2000 Christmas musical. I never watched the Buffy musical episode and I tried to just now . . . but the songs didn't leave any impressions. When I finally watched Subspace Rhapsody, that song about keeping secrets had my arms tingling and hairs standing on its ends. There are only a couple of songs that have ever done that. Maurice White's I Miss You, Atlantic Star's Masterpiece and Howard Hewitt's Say Amen. Each time it happens, it takes several days to get those songs out of my mind so I could move on. I'm on day 3 now, darn it. The vocal ranges of the actresses singing The Paradigm and Connection songs just blew me away. Trekky loyalist will probably disapprove the episode due to breaking Star Trek tradition of serious tones and suspense, something established by TOS and followed by NG, Voyager, DS9 and even Enterprise. At the same time, changes are inevitable, not always for the better, but the challenge to break new ground persists. If I were to rate Subspace Rhapsody by its own merits, Star Trek tradition not withstanding, you two hit the ball right out of the galaxy. It really did break new ground. I guess there isn't much more I can add except to say Thank you for the enjoyable experience.

    OMG this is so awesome! I love how Uhura's song starts with Gregorian chants!! That song is so touching, it tells such a story of how Uhura is grieving the loss of her family, and figuring out how to go on without everyone she loves, everyone who loves her. The lyrics showing that loss are so poetic and heartfelt. Boy does Celia sing it!! So good!! 💜🖖🏿🪐💫✨

    I think the Pelia, Uhuru, and Spock singing in a specifically posed way, reminds me of a “Bohemian Rhapsody” pose minus one. Or, it’s an American Gothic pose plus one. 😂

    It's been several weeks since I first saw the episode, and I still wake up many mornings with the songs in my head, and listen to it regularly. I really love how it allowed the actors to show their emotional range, face, body language, they really got to show their stuff in this episode.

    I was skeptical if they could pull it off. I worried it would be way too corny, even for Star Trek. But they pulled it off amazingly. It worked within the reality of the show and the songs were fantastic too.

    Great interview about one of my favorite Star Trek episodes ever. I noticed something in the grand finale and I wondered if it was put there as an easter egg for musicians. When the counter gets to 300 Uhura leaps out of her chair and the time signature changes from 3/4 to 4/4. My immediate thought was oh, they need 344, so that's 44 left to go, so Uhura's like "ok we need 4/4." I assumed that was a collaboration between the composers and the writers. I am crazy?
