Ten cubic just about does winter in wood for me. I learnt from the Bulgarians always have supplies for at least a week in the house in case of bad weather. If storms and snow are forecast fill everything you can with water because that can go off for days too. Get a gas ring job for power outages and many have generators just in case to run the freezers etc. have some form of lighting. I keep battery run fairy lights on hand. The storm that preceded this weather was proper scary no power no internet the Saturday night I thought the world was going to end. My neighbors came and rescued me the following afternoon and took me to their house for alcohol lol. I love Bulgarians

If you have empty plastic bottles or containers fill them with water ,leave them outside so you can put them in the freezer to keep it going and avoid wasting the food

We by 10 m2 for the winter and we always have 5 m2 more for just in case but we manage with 10 m2. We keep our wood in the garage close and waterproofed. ❤❤❤ Love your videos. And if you whant to gro some vegies in the spring ask the neighbors when they put seeds to grow.

I buy the wood uncut at the end of spring and cut it ourselves ( we hire a wood splitter) it works out much cheaper. Also as you are renovating the house you might want to look into having a traditional masonry stove built. I did this ( I grew up in the UK but moved to Eastern Europe)they are fantastic and release heat for days literally and they double up as an oven and stove

Even severe weather looks so beautiful. Love snow time, especially around Christmas. Unfortunately in last few winters there is not much of snow, and when it falls it is a disaster. Hope no long power outages in future. We bought little solar generator in case no power for few hours. Also is planned a bigger house solar installation so in future wont be dependent

Good you have snow, there is severe drought in southern Europe especially in Spain and they have even cut the water by 20% in some regions. Winter really arrived suddenly in Bulgaria this year, but this is good to have water! Those type of winters are normal in BG and should be a norm, but by March, you MUST celebrate Baba Marta and wear red and white martenistas on your wrists, the girls will like it a lot, it´s a beautiful tradition :) FYI, they opened an IKEA store in Veliko Tarnovo last week just in case you need something urgent for the house.

Hello ! I am following your project with interest. For the heating season, you need about ten cubic meters of wood, only if the house is well insulated. I say this from experience. Usually people secure this amount a year in advance. They let them dry until next year. So the wood burns better and you have more heat with less. Good luck and patience with the endeavor. Be happy in our lovely country!

No, this winter has been mild for the area!

I guess the kids and the dogs loved it the most. It is cold and wet, but that is the beauty of it. After some time outside to go back in and put some dry clothes on, sit in front of the wood burner with a hot drink or have a hearty meal. and get those rosy cheeks. Brings back memories

It is a wet, heavy snow. Not light and fluffy. that is what causes problems with the electricity supply. But as you said It is lovely.

The snow is very pretty, especially in the sunshine, but so inconvenient unless you are well stocked up and have back up plans in place for all eventualities. Now you know what to expect for next year and can plan for it, though it may not be so bad! Despite it being hard it's amazing how resourceful you can be, and it's funny how the simplest of things become pure pleasure during a power cut. Glad you're all ok, hope it stays that way.

Your place looks so magical with all that snow. We love how you just taking it all in your stride. The puppies are adorable and you all loving the snow making angels and snowmen. We collect wood from all our fruit trees when pruning and now use our radiators and heatpump but no where as cold as you there.

You should use chains ⛓️ for your vehicle tires in these conditions. Its something we commonly do here in Bulgaria when travelling through snow on countryside roads.

Hi I was without power for 3 days. Luckily I have a petchka and on a whim in November bought a small one ring gas camping cooker and one gas canister. Making meals on the petchka was interesting lol. Beans then broke an egg in the middle. Have 4 cubes of wood which should last all winter but I have a small bungalow. I call it camping in the house. Enjoy your videos and seeing your journey.

If you do buy a generator make sure it is a good quality sine wave inverter type, most modern electrical equipment has PCBs in circuit somewhere, and they don't like messy electric. Honda are probably the best. At some stage you will have to register the camper van,i f you plan on keeping it here, depending on how it is registered and shows on the V5 you may need to take it for a Technotest before you take it to Kat. I only lost power for about 90 seconds on the coast. Winter doesn't really quick in until Jan/Feb. I don't have a petchka, I use infrared heating. I have a catalytic gas fire with bottle here for emergencies but have never had to use it.

Yes, we are worried about the campervan registration. It's registered as a light goods vehicle on the V5C, so not sure. It needs to get done this month really and I'm not looking forward to navigating the process with my limited Bulgarian 😫 Thank you for your advice - it's greatly appreciated!

Thanks for these video, I read the news about these autumn storm and haven't seen that much snow so early in the season. But who knows a week later southern germany bet lost in the snowmand now Bulgaria is back in higher temps and sun. It is frightened to see what could happend in another place to live, in Bulgaria Candels, enough dried wood and water next year food reserves, should be fine to make you enjoy the life much more. I would recommend to give the house a better thermal closure usally you should do it with 2 to 3 qm of wood. Sune

hihi first time see winter in Bulgaria,dont worry,just prepare better ,for next time,get generator,or solars,for energy,if,this happen again,i saw,you have pechka with wood,so heating is not a problem,and ask some old neighbour,to show you,how to prepare zimnina,winter food in jars,tyrshia,lukanka,sudjuck,dry meat-pusturma,wine and rakia and winter will only eat and drink at home,winter is for relax,as my grand-grand parents live,all lived more than 95 years RIP,happy relaxing live.And for car get tire chains for snow and put meat in snow until come elecricity .10 cubic meters wood atleast,for winter.Healt and happynes,from Plovdiv,mates :)

hihi no problem,have some more advises,you live in wild place,get sheperd dog,to live outside in garden,not inside,bulgarian sheperd dogs have exspirience with predators,love snow time,just need cover for rain and dont eat to much,1 bred per day and put rockwool,heat izolation on top of sealing under roof,will save much more heat and is not expensive,this is all you need to live 100 years in here,wish you good luck@@the_phoenixproject

Hello family! Just to know for next winter, during the spring and early summer (early is better) you can sight for woods from the council up to I think 8 cubic meters per family , and it will be lower price. That’s what my mom do every year. Then in few months they deliver BUT you have to cut and chop it 🤷🏼 it’s kinda worthy as it’s cheaper. Also we had power cut twice this month as we had storm fist weekend and then the snow storm next weekend on the coast wasn’t pleasant but in few hours the power came back. It’s not nice as our “pecka” have a water pump and we can run it up to 2 hours out of power as we got battery but still was not enough :/ glad you made it through this rough time🖤

I love your vids. You guys are amazing. I can’t suggest anything that others in the comments have suggested already. There’s only one thing but is has nothing to do with the weather or the power outage. I’ve heard you commanding the dog to sit using the Bulgarian word “Sedni” “Седни”. Make sure you stress on the “”I” “и”. The stress is not on the “e”. You could pronounce is longer or louder or both and it will sound perfect like the Bulgarians are pronouncing it.

if i lived in an area like this, what would have potential for trees to get overladen with snow like that tree was, i think i would invest in a decent scrub bar with an extension pole saw attachment. To be used to trim back the smaller branches and limbs, further away from buildings, before using a chainsaw to finally cut off the larger limb.

@@the_phoenixproject yes , i understand that money can cause us to need to make do with the tools we have available. However, in a situation like the one you were faced with one of those pole saws would absolutely help to make the job safer and easier by far. If you are expecting to face the same again i would just recommend one of those pole saws. If you haven't used one before, i'm sure you'll be impressed. Especially once you get the hang of using them. There is a knack to using them that stops oneself from getting the blade snagged and stuck halfway through cutting a branch. But once that mistake gets mastered, they are like gold to have within a tool kit, especially for the tricky jobs like that one that you had. As you can attack it all in a real surgical manner. And then they are also still handy as a grass trimmer. By swapping the attachment back to the brush cutter attachment again whenever it comes time to whip the lawn back into shape 🙂

@@suzimasterson5730 it's nowhere near as expensive as the UK. I'll check with Anthony, but we definitely didn't pay more than £30 per dog. You also don't need to make an appointment. You can just turn up and get the animals vaccinated at your convenience. Sometimes the vet is in surgery and you have to grab a coffee before you see them. It's much easier and cheaper either way ☺️

Guys never ever buy wood like this! It ends up so expensive for Gods sake! Buy the wood cut only meter by meter your husband can cut it and you can pay someone for the job with the ax if you don't wanna do it(8-10lv per m3). And do that at the end of spring. Around 10m3 to be sure to not run out of wood the next winter and so that the wood have time to dry. Also right now they are giving you a price and they say it's per m3, but it actually is for 0, 7m3.

We have lived in Spain 17 years, lived 6 years with no water, no electric... no mod cons, & best years ever... But, we had a generator. Finally built our next home , still no electric, then small Solar system. A year ago we moved , again no electric. First thing was full Solar, but we still have a generator for back up if needed. We have a beautiful home, but still live as simply as we can, & everyone surprised we still don't have a telly 🤣. After 17 years we are fine without. Good luck with your amazing project. It is time... It is time for me to ~embarrass myself, as per usual, while introducing myself (because if I separate those two I just won`t be honest) If anything I will generate you one long, long post to fill your time during the winter days. Not that you don`t have better things to do, but still... of course you might as well not read anything out of what I am about to type :P It actually will be mostly self centered and the one reason I can come up with for you to have any interest (and thus a reason for me to write it, outside of I want to at this point) Is for you to after having my text read knowing "one more Bulgarian guy" that at least in the current lives in this country ~Bulgaria. :P But first things first. I have seen a few of your videos and I am becoming ~a fond of them (if that`s the correct expression). They both remind and teach me lot of stuffs. I am now thirty six years of age, single (life long :P), male. I live in an apartment in a residential neighborhood on the seventh floor out of eight. One of the larger cities of the country. It`s a two room thing (Kitchen + Bedroom) and bathroom/toilet. I live in it since recently and there are many circumstances around it, but I don`t wanna go on details into that. It is fairly "decked out" place ~meaning it`s properly "refurbished" with everything appropriate for the kitchen, the bathroom, the floor., the walls and than I've added myself with my desk, a ~decent PC on top of it and a bunch of my life long possessions. This "picture" is intended for me to "show you", the same way I am seeing what you are showing on your videos, except I don`t do videos. Ultimately I will also got to some sort of a point about "why", but there will be a bit of more self centered story and some bitching and some moaning :P. My previous living space was a shared roof with my father on a fifth floor of a five story much smaller, overall, building than my current one. By the way I forgot to mention in my "living conditions" section that you as now official Eastern European residents, even if in the rural parts, at the moment, should definitely be familiar with the so popular on other channels "Copy/Pastas" (that`s how they call the type of building that I live in... because it is :P) There are two more apartments on my floor, they are larger and inhabited by people with children. It is three apartments per every of the eight floors and there are buildings just like the one I am in ~everywhere around. Long story short it was also a "city thing". But... all of this typed in the second paragraph was a prelude to me saying: I am familiar first person with Bulgarian Rural life, first hand experience myself :P (Actually I am not much familiar with any sort of first hand life experience myself, much but more on that latter on). In her later my late grandmother have moved to her birthplace small village house (very far away from where you are), but even prior to that I used to spent periods of time there, including the winter, with her. Yes that is like erm ~thirty years ago, roughly, story/memories. But I clearly remember it. I mean. The what`s shown in your video deep snow everywhere, the wood stove... Of course my father at the time have had ~possibly all sorts of vehicles and lots of enthusiasm to "drive around". Even if per say on a car that is just front wheel drive, he`d put those steel chain track things and it will grip itself trough about as deep fresh snow ~almost no probs. In fact the only problem becomes "the clearance" if the car just sort of flatten itself out on it`s floor on top of the snow and the tires just do not have any weight on them to get friction in the already slippery snow (latter on I got to drive a lot of car myself, but he have already explained and showed me all of this). So the point is he would come to check on his mom (my grandmother) and lil` me. But Grandma of course having grown in the village was expert winter survivor herself :P. She used to take me on trips in the nearby mountains, when the weather have settled... I also remember daily trips to a neighbor/friend with a cow, and she`d milk the cow there and than and back in the House, grandma would warm me milk and lace it with honey... Mmm warm honey milk with the winter outside, after a snowy trip. There even were warm springs/pools (and still are), natural ones, in that village and I don`t know if it was in the winter in particular, but I do remember being in those as well. That was my Bulgarian winter picture one (vintage as of rural area thirty years ago). Also my mother have few rooms in a Villa in the mountain. And after a certain point my father had a 4x4 family wagon he was (still is) particularly proud of. So for a while, the first thing we'd do when the snow hits in the winter, was him firing up mentioned car, driving us up the mountain... (that car actually did that) and he`d park in the village/villa area center and we would take a hike in the fresh snow in the mountain than have a small feast in the restaurant on mentioned center. I guess it is now appropriate to mention that I am currently a rear wheel drive car driver and I totally would not be able to recreate that experience by myself. Now the odd thing is if I ask my dad if he wants to go up the mountain in the winter with his car and have a hike, he`d probably be up for it, but erm... that`d be kind of awkward :P Another thing is my father, mother and I more often than not used to celebrate the New Years in rented mountain villas with bunch of their friends with their children. I have always been a great winter experience. As you can tell (or probably you can) currently with my City Apartment and rear wheel drive car I am not much a winter person anymore. But I used to greatly enjoy it as a child. Oh also for a while I were student in the Capitol of Bulgaria and the winters there are >much So yeah... the most winter I have seen thus far was like 3 to 5 centimeters of snow, but I greatly enjoyed your POV footage of >the real snowthis winter Obviously I will look/apply for work... But erm... I actually only have twelve grade education (Failed my bachelor`s degree in mentioned Capitol student years) and not much working experience. I went to few interviews and on some place they didn`t want me, some placed didn`t look doable/viable to me... on some places I manage to mess it up by attempting to chose one over another and than the second place screwing me of itself and the first one. It happened and it happens in a way that puts "the regret" in me... and I am fan of Madonna - Frozen part of the text where she more or less preaches to "not waste your time with hate and regret". I don`t like to waste my time and both regret and hate are kind of actually that... so I try not to do them. But ultimately if and when I end up without income and money it will be very hard for my time to not be wasted.

Part Two (was too Long for one comment) Anyways... randomly I wanna type you bunch of awkward things to sharpen the details of "the picture" because it probably is a bit blurry at this point. You see... the town might not "remember me with good"... First I definitely did try to switch and ditch it for the Capitol... except I failed (or might have been sabotaged, who knows, paranoia). Also I used to for quite some time smoke a lot of Marijuana, what do you Family UK people think on that? :P. I used to smoke a lot of it, obviously by a lot of it (with me and my ~friends) and sometimes sell some, for non profit purposes. I've also done quite a few prostitutes (Yeah this might be a bit non family with children friendly segment, but I think is ~Informative and thus needed) here and there. I used to have a ton of recorded and non recorded traffic violations. Like this one time... in the winter... After getting high in a friend`s apartment, after I recklessly drove in town. But actually flawlessly so, meaning I did not crash or died in spite of the icy roads and the definitely way, way above the regulations speed, I initiated "parking" to buy myself a lighter (because mine have ran out or something and I did have the intention of getting myself stoned some more at home some more)... after all this accident free, super unreasonable driving, instead of parking I practically slammed myself in one car`s rear next to the sidewalk. Because I somehow thought I'd be able to stop much better than I actually did, because of the Ice. That other car`s rear was kind of smashed, I only popped my front right headlight (it literally burst forward of the inertia), still went to the 24/7, purchased the lighter... drove away (It were dark cold night, with no one around and I sure as hell weren`t reporting anything to anyone under the mentioned conditions). I parked normally, got home... got more stoned... It actually was my 2nd time popping a headlight like that ~on this car :P. Soon after I replaced it and now just my car looks a lil less sound on the front right. Since than I have had two arrest and got sued twice by the appropriate government, municipal representatives. Fortunately with no effective verdict. And I don`t smoke Marijuana since the 2nd time, because 3rd encounter with the law will be guaranteed Jail Time for me... It`s been like ~7 years since than. But the point is... I am the same person, with the same car... And even if, as I've said, it`s one of the larger cities of the country, it`s still world wide wise ~small one. So maybe people don`t remember me with good. Given me being poorly educated, lazy, with history of using drugs they don`t want to give me work for income so that I can ~continue to be amongst them :( Now normally the story would go "And I don`t blame them for that"... but I do blame them for that :P I don`t hate them because of Madonna thou. Once again ~Frozen an appropriate for the winter times vintage track... the music video is good too. A few final words... It`s what I've actually wanted to say all the time since your previous "survival" video... "At least you've got each other" and >definitely< something to live for... your children. So the challenge is on... Let`s see what videos you will be posting winter and if I will be typing anything as a comment to them :P. With the stated conditions of me being in a city apartment and you being in a secluded village area... I still wouldn`t be surprised if you win. In fact I think you are overpowered. Or at least so it would seem from the videos.

Why are you not allowed to chop down trees for firewood? Doesn't that mean that you would have to buy it instead? Edit: NVM, you answered that later in the video.

I think it's become an illegal trade because poor families can't afford the wood. It's sad, but I suppose it takes the business away from the small wood yards that provide the firewood.

@@the_phoenixprojectthe true is if it is legal, everyone will go to the forest and chop as much as they can no matter if they truly need it. The government provide money for the poor families more than 50% of the money worth for heating during winter, but also the gipsies are still chopping woods from the forest and sell it cheaper illegally of course, that’s why the police check your van as it is a van you know hah :) also for illegals as it is a big thing here they try to enter through Turkey 🤷🏼 but if you have many trees in your yard you can chop them and burn in need

@@the_phoenixproject no but what will happen if everyone cuts all the time? We will end up with no forest! Only licensed engineers can say wich trees are for cutting without” hurting” the forest even if it is yours. And yes it is not free. Also a lot of the forests are private! If you own a forest it won't be ok for me to come and cut your trees and destroy the forest you have been developing for decades for my pecka . Doesn't you have that organisation in England too? Who owns the forest?

@@the_phoenixproject the poor families can buy wood really cheap (50-70 Lv per m3) they only have to talk with the mayor, and even with that practice a lot of not so poor people find a way to make a “dalavera”

cant you just dig a hole in th snow and put your freezer stuff in it?

I remember my grandma told me to take out the peach "kompot" from the basement, which was my favorite. It was extremely dark place and I was always scared of being locked there. I went down and turned on the light, found the kompot and when I turned around the electric cuts and I'm in complete darkness. And then darkness became my ally, I was molded by it, and won all my fears ( I was just screaming babooooooooo)
