Very helpful! I'm doing my own taxidermy work on a turkey and needed some ideas to help straighten the wing feathers and this worked perfect! Thanks for taking the time to post this!

Thank you for making this video! You answered my question in a very clear and concise fashion. I found a nice feather that I wanted to use as a wind indicator, but it is far too bent. Now I think it will work. Nice to build something far better than can be manufactured with plastic. Again, thank you!

Not sure why people are asking weird questions when they can just Google the answers, like feathers for quill pens. This was an excellent video. Thank you so much for posting this :)

Hello, thank you for demonstrating the techniques, they are very helpful. I was wondering if you plan on making a video on painting turkey feathers to imitate eagle feathers. I see various types of painted imitation eagle feathers and was hoping to learn the different techniques. Thank you

I saw that you can also use steam to fix damaged feathers in case you don't want to cut the feather. I'd likely do it before flattening

Reggie Brinkley they were steamed with water or did a long soak in a water with a very weak lye solution using white ash to help soften the spine and then they would would be shaped and then pressed. sometime rocks were used on the fletch to help keep the shape and allowed to be slowly air dried in the sun. most preparations were made in spring for obvious reasons. for my people, the chiricahua, this how we did this. but many tribes had many variations of this same theme. it's very hard for westerners to understand truly how complex and how varied traditions amongst the over 500 recognized tribes (and the countless dozens who are are so small as to not be recognized) performed simple tasks such as straightening a feather. but, as a generality, steam or a water soak were the overwhelming majority of how feathers were straightened with regalia. some were dried quickly, some slowly. the thing to remember is that there really is not "authentic" way, as each of our tribes had their own "authentic" way.

One ADDITIONAL tip that may help to the viewers of this video,IS: After the Feather is taken OUT of it being "Pressed" together...........Take a can of "Spray-Starch" that is normally used on shirts after they are dry-cleaned,and spray the Feather with a light-coating of THAT and THAT should help it maintain it's "firmness" and straightness for a longer period of time!!

Not the most eloquent sentence but I get your drift. However scientist have made fake feathers out of carbon nanotubes about 10 years ago. They may not be shaped like a birds feather but they have the same complex microscopic structure and mechanical properties. It was this break through that has now allowed us to experiment with nano sized space craft that would use such feathers as solar or light sails. The owner of Google, Mark Zuckerberg partnered with Yuri Milner and Stephen Hawking are even putting together a program to use thousands of such spacecraft to travel to Alpha Centauri. The feathers are one of the sail concepts for the nano craft. www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/nano-spacecraft-yuri-milner_us_5709b86ce4b0142232493a18
