Jerry Brainum breaks down the straight facts about bodybuilding diets, dietary fiber, and the health consequences of missing this vital nutrient.
It's often said that bodybuilding is a lifestyle, not just a sport or a hobby. This is made abundantly clear when looking at the extreme detail that goes into a bodybuilding diet. Every single thing put into the body is monitored and adjusted for optimal results in building a perfect physique. However, sometimes a diet perfect for a masterful body is in contrast for what is best in regards to long term health. This is especially true when it comes to fiber - though many don't often know this. In our latest episode of Straight Facts, Jerry Brainum details the importance of dietary fiber and the health consequences of missing this vital nutrient in the long run.

Jerry, you do an amazing job with providing solid information. As a physical therapist, and having lifted weights for over 20 years, I know much of this information however, you always seem to add something extra that I wasn't aware of. I appreciate your ability to research and sift through the bull junk to provide sound advice!

I eat 40 grams of dietary fiber a day with bodybuilding and it is very easy to do so. It also helps stabilize blood sugar and helps digestion. Most people do not take nearly enough fiber in their diet.

There are a number of doctors saying carnivore diet is the most healthy diet for humans, like Dr Chaffee, Dr Shawn Baker etc who say fiber is completely unnecessary for health. Wonder if Jerry would debate them on a pod cast?

There has been studies with fiber vs no fiber. Fiber caused constipation. Fiber moves slow causing fermentation , fermentation causes the cancer.

100% i believe shortness of breath and bubble gut's are due to slow motility in the gut with the 5000+ cal . bodybuilding diets . Supplementing with psyllium husk fiber unflavored and plenty of water, give it a go.

@@albardo08 I like taking EAA'S after working out with Glutamine. I find it helps recovery a bit even when taking enough protein a day. I train naturally never did drugs since my first competition in 92. I ma 5 5 200 lbs 17 and three quarter arms and bike ride about 100 miles a week as cardio movement work and weight training 5 days a week or so. Hitting every muscle about every 3 days on a push pull. I have always trained that way and for me it works. The more work load on your body the more your nutritional requirements are. I use the EAA'S as a extra insurance especially after training with L Glutamine. Was diagnosed with left side colitis in 2006 and suffered with it till about 2010 then I Increased my dietary fiber intake to about 40 grams a day. Green apple with skin, flax seed, chia seed, little brown rice, an orange strawberries, blueberries especially any berries as they have low glycemic index and good fiber even a fiber one bay during the day with my 5 meals a day Glutamine has been scientifically shown to be of great benefit for IBS/IBD and helps the intestional mucosa and the colonic activity in reduction of inflamation. I easily get the 40 grams of dietary fiber with pro biotics twice a day. My protein sources are Fish for omegas, iso whey protein very little dairy, skinned chicken breast, and as little processed food as possible. for my main proteins. Not an egg eater as I have a difficult time digesting them but occasionally will have them. Red Meat is very low in my body building lifestyle diet though. Very rave a steak. There is a link to dietary red meat consumption and colorectal cancer so I "greatly" limit my intake of it but not totally cut it out. Last colonoscopy this month was perfect and no inflammation from colitis and a Mayo clinic score of zero! I HAVE HAD THIS NOW 10 YEARS EATING LIKE THIS! NUTRITION ABSOLUTELY MATTERS! Bodybuilders sadly, usually only give a shit about looking big and muscular. Now I JUST TURNED 50 AND LOOK 28 LITERALLY and live the lifestyle and enjoy all the foods I eat! I hear stories of bodybuilders friggin blending chicken breast and drinking it! Who the hell want's that shit! You got to like the foods you eat or forget it! Anyway, fiber is way way way overlooked for healthy micro flora in the gut and for overall health and it would be good if more body builders put down less white rice and a little more quality dietary fiber as it is super easy to consume a solid 40 plus grams a day with 4 to 6 meal settings as most typical bodybuilders eat for constant protein muscle reconstruction.

Mmm no. Fiber is nothing more than undigested material, really no benefit. I've been on carnivore for 4 yrs and have taken back my health. Also when you have a diverticulitis flare up they recommend a low residue diet i.e fiber free diet. My digestion and overall healthy is very good. So I respectfully disagree with your viewpoint on fiber.
