Strafe Mode found in Jak 3! 😱

Jak 3 has a hidden/unused strafe mode. It can be enabled by setting strafe-mode to true (and has to be set to false if you want Jak to be able to rotate again).
It feels kind of weird and non-fluid. But regardless, I find it interesting that they were experimenting with this. Strangely there are no signs of this in Jak II, which means they only started implementing this in Jak 3 (and never finished it).
I set up hotkeys in Cheat Engine to easily toggle it while recording. Cheat Engine hotkeys feature has text-to-speech for some reason, so I enabled it - this way you are aware when I toggle strafe mode.

    It's interesting that they tried implementing it, since the games (Jak 2 at least) are built around Jak's movement, and the level design fits that. Strafing would require much more angular level design. Obviously this feature is unfinished, so I'd assume they would make rotating the camera rotate Jak as well, so he's always facing where the camera is, but I notice that Jak's auto aim is still active while strafing, effectively making strafing useless. I wonder if they would have kept the auto aim if they committed to strafing? Either way, I'm glad they scrapped it, this makes it seem like a last minute idea that feels like a band-aid "solution" to criticisms they got for Jak 2's aiming. (Also gives credence to my idea that they were trying to, at least partially, copy Ratchet's success with the extended weapon count). Thanks for showing this off :D

    This is pretty cool, it would be awesome to see a finished implementation of this! Combined with a closer camera and fov you could really change the way the game feels to play in a meaningful way!

    It just need more animation to make it right i think and a following camera like R&C. But we all know that is not necessary for Jak, he's great how he is

    I wished this was finished. Most people’s complaints about jak 2 and 3 is about the aiming with the guns, this would’ve solved that problem

    Never understood the gun aiming issues people have. You touch the left stick, Jak swaps to a new target. That's it, very easy to control.

    I can see why they left it unfinished even if they worked out the kinks it would've been a very low reward kind of thing. in fact it looks even clunkier and the gun course would be harder to do with strafing which completely defeats the point.

    A bit late to a video and a feature I didn't know existed. Not entirely surprised they considered it, given the amount of new guns they added and R&C's success. Hell, Shadow The Hedgehog had strafing and that's also a platformer. Alright now I have some things to say here. Firstly, _"Unlike the Ratchet games, Jak did not have strafing. And it was okay."_ Assuming by "okay" you mean fine, nothing but a BASE take. Yikes. Doesn't look as bad as I thought in terms of combat (even with the unfinished animation), but still a mechanic that really doesn't belong in the game/series, even Jak 3 surprisingly. Jak legitimately looks like Ratchet while strafing, which is a bigger problem than people realize. Sure some would absolutely love this feature (those who suck at the shooting system and want it to play more like a shooter), but it'd only largely amplify the inferiority label people give to the Jak games in comparison to Ratchet's series (owning more guns and having better gunplay combat, the latter of which Jak's series doesn't take into account of its game/combat design at all). At most I'd be okay with completed strafing added as a super tedious unlockable in secrets or so. Keep it away from being a core mechanic and treat it like a "what if?" bonus unlockable only, similar to the spin-dash-boost in Sonic Frontiers (best example I got atm). And make it toggleable so players aren't stuck with it forever after using it. We don't, for example, want a Dead Space Remake situation here where after unlocking the overpowered prototype stasis you can't unequip it through free roam and new game+s. I cannot fathom how some developers don't allow you to toggle even just certain character unlockable features.

    Who would have known the game where enemies come from all directions and get close and personal........ does not benefit hugely from strafing.

    I can see why they didn't finish it. It doesn't look good to be honest. Feels like it belongs in a closer in point of view type camera setup with better aiming accuracy than the game provides and disabling the camera from rotating as well.
