    I really hope they lower the weight of standard blocks just a tad, sometimes reasonably buoyant designs tend to slouch below the waterline for no other reason than having a few too many BEDS onboard lol

    Your tutorials are always full of valuable and to-the-point information. If I could offer one suggestion, however, it's to remind you that when you're moving the mouse in circles or zig zags, what your audience sees is a flailing camera that prevents the viewer from focusing on whatever it is you are trying to point at or highlight. We're not looking over your shoulder, we're looking from the perspective of the cursor. What you see is the exactly opposite of what we see.

    It'd be so much easier to set up a drive train properly if the game actually gave you power figures that made sense. For example if you assume that the Torque meter is giving you numbers in Newton Meters, given how the entire game is metric that'd make sense, then the small engine at 20RPS puts out about 6kW of power. This power figure stays properly constant through gearboxes, but when you add a Generator it goes completely out the window. Like you can feed a small generator with 6kW at 20RPS and it'll produce 11 generator output. Feed it the same 6kW at 60RPS and it'll show 20+ generator output. Which already makes no sense. But then when you feed that electrical power to an electric motor and tie a torque meter into that it'll show a seemingly random number based on constant torque at ever increasing RPS. Now even if the generator says it's putting out 20+, when your electric motor puts out more power than the diesel is putting into the system, your batteries will drain. Which makes sense, you put in 6kW and take out 8kW, that's gonna drain the batteries. And when you compare all this to the numbers given in the editor it suddenly stops making sense entirely. The Power numbers on the engines, generators, motors and propellors seem to have no relationship to each other at all. They seem to be completely arbitrary. Same with batteries, the large battery has a capacity of 16000... 16000 what? 16Kilojoule? 16 kilowatthour? It would help the game a lot if the devs were to give units to the numbers in the game and made the numbers consistent.

    make a testbed for your vehicle and set rps limit to 100, start with two intake and two exhaust ports and slowly add more ports, make sure you've got the engine powering something like that can create load; you'll see that it sorta works like upgrading a engine irl, more airflow and exhaust = more power.

    If you use engine powerfuller than a load, it can be super-efficient (i was surprised when used 3:1 and my engine won't loaded and i have 120km/h) You can calculate how much power needs to make your engine super efficient, just divide the gearbox setting (for example if you use 3:1, you will need engine that three times powerfuller than load) and multiply it with power value of the load

  • @AeroQuattro

    @AeroQuattro

    5 жыл бұрын

    if you have a massive array of cooling radiators/heat sinks, potentially having them further away from the engine means that the engine will have a hard time being cooled, pumps will work in this case, same goes for fuel if it's more than a certain length away. in regards to air/exhaust, i tried testing to see if it made any difference and once again it's only if the exhaust/intake array is far away from the engine.

  • @EyeDentify

    @EyeDentify

    4 жыл бұрын

    You should look into MrNewJersey tutorials on building a jet powered Heli, it has alot of usefull information. I got started using jet engines that way, and now i build all sorts of crazy jet engine driven things. But when it comes to helicopters you need to use the right size of main rotor for the right size of craft, it does make a difference. And make sure the arrows points away from the Air intake on the jet engine. Also don´t forget to set fuel tanks to "Jet fuel", its easy to forget. the vanilla start setup for a jet engine is: Air intake -> compressor -> combustion chamber -> turbine (medium) -> Exhaust (for effect, make sure it does not give thrust) So the medium turbine has a power outlet for your Main rotor and tail rotor. Also see the mentioned tutorials about the PID for adjusting the jet engine throttle. I have a slightly different metod for the PID process value, i measure the main rotor RPS with a Torque sensor and have a keypad where i set the RPS i want, and that keypad goes to Setpoint on the PID, the output goes to throttle on combustion chamber. So i just experiment and see what RPS makes my Heli stay in air, hover and perform the best, if i need more power i increase the RPS. But in MrNewJerseys tutorial he measure the RPS of the Jet engine Air Intake and connects that to Process value on PID. If you use a Lever for throttle instead of Keypad like i do, then set the lever to go to max 150 and try that out. If you use MrNewJersey method of measure Air intake RPS then the lever with max 150 will tell the PID that it should not give the engine more throttle then it stays at a max 150 RPS on the Air Intake. NOTE: To hight RPS on the Main rotor blades could make the gyro overcompensate and the heli starts rolling left to right uncontrollably. Then lover the RPS a bit and adjust the gyro how fast it reacts and find the sweet spot. The starting values for the PID that i seen MrNewJersey use is as follow from the TOP: 0.1 0.0001 0.1 That should get you started. Good luck and don´t forget to watch the tutorials.

    That gearbox thing doesn't make any sense.. the engine started out at 42 RPS and then when you engaged a 1:3 gearbox the input dropped to half (20) and the output was only ~50% better than without the gearbox rather than at 60 with. The 2nd gearbox killed engine RPS even harder, and the ultimate output was 66 (only a 10% improvement over 1 gearbox.) If there's no load on the propellers (and air has about 10% the viscosity of water if air resistance is modeled at all) it shouldn't slow the engine down nearly that much. I realize gearboxes add some load, but it shouldn't be enough to cut the engine RPS to 1/6th. Either way it seems impractical to try to increase the RPS beyond 1 gearbox, although the torque side works quite well, with a slight drop in engine torque (to ~104 from 122) for a final geared torque of ~900. Though I'm not sure why the engine is speeding up in that setup. Seems like the obvious solution if you're looking for RPS is some kind of turbine setup rather than an engine.

    Out of my experience with gearboxes (and I've been stressing this out on Steam forums): gearboxes facing towards the engine will not increase your ship' speed. It will, in fact, slow it down considerably while improving the engine's fuel economy.

    You're incorrect. If your ship decreases speed when you enable the gearboxes that are oriented pointing towards the engine, then your ship is to heavy for the engine or the prop doesn't have enough force to propel you. I've tinkered with this for HOURS with the same problem you had and it's literally that; make your ship smaller if your using the small engine.
