the small cylinders are soooo good. I had 3 engines each with 198 cylinders (all 4 sides covered, 50 long, -2 for the coolant) and it could push my 120,000 KG ship at 80 knots. Meanwhile the default large engines I need 7 of them to get 23 knots. at 80,000kg. I actually had to keep adding weight when using the modular engines because it would make the ship fly out of the water

Generator power is directly linked to rps, so the smaller one would make more power. The larger one would have higher torque allowing it to drive a larger load. More aggressive gearing for instance. It is also likely more fuel efficient.
You did not count on torque, you just look at RPS so maybe the big engine has more torque and i belive you should also look at fuel efficiency. Fuel is important too.
@ShaddyWoohooMan

This in my opinion is the biggest factor on switch is beast painfully for very large vessels as those Are likely to be used for a very long time without refuel
It would be great to see fuel comparison along with performance output to really compare the new engines with the old
I love your videos NJ they are so useful. FYI your videos are so relaxing...
You should have gotten the rate of charge from the old engine in the generator and then try to match the power with the modular engines and see which one ends up being larger
So... some thoughts... You need to use the RPS levels matched so you have a base to get a proper comparison. Then match size to see if the modular engines are better at that point for size comparison rather than start with a size comparison. Also fuel consumption and power drain for them all too. Give each engine a larger coolest system, fuel and air setup that will be more equal. So yes more testing! So I would like to see that, though good video otherwise.
@MrNJersey

It was a total output test not a RPS to RPS test, but yes that would be a better way to use for your creations.

It may be that the low rps engine will perform better when geared to produce the same output rpm
I think the advantage will be in the shared crankshaft on the large modular engine. I plan on making a napier sabre engine with the small mod engines.
Great Video!!
this 700 gen output engine in the middle is not that fuel consuming, it eats 1 litre of fuel in 35 seconds if u set throttle to 60, and the gen output on 60 throttle is not that great as the max throttle, its something around 142 and 143 (im not 100% sure about anything what i said) and the coolant to this engine will be a pain to make
I feel like MrNJersey deserves more views, his videos are genuinly really good and helpful
Could we get how fuel efficient the same setups are? Or as a test how long it would take 1 cylinder(be it 1x1 or 3x3) to drain a small tank of fuel, or do you think the propreties of them are going to change too much?
@chopsticks7751

@mykeh3155

Baron Von Bratwurst but what rps is that? engines are generally more fuel efficient around 7 rps, so it would be a good starting point to see how efficient modular ones are at 7, and then start changing speeds and loads. 100% throttle should only be needed when building up to the desired rps.

Maybe it should be that the 3x3 is for torque and the 3x1 for speed
@MrMattumbo
3 жыл бұрын
That would be nice, I feel like the current large engines have really poor torque for their size and combined with the current efficiency meta the only way to get around that while retaining range on a large ship is to just add more engines... A modular high torque engine would be perfect for building large ships, adding an extra cylinder or two is much easier than adding another engine and it should provide better range and speed using large/giant props since they require ass loads of torque .
@alexanderlammers6980
3 жыл бұрын
@@MrMattumbo To be fair on big vessels all I care about really is torque output. The RPS gets geared anyway so without torque you're screwed anyway
3 years late to the party here, but I've been banging my head against a wall for the past week or so trying to keep the 5x5 modular engine cool in the hot parts of the map and with no luck. Tried so many ways of cooling via reddit, Google, and YT and still no luck. Last night I swapped them for the old diesels and like magic my issues were solved. So as far as heat goes imo, the old one wins
the fuel consumption should be part of analysis. I think it might have had more to do with air throughput and exhaust, that made the 3 block suffer.
Yes yes yes! More testing more information!

MrNJersey i would love to see this test done again with all the updates that have been done. would that small engine still stand up. or would maybe the medium modular engine out shine it.. and where does the large diesel fall in the mix.
I noticed that the engines in planes (spitfires for example) had almost the same set up as the middle modular engine though its the exhaust that has the obvious similarities
Really nice,thanks. What is the weight to power ratio?
Is there any chance that you could revisit this, with all the new updates they added?
There is one detail that would be really interesting... Fuel Consumption!
Very interesting but I thought you might go more in depth. Maybe the small modular makes most power, but does it run the hottest? how long can it maintain that vs the other engines? I'm also curious about configurations. If you connect the exhaust of each cylinder into one pipe on an engine, does that reduce power as it would in real life? Good video anyway, thanks!
I was a little surprised at the outcome to be honest
I found the first round of modular engines was actually very underwhelming. Im sure there will be balancing and maybe even performance enhancing parts added to the modular engines like turbochargers or it would be pretty cool to see a standalone supercharger you could drive with an electric motor or even power from the engine itself
@Feradose
3 жыл бұрын
Welcome to 0.11e where you can do superchargers, fiddle with air to fuel ratio, and get baby piss performance per litre of diesel combusted
the generators benefit much more from rps than torque, if you put all of them at the same target RPS (using a PID) you might see that the default one could be better. Also fuel consumption is bound to RPS. One way to achive peak performance is to find the curves for fuel consumption and power generation and find the point where they cross.

yes but this wasnt a rps test, it was a total power output test, if need be follow my tutorials on setting a RPS idle engine which would be better but not for this exmaple

i have literally no building experience whatsoever why am i watching this
If I gained a single IQ everytime he has said "in theory" I would have the cure to cancer and answer to the 8th dimension
I'd imagine the medium modular engines having more torque than the small piston heads so you could gear it up to produce much more power than what you could gear up with the small piston heads though I could be wrong
I have found that if the clutch is at about 0.05% my RPS goes crazy high and the output is amazing. These modular engines are the best.
"The future is now old man."
I can't wait for pew pew guns
I calculated the single cylinder output for the rps and found that if you simply made it a flat 6 arrangement or even a flat 4 and brought power output to 30 rps for that large modular engine, it would make similar power or out perform the aircraft engine Engine 1: 115 watts÷3= 38.3@21 rps engine 2: 789 watts÷20= 39.45 @58 rps Engine 3: 223 watts old engine @30.45 rps
Iv not played with the modular engines but id hope that the parts will have individual damage. Imagine being a SAR mechanic and fault finding your way through an engine to get it up and running again so the crew can get on their way.
So I guess the moudular will be better

From my testing yea. But last time I checked they burn fuel at a crazy rate
Maybe you could conduct another test using fuel efficiency computer to calculate how much power each engine provides per unit of fuel and at what rate.
Can u do this again bit with the new intakes. Mine are separate and I can't get it to work.
Both good
i think you should try and build two boats out of new parts and old parts and make that a sires
biggest issue im having with modular engines right now is simply trying to get the smaller engine parts to create enough power to move a pickup truck. as it stands, I can barely get it rolling with three gearboxes running 3:1 ratios, and its just a chassis... im using a flat 8 engine layout.

Hi. How to add modular engines in game? I cant understand
As with all engines in stormworks its question of power vs fuel consumption. The more power the fuel consumption.
when did they release the update?
why i can't find the model engine part
Middle engine casually doing 600C after 10 seconds. Start up your creation and everything in 10 meter radius including you catches on fire
you need to update this video with the final versions of the pieces
Can someone tell me how to download this please because I don’t know how to.
How do you get modular engines?
why is there a spider on top of your hangar (top left corner in the video)
I didn't know that you had to attach manifolds with the big engines. they made it look like you could do the same "Inline connection" thing you can do with the small ones. Make it more obvious maybe?
Could you do a torque test with a torque sensor?
Can I suggest to open a discord room in your room for Modular Engines? So we could thinker with it
How i get that version
please more testing
Ok, that needs to be tweaked. Sucks the bigger engine parts are basically a waste of space atm.. Maybe they could add diminishing returns on cylinder count or something like that. Maybe just town down the small cylinders outright.
How about electric motors? Are they more or less effective then diesel engines? In before, I don't know much about the game, I bought it yesterday.
This is interesting, but not super helpful since you didn't look at fuel usage. Power is one thing, but if it guzzles fuel, it's not all that useful most of the time. Can you do a follow-up video where you compare them at the most efficient rps?
Is that a new intro? 👀
You forgot that the small cylinder likely have less torque
Please you can make video how build biggest engine in ship?
what is that intro I need that
You should redo this test now with triple the power
The middle engine will be good for aircraft
Fuel guzzlers!
build a Fairbanks Morse Opposed Piston diesel engine in Stormworks
I think it's a case power Vs torque
modular engine are my fav thing
They look nicer imo
Not sure how they actually implemented it, but realistically smaller pistons could give you more RPM, while larger pistons would be better for torque.
