STORM TARP OR TENT? | How to choose between a tarp or tent for camping in stormy weather

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Camping in a storm, tarp or tent? Which is best? I break down the best and the worst of tarps vs tents for camping in a storm or overnighting in inclement weather. There are many shelters to choose from, and whether you choose tarp or tent you will have to deal with the pros and cons of each option. Make sure you know what you're letting yourself in for by trying out both options before you need either your tarp or your tent in an emergency.

    Having grown up in SA and spending many moons in the berg or on game farms and now living in the UK and spending many moons on Dartmoor I am a firm tarp person personally. The versatility and adaptability of the tarp allows me to truly be 1 with the environment I am in which is important for my mental health. I feel I can set up a tarp shelter far quicker than setting up any tent. Cheers for the video and keep them comming

    i just came back from a 3 day tarp camp and i had 2 scorpions and a spider try to crawl into bed with me so i think tents have some advantages but when the rain came pouring down the tarp was more practical and allowed me to keep a fire going. great video as usual Clarise.

    Great input thanks for sharing your story. I also find the scorpions are annoying, they even wake me up when they're trying to climb up the tent walls, never mind when they get into your tarp or sleeping bag! I suppose we can't blame the creepy crawlies, they seek the heat. C

    👍👍👍 Tents vs Tarps. Each has their pros and cons .. very much dependent on, inter alia, the Situation, Area, Length of Stay, etc, etc. A tent together with a tarp is a worthwhile option .. especially when not out alone. The best of both. A 'bedroom' together with an open covered cook / chill / whatever area. Take your pick and adapt accordingly. Thanks for sharing .. take care ..

    Hey Thomas, I like your idea of the tent with an awning. Tarps are very versatile in that way and a great option along with your tent for inclement weather. Thanks! C

    @@LiveReady 👍, my pleasure. Caravanners do it all the time. Sleep in the Van and live / recreate under the attached awning .. except in really bad weather. That's when board games and such and sitting inside the van was the alternative.

    Each product, has its unique advantages. If depends on the situation, and the planning, that you put in. If you are not going far, you can do the tent route. For survival, I would recommend the tarp shelter, but learn the set up types. Great content, as always.

    Hey Stefan! Agreed, each product needs to be matched to the situation. If not, you just need to know how to use what shelter you've got to your advantage. C

    It's fine, I'd take a tarp over a spoon in rain any day. Kabar does sell sporks , pretty good products , can either get them individually or in a pack of 3. Got the 3 pack , have 2 now and my younger sister wanted one for her bag so being the nice brother I gave one up.

    Garrett! I have a spork I should just pack it🙆. You are a nice older brother for handing out sporks. Anyway, you could only ever use one at a time. I should have a look at the Kabar ones though that could be interesting. I saw your mail will get around to it shortly. C

    3:09 That’s why you don’t leave your paracord on your tarp in case you need to deploy it quickly. Manage your cordage. ❤

    I carry both these days when hiking and camping , a one person tent and a large ultralight tarp for a covered work space . In our go bags I have large nylon tarps that can be used to cover the one person puptents . Both very light if you shop around for ultralight gear. Durability can be tricky so carry extra strong duct tape !

    I like that tent, but my concern has also been the bright colors these tents come in... no hiding away in those😂. Scotbot's idea of camo tarp is great although the down side again is xtra gear to carry along. You win some you lose some. Thx Clarise, bushbaby ❤🎉

  • @LiveReady

    @LiveReady

    Жыл бұрын

    Yeah bushbaby😁😜! Just a thought that occurs to me now. One can actually use foliage and plant debris to conceal bright coloured tents or shelters. If you're constantly moving though you would have to reapply your camouflage at each camp and make sure it doesn't pierce your gear, but it can be done. C

    An aspect which has been on my mind for a while. Tarp deployment can be a kicker but the versatility of a tarp will take it a lot more. Though like you say, a tarp stows easier and the weight is a factor. Some sites would rather require a tarp for enclosure's sake and keeping out which should be out. To have a utility tap hand around could improve your coverage and practicality. Thanks for sharing

    In a cold weather environment a tent has to be better. The wind could blow in the cold air if you're in a tarp. I like the pop up tents since they're so easy to move around

    That yellow tent isn't exactly stealthy. But that could be countered with camo netting and using cuts off nearby shrubs. With respect to the difficulty of setting up the tarp because the hard ground, it's actually good that you showed it, as in real world situations you're not always going to have perfect conditions to start with.

  • @LiveReady

    @LiveReady

    Жыл бұрын

    Hey Scott 100% reality is never convenient. We just improvise and make do. I'm also not a fan of bright colours but it has taught me something. If you want to conceal your camp, your best option is to find a well concealed campsite. If your bright coloured tent can't be seen, then the smoke from your fire probably won't be seen either and you won't be within earshot of other people. So for stealth, campsite selection trumps concealed gear. It does help to have "bush" colours though. Glad you enjoyed the video. C
