Storm on Drake Passage - MV Ushuaia
On our way on the MV Ushuaia to Antarctica, we had to cross the Drake Passage. The start was calm and beautiful, but soon a storm was coming up. We experienced some magical moments on 12 meter high waves.

Imagine working an old wooden ship in these seas, climbing up and down the mast to set sails in all weather, wondering if you'd live long enough to ever be dry again. Brave, brave men.
Thank you for posting this video! I was on the MV Ushuaia early in 2017 crossing the Drake passage. It was so rough the first night that I kept getting slammed against the wall and railing of my bed all night long and got no sleep. So the next morning I had housekeeping give me some extra pillows and using those and some spare clothes I stuffed them under my mattress to make a lengthwise trough in the center of the mattress to hold me in one position for sleeping.

Must be ultimate adventure of a life time.Brilliant videography,Thanks a lot.
That is an awesome video!! I went to Antarctica back in March 2017, aboard the G Expedition. We got very lucky and got the "Drake Lake" both ways, and we got down to Antarctica in record time!!!
Really good video, this absolutely captured how crazy drakes passage is
Muy buenas las imágenes, que lindo al final la música de fondo del MAESTRO argentino Astor Piazzolla.
Wow what waves! They even looked good on video which is rare.
What a experience! Crazy and unforgetable ❤️❤️
Thank You for sharing this video. I remember how that ship is when I served on the MV Ushuaia when was known as the NOAA ship R-103 Researcher. Your video minded me of a storm off the coast of Nova Scotia.
Thank you for sharing this awesome video! You did an amazing job filming it! I felt like I was there almost. What a fascinating adventure going through those storms! The last shot of you guys on the ice was beautiful. What a completely majestic place to see!! Thank you again!

That's an angry ocean right there, 5:14 is it really good shot of those 12 meter waves. WOW
Wow what a great experience, I would have been more worried at the time but what a brilliant story and video to share & enjoy with everyone once home safely. Thanks for sharing with us. Cheers.
Unbelievable. I was getting queasy just watching. I would love to put this on my bucket list. And the perspective at the end from that bluff looking down at the ship. It looks like a toy. Thank you for posting!
Great video! What an amazing experience!

THE CAMERAMAN ALWAYS SURVIVES.
I was on the MV Ushuaia in March ‘17 and was expecting this but had a 4m swell on the way down but Drakes Lake on the way home. Had the greatest trip.
Thank you for uploading this. It looks so exciting. I have to do this one day.
Omg 😱 beautiful!!!🤗🤗🤗🤗

That was excellent, thanks for post. Looking at booking this in two years time
6:18 there's one wave towering over its neighbours, just right of the centre of the screen in the background. Looks like a candidate for a freakwave to me. Brilliant video!

A rogue wave would be a lot higher then the waves you see there. From 6 to 10 times the current wavelength, so the freakwave would be between 72 and 120 meters high there. You would notice that very clear, since that would cover the whole ship. Check this one for size comparison: /watch?v=_akyfMp9ln8
The sea or passage of Drake begins in Cabo de Hornos - Chile and ends in the Antarctic peninsula 🤩
SI TAN SOLO VER EL VIDEO ES ATERRADOR, IMAGINATE VIVIRLO ADENTRO DE ESE BARCO
Very scary. I am glad everyone reached safely back home.
This is like sailing in Faroe Island waters..on a good day
Looks great fun
hello❤❤ this is beautiful ❤❤
Lindo vídeo.
Wat een mooie reis,....
Super super good
good filming.subbed)
0:58. I can’t believe those are 7 metre waves either. I’ve been in waves that high often enough. I think that’s the expected wave height. 3:19 Why did these people buy a ticket. Reading books a cell phones! Look around you! This was supposed to be why you’re here!
We're a little seasick. Drake Passage, "Can someone hold my beer again, please, there's work to be done!"
.. my head is already spinning.. while watching
Come get me when we make it thru. I'll be at the bar in the mean time.
Как бы там не было в рубке всегда самое спокойное место)
Interesting!
Hi Chris! WOW! It is impressive they let you on the Bridge! I am like you, I like the rough sea. I would eat a big bowl of spaghetti and tease the sick people. The way the water moves is so beautiful. You are so lucky to take such a wonderful cruise. When the ship rolls does it tickle your stomach?
Where did the boat leave from in Chile? Was the trip expensive? What did you do while in Antarctica? Thanks.
I want to go to Antarctica so badly, but I'm afraid rough water like this would scare me too much!😥

Yes, It can be very rough (for 2days one way;-). It is part of the adventure to see Antarctica. But when you arrive in antarctica, you forget every wave that you have made nauseous. Antarctica is something special!!!

12m monster wave, scary.
Scary 😮😮😮
Wow! Thank you for posting. May rethink my bucket list. 🤢
What month of the year was it ?
This is defines sea sickness
From Pearl Harbor to olongapo Philippines we hit a typhoon, the waves were so tall a porthole on the port side 30’ above the waterline failed. The starboard stabilizer ripped off and made contact with one of the screws. Like a card in a bicycle wheel, only way louder… rat tat tat.. rat tat tat… tat rat tat all the way to the Philippines for dry dock. Great times
As pessoas numa viagem dessa, tão distantes entre si. Umas no celular outras lendo e dormindo. Q pena, ninguém interagindo entre si. Muita frieza. Q horror! Passeio lindo, interessante. Dos sonhos. Cheio de emoções. E as pessoas frias e distentes entre si.
hay que tener valor
Why are people sitting there reading ? A stormy Drake is one of the natural wonders of the world. They should be outside taking it all in. One or two may get washed overboard but that’s part of the Drake experience.
👍

MV Ushuaia Expedition Ship. We went there at the beginning of february
Most people that were in the Navy, have been in worst than this. I know I was in the north Atlantic. The whole bow of our destroyer kept disappearing into the ocean. We were taking 25 degree lists and they said we would roll at 27 degree lists. Everyone on the bridge was a little uneasy. I was a Quartermaster.,

Wat je kunt doen is de plaatselijke reisbureaus mailen of er nog last minutes tickets zijn. Zo hadden wij voor de helft van de prijs de tickets. Je moet wel flexibel zijn qua reistijd.
Nice video but first rule of videography - don't pan the camera too much. It makes it difficult to watch.

There are people inside the ship, sitting on the couches and chairs and PLAYING WITH THEIR STUPID PHONES instead of watching the ocean as they motor through Drake's passage!!! What a bunch of losers!!!!
This is nothing. I paddled my small canoe all the way around Antarctica one winter with eighty foot waves just for something to do. All I had was an RC Cola and peanut butter sandwich.
Nope.
What click bait!!!!!! At no time was the weather ever above a Beaufort Sea State 8!!!!!!
Bloody horrid
Hell noooo hell no way thats so freaking scary
