Stopping Illegal Mining in the Amazon with Satellite Data
Ғылым және технология
How is new tech helping protect the rainforest? Neil deGrasse Tyson and comedian Chuck Nice learn about how space technology is helping uncover illegal gold mines and protecting the Amazon, with illegal mining expert Larissa Rodrigues and Earth researcher Jennifer Holm.

We explore how using space technology and satellite images can help us understand Earth’s surface. Learn how the democratization of satellite imagery is helping crowdsource data. Larissa Rodrigues, a São Paulo researcher in energy and land use, tells us about how satellite images help discover illegal gold mining operations in the Amazon Rainforest. We discuss the impacts of these operations on the surrounding environments and what they look for in satellite images. What are the main challenges in shutting down illegal mines?
Next, we are joined by Jennifer Holm, Earth Research Scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, to learn about the Amazon’s contribution to the climate. What is a Carbon Sink? Is the Amazon the lungs of the planet? How do we incentivize countries to keep their rainforests? Learn about deforestation, plans to reforest the Amazon, and how LIDAR gets used to see through the jungle canopy. How can ordinary people help save the Amazon?

If you would like people to be able to put funds into saving the Amazon rain forest and giveing loggers and miners new jobs I'd sugest you put Paul Rosolie's Jungle keepers in a card in the corner of the video! I've ben listening to him a lot when he guests on other podcasts and the man has some interesting stuff to say. He even says he alwayd backs up his words with photo evidence (a lot on Instagram) and research, for example; They measure the ammount of chemicals found in gold minings inside of anaconda snakes to understand where the mining is the worst.

As much as I love NDT. He doesn't really challenge the establishment. He knows our military is the largest polluter on the planet. and I never heard him say a word about it. And he seems to be on the side of big Pharma when it comes to the vaccine. Or call attention to the fact that Sciences is for sale. If you have money, you can buy some science. He still wants to be able to go on the networks. and talk shows. and rub shoulders with the Enemy. He knows what's up.

I live in a gold mining town of Kirkland Lake Ontario Canada. Our town used to have several lakes, now we have the slimes, created by the mining process. Old slimes were re-preocessed when gold prices went up and they discovered more gold left behind then was processed originally. At one time our population was pver 20,000 now it's at about 8,000. nobody wants to live here even though they work here. I should mension that the mines were re-opened a few years ago. polution is a problem.

Very important to note that the Amazon forest also delivers most of the rain that falls way far down the whole central and southeast areas of the continent. It is called the sky rivers.

❤ Thank you all again! A great way to learn and be informed! Love you Neil and Chuck❣️
So sad seeing much deforestation and destruction. The landscape has changed forever...
Mining has uglified Alaska/Yukon as well. And we watch it every week on Discovery and other channels. All those gold shows.

Would love to see a video about “cloud seeding”?
Interesting info about how to know taking pics of forests using different wavelengths, to know that there is a website taking pictures of forests and how trees can survive droughts. AMAZING!
Mr. DeGrasse Tyson, Chuck and all the people from Startalk, thank you for this episode. Illegal gold mining is not only a problem in Brazil and Peru, remember that a 7.7% of the Amazon forest is in Bolivia, that is more than 500900m2 that is also already affected by illegal gold mining. As you talk in this episode the use of mercury in illegal mining is making a tremendous effect in people, mainly indigenous people. Satellite data could be just referential, but data does not lie. You asked why the government of Brazil does not act against illegal gold mining, and talking from the perspective of Bolivia, illegal gold mining seems to be almost sponsored by the actual pollitical regime. I would not bring political talk here because here we talk about objective true by corroborate data and information to learn, and I dare to say that satellite data from Bolivian forest would bring similar images like the ones from Brazil and Peru and the information about illegal gold mining is causing tremendous effects from mercury contamination in water, food and then people. If there is possible, I suggest to take satellite information about deforestation by fire. In the last 5 years, large extensions of forest between Brazil and Bolivia has been devastated by fire, fire caused by humans. People in amazon areas has been causing fires under the argument of getting more area to cultivate alternative food… Another episode about the effects of deforestation verified by satellite data could be very revealing. Again, thank you for this episode. I will keep looking up.
brilliant episode
Cobalt/uranium mines in the Congo, gold mines in the Amazon, jade mines in Indonesia how bleak the future seems. This was an excellent episode. Neil and Chuck we love you!
So much hype to see a Brazilian being invited to StarTalk! Congratulations, Larissa Rodrigues! ✨✨✨
Chuck's point was very excellent 33:00!!
I've got to admit I do like, admire and respect these two. Kudos to them & God bless.
Neil's a cool and very intellectual individual, but I personally like this startalk show because of both Neil and Chuck, Neil teaches us something to learn, and Chuck...ohh Chucky boy... cracking his out of nowehere jokes on the side makes my day, he's quarky in his own way, love the guy, hope to see more from startalk, btw im pretty interested in this apophis asteroid, please up this, peace out✌.

Great episode! Thanks for bringing some top brazilian talent to help bring awareness to this terrible reality.
Less vegetations... Right, meantime going to Home Depot and Lowe's and no one never ask where all that woods comes from... Never require more transparency.... See IKEA for example... They are not transparent at all anymore.

I wonder who's making these illegal activities profitable enough for these people to be doing it
Chuck is not half wrong. We learn that roots grow and move away from the Sun. Planting between the cracks will promote a competitive gene, and you'll have more success. It is EXACTLY why we see more stuff appearing to grow, where it shouldn't
Chuck is wonderful!!
I love that this gives a voice to scientists that we would’ve never heard. More importantly I love that both Neil and Chuck aren’t afraid to rip a phony scientist apart! Love it guys
Skyfi wow thank you guys ❤
In our geography textbooks we teach our students that forests are are the 'lungs of the earth'. But after listening to your conversation think that we have to change our whole concept about our ecosystem services.

I work in a copper mine and something to think about when imagining consumables in our daily lives. "If it's not grown, it's mined." Now think hard about that, how much the things you consume every day is mined.
Bom Dia from Brasil, thank you for this topic, enough theft and destruction of the Amazon please. It is a precious thing and must be managed properly.
Important stuff.
Love ⭐️ talk show
Yes gold has good conductance which is useful for electronics but copper and silver are better. The real value in gold is because it doesn't corrode so electrical contacts maintain a good connection.
RIP 🪦 Dr. Daniel C. Dennett - philosopher, scientist, teacher, and genuine nice guy. (28 Mar 1942 - 19 Apr 2024, aged 82).
@StarTalk I finally solved the standard particle model! I merged the standard particle model and string theory together in a new supersymetric particle theory called “multi-tier supersymmetry model” where supersymmetric particle exist in different numbers of dimensions. (I.e. 5th dimensional supersymmetric particles, 6th dimensional supersymmetric particles, and so on). Under this theory, 11 or more dimensions exist. As well as the multiple tiers of supersymmetric particles. Graviton may actually be a “super-Higgs boson” in 5 dimensions and “dark matter” is just 5th dimensional matter. “Dark energy” is actually made out of “anti-gravitons”.
Chuck is essential 0:48
@33:00 What Chuck is talking about is what we learned in the 5th grade during the 70's and 80's. Do they still teach this kind of science today?
22:17 For as much as it's primates liking shiny things, I think it's fair to say it runs a bit deeper as well. Most every major industry is reliant on the metal industry, from infrastructure to everything that's manufactured currently in production at factories, to the machines to even refine those resources. Without metal production everything would collapse, and hence it's more to sell to that market and make money in that sector imo, than to just sell "shiny" gold every time. Although that's completely valid of course, but those are my thoughts on why, for metals not being sold to become jewelry and stuff.
Very good. Clip. It summaries what the hukanity should be doing in order to make the world a better place for all ecosystems. I wanted to know what are your remarks on the Gaza-Hamas War?

4:26 Thank you for bringing this topic to an international platform. Amazon region also includes Colombia, Bolivia and Venezuela. The Amazon jungle is the lung of the world and the ignorance of these greedy companies don’t allow them to understand that!

Random unrelated to this video question: our solar system isn’t stationary in space right? We are apparently getting pulled towards a great attractor… If that is the case, then if we wanted to travel to an alien civilization, wouldn’t it be somehow faster for us to find a craft or something that can sit in one place and let that civilization come to us in a sense? Or if there was even a possibility of traveling against the pull of the great attractor would that not be infinitely faster to reach the civilization?
*Yooo* Love your Work Neil! I show my Niece all the time :) We tried to be your *3 Millionth* :D Good luck this year 😄
Sup chuck! Good topic ❤
Every Year and All year We Should Teach stuff like this here
Net zero will never ever be zero. We would be lucky, very lucky to see over 90% or even 80% net zero.
There tends to be this over-emphasis about stopping deforestation of the Amazon as though that's the _only_ garden we have on Earth. Keep that intact and we're somehow good. Attention should also be given to other regions of the planet and re-forestation efforts.
14:09 I’m an American currently in São Paulo and I can pretty much attest to all she’s said to this point. She’s a doctor so I’m not questioning her knowledge, but for example, there are areas of the country (mostly rural) where people just burn trash. From what I gather, there’s no adequate waste management system in certain regions so the easiest thing to do is to let it burn baby burn! The idea of people doing what they want, stripping the land for all it’s worth then walking away like it’s someone else’s problem. They have an expression for this - “sem tempo irmão!” For my meme aficionados, it loosely translates to “ain’t nobody got time for dat!”
Startalk makes me regret not becoming an astrophysicist. Like why did I just become a regular civilian lol
They kept trying to warn us in the 90s when we were kids!
Interesting episode that is a bit different than the usually ones. Using satellites to look for things. I don't know about regulations on wavelengths broadcast in regards to purpose. Active sight vs passive sight. I wonder if wavelengths for purpose are regulated but only in regard to that purpose? At what point do we wonder how wavelengths interact with life in general and are there spectrum enforcement agencies that are consistent globally? I know various agencies or structures monitor wavelengths but how much of the spectrum is monitored in total with a timeframe that is protective to life?
Dear dog, I love these videos.
Illuminating
Very sad the Atmospheric rivers in the south causing floods, and the desertification that is happening in the north from deforestation is the worst drought in history for them. I would love Dr Tyson to explain Atmospheric Rivers and the "Tragedy of Commons". Easily explained here when education in our schools like Science, Math and Physics is so important but lacking. Especially here in Florida school systems where we ban books based on facts.
11:33😳 This along with fracking. Completely putting nearby communities in danger of toxic runoffs over time.

The equation is not balanced since we can't grow /replace trees as fast as we burn them. We will have no trees left in the end. Plus remember it's releasing carbon that we already want stored away as they said in the video.
Let me correct the host, Brazil indeed owns The Amazon Forest within its borders, its literally a Brazilian State called AMAZONAS. Can you imagine foreigners saying: " We use to think US owns Alaska" or Montana or North Dakota, or Texas?
Star talk, Neil - I want to say that these people are noble.. to a degree watching your family age and never get to experience peace is hard and seeing everyone enjoy life with expensive meals and nice things must feel like they have a huge barrier in between them. We should make solar farms for the “dead land” and we should teach them how not to use mercury.
That star thing was cool

WE TALKING ABOUT REAL WORLD ON PLANET STUFF FINALLY!!!
Paying for someone to NOT do some thing is extortion or robbery, "your money or your life" is the classical stickup line for a reason. Tell them to not do it or WE will punish them in a way that will hurt them far more than the gold would pay them. We should not tollerate extortion in any way shape or form.
Brasil!
