Stopping at McDonald's in 1989

Ойын-сауық

Nelson Sullivan was on a road trip from Atlanta to his hometown of Kershaw, South Carolina, when he stopped at this McDonald's in Washington, Georgia, for some lunch. The stop after that was to see his Aunt Nancy at the Presbyterian Home. Video by Nelson Sullivan

Nelson himself died tragically from a heart attack on July 4, 1989- only three days after quitting his full time to so that he could produce his own cable television show of his footage. =- What a legend. He faced a lot of hardships in life.

Wow, I remember the old decor in the 80s and 90s McDonald’s … the feel of the wooden high chair, plastic seating, wooden accent pieces, the pictures they’d have hanging on the wall, the soft lighting - made eating in there actually something the family could look forward to because it had such a cozy feeling. They were all laid out very similar and remember my family and I would always seat along the windows towards the back exit at most locations. Now, you go in a McD’s and it’s fluorescent, drab, grey, and corporate. No play areas, just a cold hard seating area that no one bothers to dine in and relax.

Every now and then I come back to see Nelson. I still don't know how he decided on filming himself in the way he did. I know he passed away the same year this video was made and I guess the whole content he made, which literally for us now is time travelling is really reflecting on what he was. He truly was a remarkable man and a very unique persona. I am born in 1993, so he was already gone when I came along, his videos however never fail to make me feel in a very very strange way. His vibration is very different and he makes me feel like he is talking to me, personally. I know all the viewers out there feel the same way. Rest easy Nelson!

I visited NYC as a teenager on a class photography trip back in 1988 and he was probably out and about taking a video of something interesting that weekend. I know he was friends with this avant garde photographer that I had read about and was interested in her work around the same time. Love this guy and he will live on forever because of his slice of life videos. Thank goodness.

Another great channel you should see is Len Enders. He posts footage of his daily activities beginning when he was fifteen in 1986 WA up to 2010. He kinda stopped when smartphones became popular. Some people might think this was not a normal rendition of what a normal person would be like at that time though (they were a little punk), but it's very honest. Very little posing, just like Sulivan. I love watching them. It seems these guys had a good intuition of the future. It's easy to love them as we see so much of their lives being shared.

This was definitely NOT the normal way of life back in 89'. In 89' rap music was in it's second stage you might say as break dancing had also already passed. People had pagers or beepers we would call them. Cell phones or the internet hadn't came widespread as of yet, but party lines were around. I missed the 80's, they were good times. You would just hear about a party through word of mouth and just go to it or people often hung in certain spots to drink.
