I went to a huge "you are only an ID number to us" texan suburban high school growing up, so seeing a smaller lunch room makes me really envious. I bet it was harder to go through drama though, because everyone knows each other! And the back room in the caf with the couches - was that like, a seniors only space, or would people rush to claim it every day? so funny, we would never have couches like that in any of the schools I've worked in since 2017

The back room was the Senior Lounge. It was only for eligible seniors, those who are not failing classes, on suspension, double secret probation, etc. Underclassmen were generally not allowed, though by the end of the school year those rules often lapsed as the juniors would be taking over next and they needed to know all the secrets.

It was great. I was 14 in 1991. No cell phones, no internet...hardly anyone I knew had a computer. We didn't even have a VCR until around 1990 or so. I think I still have some VHS tapes of videos and stuff I recorded off MTV. No flat-screen TV's. We didn't have a cordless phone, not even a push-button phone. We had a rotary phone...no call waiting, no answering machine. Didn't have a cd player, only cassettes and records. I still have some cassettes of songs I recorded from the radio, lol. Great times.

Thanks for sharing!! I was born in 1977, and I grew up in the 80s and 90s'. I am a big "going back in time" person so I love all this type of stuff. I love seeing the styles, the clothing, the hair styles, the way people talked and acted, all the things that were around back then that aren't around anymore.

@The505 I think the Internet and smart phones have a lot to do with it. Privacy is nonexistent anymore, and people are constantly afraid of being surreptitiously recorded. It just makes us all the more susceptible to mindless groupthink and fearful of violating ridiculous politically correct norms.

I would do anything to return to the 90s. We were so much happier back then - life was a lot simpler. When people made plans, they kept them. When you were bored, you didn't reach out to a screen. It didn't matter what brand of clothing you wore. No-one felt entitled to opportunities or ownership; you were happy with what you had. Young people had greater self-esteem, because they weren't concerned with how others judged them. Instant gratification wasn't a thing. Most importantly, people had greater empathy, because socialising had to be done either face-to-face or on the telephone (as long as your parents weren't using the line...)

Woooow. You are living in a reality created in your own head. Rosy Retrospection. I was in school then and goooood gawd, it did matter what you wore. You needed to have high top Nike or Reebok, Doc Martins were the shit later on, Tommy Hilfiger, and on and on. People procrastinated as much as they do now. I know I did and others did. When you were bored, many would turn on a screen. MTV, Nintendo, etc. People still felt they were owed things. Lots of spoiled kids back then like now. Young people committed suicide and had depression like now. In fact, at a much higher rate than now. www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/66/wr/mm6630a6.htm Instant gratification WAS a fucking thing. Murder rates are lower now than then. Looks like kids now have more empathy. lol Stooooop. This is sickeningly nostalgic bias.

The idea that social interaction between teenagers no longer exists is absurd. I'm sure that at least 90% of the people commenting about it are people in their 30s-40s who haven't observed typical life in a high school for decades. Teenagers still talk to each other with their voices all the damn time.

Every decade bleeds into the other. Look at the early 1960s. Basically an extension of the '50s.

Watch a high school video on here from 1986 and you will see a HUGE difference. If anything 89-92 were very similar but you can spot the styles/culture changing. It's pretty cool.

You can practically smell the decaying 80s and the aroma of the newborn 90s.

if I had gone up to all of my classmates and started talking to them like this, EVERYONE would say how weird I am. but it’s normal then and I like that. I wish it was less cliquey and judgmental in our schools now. I grew up lacking friends that could’ve been my friends, in fear of judgment

I was bored during my highschool days. There were some fun moments but I couldn't wait to graduate and get out of there . Same room, hall ways , same faces . I remember some fights broke out at the end of my school year party

Very early 90s kept 80s fashion up until the mid 90s. I guess in the 80s it was all about 'power' or something like that, that's why the hair was big, jackets and even shirts had shoulder pads for girls, and everything was neon and colourful
