    @@FatherFish I skip the heater and the filters. Sometimes I put in a matten or UGF, my NANF tank has both. I've been using Prime ever since my local water treatment plant added chloramine to the system. I've been keeping tanks since the early 1970s, and replicating nature has been the least headaches. Now that electricity has gotten so expensive, I buy new fish once my apartment gets to 80°, and by the time they have had a second batch of babies, the offspring acclimate to the cooler winter water. I make sure blackworms and microfauna are reproducing in the tank (including planaria 😱) are reproducing in the tank before I add NANF shrimp, and later I add fish..... Food growing in the tank, plants cleaning the water, shrimp snails and worms cleaning the tank, fish need minimal input from me, beyond weekly treats of brine shrimp, grindal worms, etc (in the summer). Mosquitoes provide fish with plenty of protein, lol Winters, the fish just aren't as hungry... I like the ACO Easy Fry food and Xtreme Krill flakes to supplement carrots, zucchini, spinach, squash and the occasional mushroom. Our Ornate ornata keeps fish populations under control, if they aren't quality to sell. Happy ecosystems, low cost, and less stress. So glad you made a channel, your doppleganger was my adopted dad. We lost him a decade ago, and now I get to binge your videos and feel like he's talking with me... About fish instead of his passion, dogs... but still the same cadence and you look like his identical twin.

    Love your style of fishkeeping. After keeping fish for years in tanks with gravel and artificial plants, I finally got into natural, dirt bottom, planted tanks, and I have to say it's both easier and more rewarding. Can't believe I ever thought a nature aquarium was "out of my league." Nature does it best.

    You are so right on this! I started my tank (6 gallon) with a 1" dirt, 2-3" sand on top and a bunch of plants. I made the mistake of buying all those silly chemicals and it totally ruined my tank. I ended up starting over and using Father fish methods and my tank is awesome! I have 5 dwarf corys and 4 cherry shrimp and my tank runs great. Water parameters are perfect. I keep my filter clean and do a 20% water change once in a while if my water gets green from too much direct sunlight. That's it. Throw all those chemicals away!

    The thing is as a new fish keeper you get told so many different conflicting advice. Sometimes it makes you dizzy and, confuses the hell out of you. But this video is totally correct. The more natural you keep the tank without all these Chems you put in the better the plants and the fish are going to be. I used to scared of putting wood I found outside and plants outside into the tank as I was told by numerous magazines and KZread. Channels that this would be extremely harmful to my fish. How wrong was I and how much better it was for the fish. You see some of these scapes and for me they look sterile too neat too tidy , like one piece of moss that’s growing gets trimmed back as it doesn’t look like the owners hair cut anymore.

    Been fish keeping since I was 14 and now I'm 55. I try to tell people they don't need as much as they think when they start a tank. I do use water conditioner because you can't get the powder form where I am, but I get API and not Prime. API is much cheaper here than Prime and you know some new fish keepers don't even know that Prime is just a dechlorinator, but is over marketed as a cure all for things like ammonia spikes. You only get those if you haven't got enough good bacteria in there and given the tank enough time to age before dumping in a heap of fish. It's all about common sense. If a fish dies and it's a relatively new tank or a large fish you need to remove it or you get ammonia. If you don't have enough plants, you get ammonia and nitrates. I use sand, but I also use very fine natural gravel as well. Thinking of joining your discord. Sounds like a group that actual has common sense.

    I use soil, sand and gravel- in several sizes mixed into the sand. I leave part of the tank sand and part with gravel on top. Every body of water has these ingredients. I have never had a single problem with gravel but never use it without sand.

    I personally have a mix of fine gravel, AquaSolum (humate) and crushed coral (all mixed together). I haven't had any issues at all, ever. Is he mainly warning about using an inert, gravel-only substrate?

  • @FatherFish

    @FatherFish

    Жыл бұрын

    The primary issue with gravel is it does not prevent waste and nutrients from entering the water column, thereby fouling the water. Sand holds detritus and soil below by preventing water flow through the substrate. Gravel does not slow water movement, allowing anything in the gravel to be washed into open water.

  • @bl0pez772

    @bl0pez772

    Жыл бұрын

    @@FatherFish I do have a relatively deep layer of this mix (around 3-5 inches) and I can visualize the detritus slowly making its way through the substrate to the bottom over time. I don't do water changes, and have found that I don't really need to since the tank is heavily planted and has a thick layer of floating plants at the top. So I don't have a reason to agitate the substrate, and due to the plants there is a place for the excess nutrients to be absorbed. The gravel is very small. Would you still say this is bad?

    I no longer use a heater in my 3 tanks, (I have a ten, 29, and 60 gallon). My fish seem to be thriving since I stopped using heaters three years ago following multiple heater failures. I doubt that the store where I bought the fish use heaters in their tanks either. I live in New England here in the US. My tank temperatures hover between 72 to 74 degrees, in the winter, and 74 to 78 in the summer. I keep the temperature, in my house, at around 72 to 74 degrees all year. If the fish were in the wild, I believe they would have to adjust in water temperatures that may fluctuate many more degrees than I provide in my aquariums. Since the fish I keep were probably tank bred, their environment may have been rather controlled, but probably not as high and consistent as 78 to 82 degrees. Most of the fish stores I visit have average air temperatures in the low 70s.

  • @someguy3167

    @someguy3167

    The reason for keeping them at a higher temperature is it helps their immune systems, and makes it impossible for a few parasites and illnesses to even become an issue.

    I have always used gravel in my aquariums. I've been doing so for 30 years. I prefer not to use sand as it compacts, and my plants don't grow so well. I always place organic potting soil in a new setup, and cap it with atleast 3 inches of gravel.

  • @FatherFish

    @FatherFish

    Жыл бұрын

    Very much appreciate your post Owen. Certainly by increasing the depth of the cap gravel becomes more productive by restricting soil from entering the water column. Good to hear 3" works well. Gravel will permit precipitation by mulm more quickly than sand. That is a benefit. Sand does not compact any more than gravel. It does restrict water flow, just as does a deeper gravel cap. You have caused me to rethink my position on gravel. If 3" is effective that could be a game changer. I had believed nothing less than 5" was tenable.

  • @FatherFish

    The primary reason is gravel does not allow for a normal breakdown of waste because it allows waste to remain in the water column. This is why it must be cleaned regularly. Sand actually separates waste from the water column and breaks it down naturally.

    I do use gravel in my 40 gallon breeder but it isn't typical "aquarium gravel". I use volcanic basalt that comes with some water in the bag keeping beneficial bacteria like the ones in a healthy filter to help the breakdown of ammonia as well as the minerals it contains for plant growth. I don't really do water changes in the tank, My plants grow well, my fish shrimp and newts are all doing well and it's a cold water system so if the power goes out only the filter and light goes out so I wouldn't be too worried about anything happening other than my danios getting bored because the filter current stopped.

    As far as the variety of foods, is that not the most natural way to feed? A wild fish is going to find, let's say, a cricket for breakfast then maybe a small fry in the afternoon and a "fish flake" scrap from a larger fish feeding as a midnight snack. I've been giving mine a combination of fish flakes, sinking pellets, live crickets, and the occasional guppy. They really liked the vegetable-fed crickets we've been raising

    What about chlorine in the water? Not chloramines, but just simple chlorine? One would need to age water with an air stone running for a 3-5 days or bring it close to boiling temp for the chlorine to evaporate. That would have been waay too much of a hustle with just one 40 gal tank. I use Hikari Ultimate (moved away from Prime a few months back), and my fish and plants seem pretty happy. I add Ultimate to the water and age it for at least 48 hours in food grade 5-gal buckets prior to water change. Is there a downside? Thanks in advance!
