Stop Using Your Phone When Pumping Gas

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

The average person spends about 4 hours a day on their phone. That means in a single week, our eyes are glued to the screen for over an entire day! While there’s nothing wrong with a little screen time every now and then, there are some places where your phone should stay in your pocket…
Have you ever been texting your friends as you got in the car and forgot you left your coffee on the roof? Imagine something like that, and you might have an idea why so many gas stations have signs up warning customers to stay off their phones as they’re pumping gas. Also, some people believe the device can shoot out radio waves or sparks and catch the gas on fire? Let's find out if that's true!

SUMMARY:
- They put these signs up to keep distracted drivers from pulling away from the pump with the nozzle still attached! When that happens, you risk gas leaking out all over the place, and then there’s the chance of it lighting up.
- Fortunately, this isn’t as much of a threat as it perhaps used to be. Most modern gas pumps feature breakaway nozzles that will seal the pump if they’re pulled on too hard. ]
- Either way, the driver, or at least their insurance company, is still responsible for any equipment they break. If the driver’s lucky, they’ll only need to pay for the breakaway mechanism to be replaced.
- Most airlines require you to switch your phone to airplane mode. The signals produced by wireless devices can interfere with the plane’s electronics.
- This phone interference isn’t too much of a problem anymore thanks to modern technology, but it was a major concern in the 1990s.
- Devices from that era were notorious for their ability to interfere with nearby electronics, and that was a risk airlines weren’t willing to take.
- There’s also the issue of radio waves interfering with a plane’s communications. Again, it’s nothing too dramatic.
- The third reason why you’re asked to turn off your phone on the plane has to do with your wireless carrier.
- Cell towers were designed around some basic assumption about where their users are going to be located. Thousands of feet in the air close to the speed of sound was not one of them.
- The good news is, these risks are all fairly remote, and there’s never been a major accident caused by someone using their phone on a plane.
- Studies have shown that electronic devices can tamper with some of the more sensitive hospital equipment.
- The scientists concluded that 3 ft was far enough away to be safe. Although, they do recommend keeping mobile phones out of the room entirely just to be on the super safe side!

The gasoline explosion scare started by an incompetent old fire chief from Fishkill NY in the 90's , he made the claim locally and then CBS picked it up and it went viral (although inaccurate) . You left out on item about the aircraft , its also the fact that you are flying at high altitudes and over a wide area of cell-sites . You can't actually bring up more than one at a time but you can interfere with dozens or hundreds if they are on your frequency and tie up many as they try to connect .

Altimeters use air pressure to measure altitude. That's why most metropolitan areas have an automated weather broadcast that includes pressure setting so all the planes are compensating the same amount for the constantly changing barometric pressure. That flight simulator should be modeling that adjustment and implementation might vary depending on which airplane it's simulating. A little RF from a wireless, WiFi or Bluetooth connection should have no effect. Radio based instrumentation like the transponder, weather radar and navigation instruments might be more vulnerable.

2007...Yes. Cellphones affect our hospital devices. Coz back then, all mobile pionds have analog signals. Nowadays, cellphones does not affect our medical devices. In fact, medical devices and walls affects the cellphones signal. The only reason we keep the " No Cellphones Sign" is because we don't want patients disturb.👍

I dont think anyone,s gonna stop texting at the gas station any time soon, while drivers cant keep their hands away from their phones, even while driving.

I still remember every time we were at a gas station our bus driver said to not use your phone when pumping gasoline looking at the highschoolers so incase it would explode we would always go outside the bus LOL

There is an episode of "Mythbusters" that disproved the theory about using a mobile phone while in the gas station can ignite gasoline vapors. They concluded that STATIC ELECTRICTY is to blame (and cellphones are in the clear). The notion of "airplane mode" is a generally accepted thing for airplane passengers. This is because the radio navigation equipment in the aircraft operates at the same frequency as mobile phones.

What's really terrifying about this is how infrequently these people must check their mirrors. Clearly they're driving around oblivious.

in my town there’s this thing where the gas person pumps your car while you are still in it. you don’t need to pump the gas on your own, the gas person will do it for you.

How does pumping fuel work in the United States? Do y'all pay first, or pay after? I'm asking this, coz in South Africa. We pay AFTER they have poured the fuel AND taken out that item. If ever I drive away with that thing, it's the gas attendant's fault. Coz why would he or she let me pay, when he hasn't taken it out???
