I agree with the Canon M50 Mk II prices. I just bought 2 w/kit lenses. Now I have total of 3. Also bought a Sigma 16mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary Lens. I can now shoot really crispy videos. Your content is right on the money and good to follow.

Ditto on the Canon M50 MKII...if you can find some used or new buy it. Clean HDMI out, great 1080P AF (so-so) in 4K but the video looks great upscaled. We use 4 of those for client podcast projects.

Very nice video as always. Yes, I have a question...being old school as I am, is there an advantage of recording right into a laptop as opposed to just recording onto the memory card in the camera? I've not made this kind of content yet, so just loading video footage from a memory card is what I am used to. It's just a drag and drop proposition, but I've not captured footage straight into a laptop. Also, what program are you using to capture the footage? In my mind, there is the difference of using a program versus using a camera. Using just the camera, there's one physical button to push to start recording and stop recording. I don't know what's involved with utilizing a program for capturing the footage with a program, so I have to plead ignorance here.

Great questions! Maybe I should make a video that covers all that :D In short, there isn't a benefit to recording to computer but some people prefer it since they then don't have to buy SD cards and manage that. It does come with quality loss, so I usually prefer to go SD card for highest quality. In my time working with many clients, I hear many prefer a simple process to just record to their computer so they can send it off to an editor faster. It comes down to workflow, which as mentioned comes at a slight quality loss. But some people don't mind it.

@@FellowFilmmaker - Ah, since I do my own editing as well I don't think about those who are sending their footage to an editor. You are more in touch with what a wider range of people are doing for their content than I am. I'm coming from a narrative film background, and that's what I know about shooting video and is where I will draw my method from for KZread content. I am sure a lot of people would like to just record to their computer and already have their audio and video in the same file to make editing easier. As long as they are not using their laptop cam and mic, as you mentioned, I am sure they are able to get something presentable. There are also a lot of people doing video recording for the first time and there is a big learning curve just to deal with that, yet alone attempting to do any kind of SFX or "fancy" things. You've got to walk before you can run. Thanks for the response. You provided a lot of good info for those looking to get started. It took me years to learn that lighting is even more important than the camera. I've been delving into learning, through research and practice, as much as I can about lighting particularly for narrative film. This past weekend a short film I did lighting on qualified for screening at the Cannes Film Festival in France. I'll be going there in May for the event. I did the lighting with another guy who is big into lighting and we are learning from each other and getting new ideas as well when we combine our thoughts. Having "Cannes" on my resume will be nice, and my picture in front of their step-and-repeat wall will look good on my website. ;)

One thing to be aware of when choosing a camera - the latency from the HDMI port makes a huge difference. You want as little latency as possible especially if you are using this for zoom calls. Sadly as a Panasonic fan I can't recommend their cameras for this. Look to Sony/Canon instead.

05:50 - Very strange video title.... The fact is that the Canon EOS M50 does not have a pure HDMI output without additional technical data. You have a $600 camera (Canon EOS R50) with a $700 lens (Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM Art). This is already a budget of $1300 without taking into account all the additional equipment including expensive lighting. At the moment, assembling equipment for KZread studio costing less than $1000 is quite problematic.

  • @FellowFilmmaker

I showed the laptop option, which is under $1000. I then said if you want to spend more you can go with the Canon M50mkii, which does have clean HDMI and with a kit lens (cost depends on if you get used or not, it'll be $600-700). You don't have to use the same lens as me, it's just what I'm using. Lighting isn't expensive, as I showed in the video you can do alot for just $300 or less.

You are absolutely correct, Heather. It has to be the Mk II with the M50; you can in fact use the original one („Mk I“) as long as you don‘t need autofocus. As for lenses: I use a Viltrox 23mm f/1.4 which you can buy for less than than $300 - depending on the distance you have your camera at, you might also use the 33mm or 56mm, all with the same maximum aperture and all for about the same price. This is, of course, only an option if you don‘t need the zoom for some reason (I never do in a studio situation). The R50, btw, should be available for less than $600 new if you can wait for a good bargain (without a lens, that is).

@@FellowFilmmaker I just wanted to say that the average budget of a KZread studio is always more than $1000. It can be roughly described as follows: microphone $100, studio light $200, camera lens $200, camera body $600. One of the options to do it below is to invest only in sound and light, and use your phone as a camera. Mac OS allows you to use the main iPhone camera as a WEB camera. To do this, just connect your phone to your laptop with a cable. You will get a much better image than from a laptop WEB camera.
