My husband loves my decor style, vintage cottage, but he also loves his 15 year old leather Lazyboy. We spent a lot to get a super comfortable one. I’m not decorating just for myself and my friends to look at, this is my husband’s home too. So I have learned to be happy with what causes him to enjoy relaxing in our home. I really like our living room and I get great comments from men and women. They say it’s cozy and very nice. Btw, Sarah I love the chairs that you have shown us, they’re really beautiful.

Looks really beautiful! My husband is content with whatever, if it means I'm not spending money, but at the same time, he loves the old lawyer's library look. He would just die if I put this together for Christmas- wouldn't that be incredible to see those for the first time on either side of a victorian Christmas tree? Just beautiful!

Those came out quite lovely. I might consider doing that on a thrift store leather reading chair. My dad has a large recliner from Lazy Boy thanks to my brothers who bought it for him something my Mother could not argue. But I know she did not like it since it was bulky in their small living room. And he still has it and they are still married! 🙏🏽

Ha! Yes I've used shoe polish to cover up cat scratches on leather but also on furniture too. The edges on my dining room table get scratched when they jump up and day before a party I wax the table with regular furniture wax and then touch up the scratches with black. I use a soft shoe polish brush to shine the wax up after it dries. Your chairs look wonderful! Thank you for being our guinea pig!

Your video came at the perfect time for me. This is what I’ve been researching for 2+ months. I need a recliner for me. My husband loves his lazy boy big fat overstuffed recliner. Found several smaller ones I love on wayfair but the leather looks too bright. Now I know how to change that thanks to you Sara. Shoe polish-who knew?!

I may be the only woman alive who wants a recliner. In all fairness it helps me so much with my lupus and other health issues. I love these chairs, they look like there’s a actual place to rest your head. I’m 5’10” and feel like Gigantor in most of the “pretty” recliners. The other issue with the “pretty” recliners is ease of use. Many times they are stiff, way too firm, and too small. My current recliner has a handle on the side that allows me to bring up the feet without much strain on my body, I don’t see this feature on these chairs. How does your husband like them? BTW I love the tips for transforming them to a more worn in look. Thanks for sharing!

Omg! That’s what my husband just asked for! I again talked him to getting the Leeds top grain chair with the casters, I just ordered it and waiting for the leather chair to come in! But I do have a fireplace in my dinning room so maybe he will get his dream chair!?!?! But I just can’t understand, but must be a man thing!!! Lol I saw those chairs while looking! I love the Leeds chair because it looks likes it’s been around for years! I too have an old home, but also tired of cream sofa and changed it out for a velvet sofa, I love my velvet because it’s so easy to clean lil spills, and you never see where you just cleaned, I take a fabric brush and run it over the velvet after, and vacuum it once every two weeks! But now waiting for my beautiful leather chair

Thanks for yet again one more great video! What an amazing transformation! They’re gorgeous! We found a lovely brown leather recliner for my hubby 10 yrs ago. It has great style, not at all puffy but still very comfy. It has a high back for his tall frame, no ugly handle on the side, and brass studs! I wish there was a way to post a photo here. I doubt its available now but if I can find the specs I’ll post them. One negative, I’ve repaired many a small hole in my sheetrock from placing it too close to the wall in my tiny living room. I finally found a location where thus far this isn’t an issue. But adding the wheels to the legs! Great idea and I may try it!

Absolutely love them. Our recliners are way too big, but I don't want fabric because they are used so much. The sleek shape of these is just perfect and your technique with the shoe polish is so doable. Would not be able to have the casters because of the difficulty but may check into other leg choices with perhaps a work around. Do you think I can pull off a good look with a cream colored slouchy couch? I love the English/French Country look. Thanks for sharing your ideas and talents with all of us.

As senior citizens, my husband and I love our recliners, and hated leaving our last one when we moved! It didn’t take us long to realize, we needed to get a new one! Can I tell you, the search was a long one and they are so expensive. We ended up buying a set of gently used Flexsteel couch and loveseat. Now the search for a single recliner! Our guests always want their recliners too! What a great video and customization of your family’s seating compromise! They are gorgeous! Great project Sarah, and thank you again for a fun episode.

Recliners... I found 2 really nice chairs that recline from Lazy-Boy Furniture (Canada)...they have legs/feet and do not look like recliners... they are beige fabric... they are the push arm ones...so no 'crank' on the side, which is a giveaway! Then we bought also, a beige leather sofa, which either end reclines...they are an electric push button, very small...barely see...and has a USB port on either end as well!

Methinks you made lemons into lemonade. My best friend has husband whose only request in interior design was a recliner. She did find a beautiful leather one that didn’t look “reclinery” at all. It was expensive, but works in her space. She’s an interior designer, so has a very good eye. Think this was a good option if cost is a consideration. Not a recliner fan, but appreciate the tutorial.

Well, look at you and your lovely recliners. Great ideas. Like others I worry about the shoe polish transferring to apparel during hot weather. I have a 30 year old leather chair and ottoman and I keep it looking great by conditioning the leather once a year. Chair looks better now than when I bought it because of natural patina. But here's a small tip. My leather chair has very thick leather, but 3 yrs ago my brother bought a leather lazyboy and within a year the top of the chair back started to lose color from his watching TV and moving his head. He paid two grand for that recliner and the leather is thin and they used cheap dye. So my sister in law cleaned it. Applied leather dye & fixed it somewhat. But now my brother keeps a throw across the back while he watches TV at night and whips it off when they have company over. So, maybe have your Hubs throw a lap throw over the top to keep your refinishing in good repair... not that I'm saying it's cheap dye on your chairs, just so you don't rub off your hard work. 🙂

The chairs look great. I would love that look and comfort. Love how the polish worked! I would have loved seeing your husband in the finished chair. My guys don't want recliners, just high backs. Tall men with large shoulders. Wing chairs work for them, so that is my work around. I wanted a more French look, but went with English country instead with a high back tapestry sofa and rhe wing chairs.

They turned out lovely. I agree with you about recliners and was planning to ditch ours this summer. However, I fell and broke my arm while on vacation. Everyone, the ER doctors, the Orthopedic doctor, the Physical Therapist ALL told me to sleep in a recliner. It was such a blessing to already own one. Now that we're preparing to replace our furniture, my dh and I are in agreement that we need a recliner somewhere on the 1st floor of the house...just in case.

We have quite an opposite situation in our family. My husband doesn’t like recliners. I do:)) And yes, they are ugly. And yes, they are so freaking comfortable! It sounds very encouraging when you’re saying that “We can change the color”. Im still struggling to try this because my beloved old recliner is very dark greenish color, nearly black. I did some research and it turned out that it’s very tricky to change the color of black (ish) leather. I’d really appreciate any advice because I’ve got several very good quality leather couches, black ones of course. And they just drive me mad. Anyway, I love your project! Didn’t think about a shoe polish that way whatsoever! Thank you for sharing!

I love your recliners! My hubby always has to have big chunky recliners. A few years ago he told me to find a nice living room sofa and loveseat set. I'm not big on sets and like to mix match. Then he said he wanted the sofa to have recliners built in. I found a set I thought I could live with and now I absolutely hate them. I picked leather because the guys can get dirty without looking dirty and I thought they would be easy to clean. Now they are breaking down and I can't wait for them to fall apart. I'm tempted to help them along just to get it out of my house. 😂🤣😂 If I put the TV and sofa in the shop then I wouldn't have to worry about the dirt or ugly furniture. 😂

Ive had the recliner battle! The beautiful ones cause at least a leg! However my husband had a severe foot injury a year ago and he needed something to relax in and I didn’t want him to buy/pick it. I finally found one at SAMS CLUB that I liked for $400. Our kids and I paid for it as a Christmas present It’s black, fits into my esthetic (Farmhouse, French Countryish)and has cup holders that light up. It’s Good! You are die hard about a look with the polish and nail heads and all. They do look amazing!

My husband had the choice of either getting the biggest tv he could find for all of the house or getting recliners lol He chose the TV’s but I’ve still been on the hunt for one recliner. Can’t wait to try this

What about transfer color on clothes? Would a warm summer day cause the polish to be easily transferred off on clothes?

We haven't had any color transfer! We really worked the polish into the leather (using the three different steps) to avoid it, and so far it's working!

If you've ever polished up a pair of shoes you normally SMOTHER the shoe in shoe polish (... ok... at least that's what I did as a child to polish my Brown leather school shoes (I'm in Australia and school uniforms are the norm here and mum would get us to polish our own scuffed up leather school shoes (that she usually hoped would last the year) before term at least - kids are HARD on shoes!) Anyway, you SMOTHER on the show polish with a show polish brush, rub rub and rub and brush it in to that leather and then you grab a cloth and wipe off all the excess and rub rub rub rub until it is all either soaked in to the leather or off on the cloth. There is really no residue left behind. So I probably wouldn't be game enough to sit on those chairs in white jeans on the DAY you polish them, but, a week later they really should even be white jean friendly. The trick really would be that once you think you are done to go over the chair with something like an old white cloth diaper or towel and REALLY rub and polish after you think you are done and you will find any polish that has not been rubbed in enough.
